Besides a large soft light source you'd need to flag a lot of glass,
chrome and polished areas to improve their contrast in the shot.

When I did a table-top shoot of my light meter for a blog article, I
used my hand as a flag to block direct light from the 24" softbox onto
the LCD display. That made an enormous difference to the meter's final
appearance. All covered in the Light, Science & Magic book.

CR is not for the enthusiast.

Of anything.

Back when I read the odd high end stereo mag like Stereophile or Absolute Sound
(Are either of those still around? I don't know...) they decried CR stereo
ratings: "This Naim amplifier seems sturdily built and rugged, and it measures
quite good although at only 15 watts per side it's not very powerful. At 1/10th
the price we recommend this Sansui receiver with 200 watts per channel and even
better measurements than the Naim. Plus, the Sansui has a built-in tuner and
pre-amp! A much better value! We did double-blind AB testing and 8 out of 10
listeners couldn't tell the difference..."

that's interesting and notable, and will get Pentax some sales

i'm with the rest in being very wary of CR's ratings, though; they package
their results so as to do the thinking for you, and make it hard to parse out
useful info from all their assumptions about the products and the people who'll
use them; the best product for their hypothetical average person is rarely the
right product for me

and that is before the outright mistakes CR often seems to make, as well as the
fact that they never dare to question consumerism itself; i often consider CR's
data for major purchases, but i also often agree with their conclusions

I have a pair of amber sunglasses that slip over my glasses. During
the fall colour season, the amber/yellow really makes the colours pop,
so on my weekend trip i stopped in Sunderland Ontario and shot this
church. I took several shots with and with out a circular polarize r
and this one through the glasses.

Not quite what i see in my eyeballs but kinda neat. I used the WB tool
and some luminous adjustment on oranges and purples.

That's what I found. very little fall color. Only a few trees had

This is the same trip where I got the shot of the Heron that was

The November 2012 issue of Consumer Reports magazine features the
"Best Products of the Year." Among the listed items are 12 DSLRs,
including two Pentax cameras! The K-5 is 9th, and the Kr is 11th,
although both have the same total score (67) and are separated by an
evil N***n product, the D5100. The twelve include 4 each from C***N
and N***N, 2 from Pentax, and one each from Oly and Sony.

It was a very serious matter in Hawaii as well.

All Polynesian languages are closely related to each other. When Cook
first landed in Hawaii, he was able to communicate quite well with the
Hawaiians through the Polynesians he already had on his crew.

Beautiful run of weather lately, and being a long weekend made it even
nicer. Continuing on my project of revisiting little-used lenses, I took
the Avenon 21mm/2.8 out for a walk. Used to be one of my favourites, but
since acquiring the formidable Zeiss 21mm/2.8, I've hardly touched the
Avenon. It might be the weak coating, or it might be lashings of
spherical aberration, this lens has a lot of "glow", especially when
shooting contre-jour. But it really gives it character. Matched with the
equally-fun Epson R-D1s, the combo is a good reminder to me that I don't
need to be on the technological bleeding edge.

As it happens, I also hit the generous (not) limit of space allocated by
my ISP for the website, so I razed it to the ground and started anew.
Still work in progress, so please excuse the plaster dust. Not quite
sure why the little prev/next arrows don't come up when hovering over
the pics, so click on the left or right of the large images to navigate.

Re: PESO - Hot Dogs for Jesus

2012-09-30 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
My point was not that Jesus would have eaten hot dogs. Being triple O
(Omniscient, Omnipotent and Omnibenevolent) he would have known that hot dogs
aren't good for a human body (and he was god and human all in one - like
Certs). Even veggie dogs with soy in them (North American soy is one of the
more genetically modified crops) are a poor choice.

He also would have been compassionate and not eaten meat.

And being omniscient he had the power to see into the future and would have
wanted to set an example of good healthy eating for future generations of
Christians.

No, the title was saying that they were doing good works for god with wieners
on a bun...

It was intended as humour.

;-)

Btw, thank for the comment, and thanks to all others who looked and commented.

Some on-topic pics for a change. I decided to dust off a few of my
little-used lenses to reacquaint myself with them. Someone was asking
about the Sigma 30mm/1.4. A pleasant lens to use, but in no way stellar,
and not a substitute for the FA31. Little too quirky when shooting wide
open. Happy to hold onto it, though.

Little street festival yesterday for the fashionistas, wherein I met a

That seems to be generally true of audio things these days - I think they
expect people to be permanently wearing headphones, or in the case of TVs to
be plugged into some sort of home cinema set up with
superoctomegatronic-3D-HDQ- surround-sound Dolby bollocks. Or maybe it's
just that I'm a deaf git.

I have very little experience with mobile phones generally and even less with
smartphones. In fact my Samsung Galaxy S II with Android is my first and only.
So I can't compare it with others.

What I can say, however, is that as a phone it is horrible. I can barely hear
the person at the other end if there is even the tiniest bit of background
noise. The sound quality generally is horrible.

