Enablement - I finally have a superwide!

2006-12-20 Thread jkmess
I just picked up a Sigma 10-20 4-5,6 EX DC. the build quality is lovely, can't
wait
to try it out on the camera.

I also have an AF540 FGZ flash and Sigma 600mm mirror lens coming from Ebay.
That's it for me for quite some time in terms of buying gear. :)

GESO - my first try at action/motorsport

2006-12-14 Thread jkmess
A group or mates hired Wakefield Park racetrack just outside Goulburn NSW on
Wednesday for a motorcycle track day. Last time I did a track day at that
track, I
had a 160kph (100mph) crash, so I didn't take part this time. Instead, I took
the
K10D and cheap Sigma 70-210 zoom and 'orrible Vivitar 400mm manual focus lenses
to the track.

Having never tried shooting such subject matter it was a steep learning curve
and
not having fast lenses meant shooting above 400 iso much of the time. Still, I
got a
few shots I'm reasonably happy with and I was VERY impressed with how well the
K10D performed.

The shots in the gallery are a bit distorted in the gallery page, you have to
click on
the image to get it to open in it's own window to get a proper, sharp version
which
is annoying.

Comments, suggestions and criticism welcome.

Cheers

The irony of it is that the majority of people buying PS cameras and
clamouring for
higher MP counts are only ever going to email small jpegs and/or get regular
photo
sized prints made, so they would be equally happy with a 3mp camera.

Ahhh, the power of marketing.

Not could, would. Standing in a digital camera shop (no I am not

to hear in the short time I was in there that MP count does indeed
appear to be a major selling point.

K10D image quality

2006-11-30 Thread jkmess
There may be wailing and gnashing of teeth over on DPReview about perceived
problems
with the K10D, but my initial impressions with my new K10D are that this camera
delivers
astonishing image quality! Images are much sharper right out of the camera
(even with
the same lens) than my istDL. The colour balance and rendition are vastly
superior to
the istDL and the tonal gradations and shadow detail (in fact dynamic range in
general)
are also vastly superior to the DL.

Every shot from the DL had to be quite drastically tweaked in levels to get rid
of the red
cast in every shot. Levels, curves, selective colour and slight selective
saturation
adjustments are part of my regular workflow for images from the DL.

Last night, I found that a very quick and subtle tweak of levels and curves
were all I
needed to get more than satisfactory results from my K10D files.

They really do POP! I also did an experiment with the same lens, same settings
on the
tripod, etc between the two cameras. I shot RAW and converted to JPEG with no
adjustments whatsoever. Unfortunately, I resized them a little too small, so
I'll redo it
with larger files, but the difference between the two was staggering.

In isolation the istDL shot looks okay. When compared to the K10D shot, the
istDL shot
is unacceptably soft, muddy, underexposed and red. The difference really did
blow me
away.

Long story short...even though I had built the K10D up a huge amount, it has
certainly
met my expectations.

The only issue I've had is the shake reduction appears to be a little
intermittant.
Sometimes it works (you can hear it during exposure) and sometimes it doesn't.

difference is
very noticeable. Both were iso200 with auto whitebalance in aperture priority

Another interesting thing is that these files have been resized to exactly the
same
number of pixels, however the K10D file is about 25% larger. Clearly the K10D
captures and retains more data.

RE: PESO- merge to HDR (OT-Surreal phot)

2006-11-15 Thread jkmess
High Dynamic Range. You capture multiple shots, identical apart from shutter
speed. The shutter speed is varied to give a range of exposures from 1-2 stops
under to 1-2 stops over in 1 stop increments (although I prefer 1/2 stop
increments). These are then blended in photoshop and the result is a 32 bit
file
which can't be displayed or printed as the dynamic range is too great for the
average monitor or print media.

Converting the file back into a 16 bit file allows you to tweak it to show
hightlight
and shado detail, but the adjustments are quite difficult to do if you want to
keep it
looking relatively natural.

  incredible

makes it so interesting -- to me. There are paintings on some
 Vatican

 to

find one or two and post them to illustrate what I mean. I think

PESO- merge to HDR

2006-11-13 Thread jkmess
I've decided to really try to come to grips with the 32bit hdr function in
photoshop
CS2. the tricky part is working the curve when converting back down to 16
bits.
It's very easy to get awful results and quite hard to get good results.

