Thanks everybody for your warm welcome, it's nice to be back.

I notice nobody offered me a chair and a pint as yet... ;-))).

I'll thank personally every one of you but now I must work. Sad but true...

It is a Smart car, sold under the brand Smart and marketed by Mercedes Benz
(it think) here in Europe. There was some involvement with Swatch, the swiss
brand selling funny plastic watches, but I don't know the extent of it.

In overcrowded towns here like Rome they're sold like hot cakes altough
the price is rather steep. They have a yuppish market image and young professionals
or executives tend to see it as status symbols.

I never drove one and it gives me a sense of immediate danger seeing them
speed by at 130 Km/h (70-75 Mph?). They say they tend to loose control quite
easyily under less then ideal conditions on Rome's center paved roads.

In fact it is one of those. A rather silly name though as no car can be
smarter then the guy/gal driving it.

Same thing applies for cameras, IMO.

Sorry for forgetting the OT but the shot was done with my Z1-p and 24/2.8

AFAIK Vivitar gave up on quality lenses some time ago. I don't think current Series 1
lenses can be much different from standard ones, just looking at the prices...

Joe,

adaptall mount allow Tamron manual focus lenses to be used with any mount available
simply by changing the mount which is a separate part from the lens. The combo makes a
whole, functional, automatic diaphragm lens.

Rif: Photos of cakes and ice-cream

2002-03-07 Thread f . minelli

Maciej,
my compliments for your first pro occasion.

The images seem fine, although not too sharp.
Personally I don't like the photos where the background has been taken off the image
but I guess it wasn't your decision.
The 4th one on the left row was a difficult subject to shoot and the top of the cake
appears burned out, maybe half a stop less exposure would have been better.

Nice work, anyway.

Place a large copyright notice across the image making it visible but not totally
opaque. Do not place it in a corner or on an evenly colored part of the image or it
will be just too easy to remove.

Yes. :-(((. Once the image is downloaded you can't tell what it will be used for,

Re: Food photography advice needed

2002-02-26 Thread f . minelli

Maciej,

I'm no expert at it but I'd say you should avoid (hot) studio lights with the ice
creams and work very fast...

Aside for that I think you'll need an adequate set (backdrop, workbench, etc.). Being
yours not particularly reflective subjects you shouldn't have problems with the flash
but perhaps you can the light from it bounce somewhere in order to get a softer
lighting.

I hope you get to eat the surviving subject when you're done with them...

Usually the most easy to fine adjust is the best, of course weight counts if you're in
the field.
I think geared heads, then pan/tilt, last ballheads is the ranking, talking about real
macro (1:1 or more).

Of course, it screws in just like your camera.

I'm still not very convinced about the "too powerful" issue.
If the TTL circuit reacts fast enough to quench the emission at the right time you're
fine. Right now, when I want to shoot something really close I simply use a large
omnibounce card to reflect the flash light where I want it. You can see the effect in
my "Orange" shot in a past PUG. It's an AF500FTZ so it's even more powerful than the
280T...

Thanks David.
I did a little experimentation with aluminium foil and it seems to me that only the
extra AF contact (wrt the classic KA ones) needs to be shorted to the lens, am I
wrong?

Maybe the "total scaping" alternative is actually tidier and more effective, though.

Yes,absolutely.

I bought two bargain graded lenses from them and found them nearly perfect, optically.

Fred,
Christian's post should have clarified things a bit.
The flash has to be nearly on top of the lens front in order to illuminate evenly
marco subjects.

I have to work seriously on the bracket issue and possibly revert to a smaller flash.
The 280 apperars to be still a little big but it should already have a plug for the
F5P ext. cable which would make me save about 30 USD of worthless plastic. I liked the
220T but it has no autoflash capabilities so I could use it only with the Z-1p.

Thanks a lot, anyway, Flavio

Thanks Joe, do find a big differnece between the two lenses? I was also uncertain when
I bought it between those two but I've been fine with the Tokina. When looking for
