The Ricoh and Chinon should lock the mirror up when the self timer is
engaged but otherwise don't offer this feature. The Ricoh XR-1 does have
DoF preview and all manual speeds and sounds like the closest thing to
what you want other than a KX.

Re: Way OT: More about cars, Dodge Chargers

2002-05-12 Thread William Wiseman

Best car I ever owned was a '73 Dodge Charger. White top and interior,
cream on the body with black pinstripes. It had a big block 400 that the
original owner had modified (dual carbs, new headers, new valves, etc).
Luckily, it also had 4 wheel disc brakes. It would go faster than the
speedometer indicated (140) and was rock solid on the highway. The only
bad thing was the 12mpg at normal speeds and the 7mpg at the speed I
normally drove it.

Re: Film scanners?

2002-05-02 Thread William Wiseman

I don't know. My results with it were lousy and it wouldn't run
correctly most of the time (MAC). I prefer to adjust in Photoshop.
SilverFast Ai is better than Vuescan but it doesn't support Minolta
scanners. I like it for my Epson 1640.

RE: OT newbie tripod question

2001-04-16 Thread William Wiseman

I have a Slik 700DX that I have been using for about a year. Great tripod! I
paid about $150 at a local shop (on sale). It was more stable than the other
under $250 tripods I tested in the store. I have added a short center post
and the Slik Pro Ballhead (uses the same round QR) to make for a really nice
setup for under $250.

JeffW.

>>Hi
Recently I got Slik 700 DX.
I paid 139USD for tripod and 16USD for Bag at www.adorama.com

Before deciding to buy at www.adorama.com I did bit of price searching and
here are the results.
I found least quote at www.cambridgeworld.com and www.cameraannex.com
but they said its out of stock. These quotes for better than
www.adorama.com.

This tripod feels good and stable. I can not comment much since its my first
"GOOD" tripod;
Earlier I was using 20-30 USD tripods.

Bye

Re: suggested student cameras?

2001-04-11 Thread William Wiseman

You migt also consider the Ricoh KR-5 Super (K1000 equiv) or XR-1 (KX
equiv). Both can often be found at very good prices on ebay.

And they both take any K-mount lens.

I have several Ricoh XR diopters that I would sell (Cheap). They fit Ricoh
KR & XR bodies and I have also used them on Pentax K1000 & KM bodies .

I have +3, +1, -1 and -3.

The 700DX is very nice. I have one with the Slik ballhead that uses the same
round quick relese plates and love it. A bit heavy for hiking unless you use
a backpack.

Re: Another one about (Pentax) AF?

2001-03-18 Thread William Wiseman

"Reason I'm asking is that these SFX and SFXn cameras can now be bought (in
"excellent" condition,) for a song (almost) from KEH...
IY(esteemed)O's, would it be worth it for me to get one (for around $95 to
$133,) just to play around with the AF while I'm waiting for the next best
(camera) thing to come into my life?
So. Another round."

Actually,

I wish I had kept my SF1n for using the continuos mode. I just hated the
controls for manual adjustments. I had good luck shooting SCA combat at
about 30 feet. It feels similar to the PZ series and is much heavier than
the ZX's. The last one I sold (in SB EX condition) went for $200 witha Sigma
28-80 zoom so the price seems about right.

Re: ZX-5N 's lousy AF???

2001-03-17 Thread William Wiseman

(Y'know, I like my ZX-M for what it does now. But I've been considering
getting an AF camera, and hearing all this stuff (from Pentax fans, no
less!) about how poor the Pentax AF systems are, I'm beginning to wonder if
I haven't made a mistake buying into this Pentax stuff instead of maybe
going with another, better operating, system???  (Where maybe I won't have
to spend close to $1000 (for an MZS) just to get a camera with a good AF
system... Hell, if I wanted need to spend that kind of money, why not go for
an F-100 and be done with it!?)

Pentax (like all brands) designs the camera to do what they think the
customer wants. The ZX-5n is not really designed for multiple shot/rapid
movement subjects. If can work OK but for that I found my PZ-1 to be much
better.

And since I don't think any AF system is really all that good I don't let it
bother me. If I really want something to be in focus I use a MF lens on a MF
body since ALL AF systems are only marginally accurate.