This was shot Sunday evening at Darling Harbour in Sydney. From memory there
were about 7 exposures blended. In hindsight, I should have taken a couple
more
further towards the underexposed side, but I'm still happy with the result.

Unfortunately, this is the largest size I can upload.

http://tinyurl.com/y46kuj

Comments welcome and if there's anyone out there with expertise with this
function, advice is definitely welcome. :)

Thankfullly I just don't tend to use even 400 on my dl..the noise and image

 frustrating to say the least.

Please excuse my ignorance, but how exactly do you stack them in Photoshop?
I'm
familiar wit combining images of different exposures, but how exactly would

work?

Quoting Tom C [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

It's when you combine virtually identical multiple exposures,
 stacking
them to reach a final image that has a total exposure time equal to
 the sum
 of the individual exposures.

It's useful in astrophotography for a number of reaons. The main one
 is
that a bunch of short, say 6 individual 30 second exposures, can be
 combined
The result is the accumulated photons of a 3 minute exposure. The
 neat
thing is that tracking error (irregularities in the motor drive or
 polar
alignment) can be virtually eliminated, because software
 automatically
aligns/registers the individual images so they overlay each other
 perfectly.

The additional benefit we're talking about here is that the sensor
 can be
run at both a lower ISO and for a shorter exposure duration, both of
 which
 reduce noise.

It also is likely possible to reduce
overall noise by shooting at shorter
   exposure times and stacking images.
The stack will stack up noise just like
it does with the signal, but if each
stacked image is less than half as
   noisy as it's double-ISO cousin,
   results could be favorable.

Re: K10D aimed as D200 killer

2006-10-30 Thread jkmess
I also don't understand the gripes people have about the IQ of the K10D when
nobody
has really seen images that can really be used for comparisons.

A friend (who has a Canon 30D) asked me in an email today so how come it's so
special? in response to my excitement about the K10D.

Here's my response, the first time I've really documented (and thought out) the
reasons
why I want the new camera so much in comparison to my *ist DL.

Things that this camera has that my current couldn't dream of:

10mp vs 6mp - not hugely important, but worthwhile for cropping, macros, and
large
prints, etc

Shake reduction in the body - very, very handy...up to four stops extra for
hand held
photography in low light.

Dust reduction (coating on sensor and sensor shake) - vital for anyone who
changes
lenses occasionally (or constantly like me)! I'm sick of cloning out dust
spots on my
images.

Much faster auto focus - the slow AF on my current camera gives me the sh*ts in
a big
way.

Iso 100 - my current camera only goes to iso 200, great for when you want a
long
exposure for movement in bright conditions.

Ability to shoot RAW and JPEG simultaneously - could come in handy.

Weather sealed body - fantastic!

Larger buffer, faster write speed = more shots in continuous mode before it
slows
down - my current camera is crap in this regard

Remote control sensors on front AND rear of camera - very handy

Penta prism view finder - my current camera has a penta mirror and is darker
and smaller

Ability to bracket exposure and white balance...up to five shots - very handy
for the
high dynamic range landscapes I often shoot

Illuminated lcd - my camera isn't illuminated.

Switch on body to change between continuous and single auto focus mode -
current
camera I have to do this through the menu...annoying!

Switch on body to change metering modes - again, I have to use the menu for
this and
it's a huge source of frustration when trying to shoot quickly ( I change
metering modes
quite often).

11 AF sensors and quick easy control on the body to select the in focus point
or
between auto and central - current camera...centre or wide only and must be
selected
through the menu

They're just the major advances off the top of my head! Basically, the specs
and
design of this camera address every single gripe I've had with my current
camera and
adds quite a few very handy features I hadn't thought of. If I were given cart
blanche
to design the perfect DSLR for me with current technology, this would be
pretty much
it. All that and it's only slightly more expensive than my current camera was
a year
ago! This camera is pretty much a direct competitor of the Nikon D200 and your
Canon
for a fraction of the cost, and with cheaper, good quality lenses available.

Is that enough? :)

sky colour. I then blended them in PS CS2. I tried to keep it looking natural
so I
haven't gone overboard...I just tried to do enough to render the scene as I saw
it.
I've deliberately kept it a little on the dark side for that reason. Any
lighter and I
started to lose the colour saturation of the sky. If I compensated for that,
then it
started to look over ps'd and unnatural. To me, this result is as close as I
can get
to how the scene looked to the naked eye as the sun rose behind the cliff face.

getting year of production from Pentax serial numbers

2006-10-24 Thread jkmess
I'd like to know what year my 67 was made. Does anyone know who I should
contact to ascertain this? I assume Pentax could tell me from the serial
number,
but I tried that with my LX. I sent an email to Pentax USA (there's no Pentax

67...now my lens has arrived

2006-10-23 Thread jkmess
My 67 75mm f4.5 lens has just arrived and it looks to be in great shape. I've
mounted it on the camera and had my first play with focussing, etc. The meter
works fine, but the viewfinder is very dark...far too dark and indistinct to
make
focussing possible. Sitting in my office under quite bright flouro lights, it
is
impossible with this prism and focussing screen combination to tell whether the
image is in focus or not. The image is blurred at all times.

Aha!! I just thought of something. A previous owner had fitted a diopter
adjustment lens in the finder. I've removed it and I can now focus!

Disaster averted, back to regular programming :)

Now I just need to get through this first roll. :D

An ad that Pentax was running at the time showed a fellow dressed in

I was expecting a big camera based on the ad.
After the camera arrived, I realized that Pentax had hired the

I asked my wife to open the package to confirm the camera had a battery and the

So, I'm expecting a pretty big lump of metal.

Remedial film photography. :)

2006-10-18 Thread jkmess
Can someone please explain to me the reason that people load 50 iso film and
shoot
it with the camera set at 12 iso (numbers just for example).

What are the benefits of doing this? It doesn't change the speed of the
film...just
the speed the camera's meter thinks the film is. I assume it is so you can
selectively over or under expose a bit, but can't you just do that with your
exposure setting?

As you can tell, I don't understand why people over or under rate the iso of
their
film deliberately.

 faster.
The images obtained with it were just fine. I chose it over the

Other than flare, I never had any quibbes with the pictures the

hand held meters

You really need to have an incident meter. This measures the light
that's falling on the subject, and in general gives you the most
accurate reading. However, many people who do their own processing
 and
printing and use the zone system like to use a spotmeter. I would
recommend a combined meter, which will also include wide-area
 reflected metering.

Metering is generally pretty simple and lacking in mystery - most
basic photography books explain it adequately.

An item you are looking for is available at a very good price (buy it now).
The seller
is a relatively new ebay member and has zero feedback. The seller in in China.
 The
seller can't accept Paypal.

Now, if I knew for certain that this was for real and above board, I'd buy the
item
immediately. There seem to be too many unknowns though and I can't be certain
the item will arrive as promised.

What would you do?

If it is for real, I couldn't bear to miss out...if it isn't, I can't afford to
blow my
money.

Scam. Damn near guaranteed. No Paypal, China and zero feedback.

That's what I'm thinking. It is firmly in the too good to be true category...a
Pentax
67 II with 4 lenses and metered prism for AUD$520 buy it now. That's about
$2000
too cheap!

Re: hand held meters

2006-10-10 Thread jkmess
I hadn't thought of that, I could always use my K10D (once it arrives). :)

Heck I've been using my *ist-Ds as a light meter to shoot with my
 new
Kodak Medalist. Those 6x9 exposures are just too expensive to
 waste.

 metering) I have

Any advice appreciated as hand held metering is a mystery to me!

You might take a look at a point and shoot digital. Some of them
 have
an exposure metering function. If you zoom the lens, you can
 narrow
down the area you're metering. Although not as precise as a 1
 degree
spot meter, and perhaps not as accurate, it certainly would be a
 cost
effective path to take. I've used the 750z in this capacity with
 my
C220 quite a few times. Plus, if you run out of film you can keep
 shooting with the digicam!

35mm equivalent focal length on P6x7

2006-10-09 Thread jkmess
Hi all

I may be on the verge of purchasing a 6x7 body and I'm wondering what the
conversion is for focal lengths since I'm used to thinking in 35mm focal
lengths.

I won't really have much of a budget for lenses, etc so I'll have to start with
only
one. Considering what I plan to mostly use the body for, I want a wide angle.
Can
someone please suggest a good wide angle for the 6x7 for landscapes?
Preferably
one that's fairly readily available used and not too expensive. :)

K10D - I've placed my order

2006-10-09 Thread jkmess
Well I bit the bullet yesterday and put a deposit down on a K10D without a firm
availability date or even retail price for Aus. I want to make sure I have one
before
Christmas and at least this way I can ensure I get one from the first shipment.