Commentary: These perfectly squared off benches fascinate me in the way
they stand off from the surrounding environment, almost as if they,.
like the monolith in 2001, were some perfect alien artifact, created by
an advanced civilization, to educate the monkeys.

The focus on this wasn't exactly correct. I was trying to hit the
middle of the bench but somehow hit the far edge. So in the full size
image the closest side is a bit soft. It doesn't show through so much
when sized for the web but it's still a bit noticeable.

For what amounts to about the cheapest long lens solution available,
this little mirror is surprisingly sharp when you do everything right,
though it does need a bit of a contrast boost. I only had to clone out
one circular highlight to keep it's true nature from being obvious.

I have no idea what they were talking about but I liked the way the older of

2012-09-27 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
Very cool! What surface is it walking on? Almost looks like a mattress or
something? Whatever it is I think it really adds to the photo - not so strong
as to distract but visible enough to be a subtle yet interesting element.

Very good photo but two little nits: Might crop a bit off the top and an even
tinier bit off the left to get the frog a bit more off-centre and make the
photo a bit more dynamic.

And I find the photo a bit dark, but since I am looking at it on my android you
may take this criticism as worth a grain of salt.

All in all, though, a wonderful photo!

cheers,
frank

Re: PESO - Life's Greatest Pleasures?

2012-09-26 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
Where did I make him out to be a bad guy? I spoke to him one of the times I was
at GFM and he is a very personable, pleasant fellow.

He's a very good photographer who has come up with or adapted an idea and uses
it along with his other tools to take very unique and beautiful photos.

I have a problem with those who think he cheats or breaks or bends the rules;
he does no such thing.

My personal preference is to take nature photos completely in their natural
surroundings, as found. He brings a mini-studio and enhances his subjects
before shooting them.

Nothing wrong or unethical about that.

I am still puzzled what I said that makes you think I think he's a "bad guy"?

cheers,
frank

Frank,
I believe that I talked to Charles at GFM this year.
He's not really the bad guy you make him out to be.
He did post an 'over the top' drops photo that won a prize,
but freely shared all his tricks the next year.

Here is my first cut at my 46 best photos from the Lindy Exchange about a week
ago. I've posted a few of these already:

http://www.fluidr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157631631427532/

I have a few examples that show why the K-5 is such an amazing camera:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/8027991101/in/set-72157631631427532
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/8027917037/in/set-72157631631427532

At first blush, these two shots seem a bit rough. Consider that they were shot
at 1/100 f/3.2 ISO 800

And for example, this shot of the dancers, was shot at 1/30 f/1.8 ISO12,800:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/8027915854

The practical dynamic range of this camera continues to gobsmack me. There
wasn't enough light to easily photograph the dancers, and I'm pulling
reasonable images of the dancers, while exposing for musicians under stage
lights.

This flick is coming from the same team that created "The Post-Lifers"

festivals this year. If you can, I urge you to see it. It's hilarious
and really, really well done. Here's their IMDB & Facebook pages:

Re: PESO - Life's Greatest Pleasures?

2012-09-26 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
Well, I did actually ask the young lady if I could take a photo of her book,
coffee and muffin. That's more than I usually do...

My reference with the backdrop and glycerin was (as some no doubt recognized) a
reference to a certain Mr. Brazwell (sp?), a perennial winner in the Nature
Photography Contest ay GFM. Brought along a little collapsing frame and velvet
backdrops of various colours, sprayed glycerine on flowers and leaves for the
"just after a rainfall" look and away he went; won every year. Shot with Pentax
for a while iirc. Was on this list for a while (may still lurk for all I know).

Lots of jealous people thought it was against the rules but it clearly wasn't.

And it looked very good. He was very good at it - and I guess he still is.
Probably still goes to GFM (sadly I don't). Probably still wins. Mark? Doug?
Anyone else at GFM? Charles still around?

So your scrim story reminded me of him.

Easy to do in a forest, not so much in an urban setting.

;-)

cheers,
frank

My tongue was very firmly in my cheek when I suggested a lighting mod,
Frank. But you knew that didn't you? :-)

I had a crazy mental image of a woman settling in with her coffee and
muffin when she's suddenly surrounded by technicians. Two guys are
erecting a portable 4x8 foot scrim, one is spraying her food with
glycerine. A makeup artist and hairstylist pounce and transform her.
Finally Frank leans in, shoots a few frames, smiles at the woman and
exits along with the assistants. Woman absently bites her muffin,
grimaces and spits it out. Fade.

Hey if Bruce Gilden can spring up and flash people in NY, why not?

More's the pity!

Having lived with the K-5 for a few months now, I've reached the
conclusion that I'm never going to want anything better - I've never
thought that about any of my previous DSLRs. 16M is as much resolution
as I want and ISO 6400+ is more than enough. Full frame? Bah!

The only reason I'm likely to upgrade is if (when?) the K-5 breaks and
is not economically repairable. Or if I win the lottery, but that's
unlikely as I never buy tickets.

PS. I've still got a few film cameras and most still work. Actually
Steve's given me the germ of an idea - perhaps we should have a
special PUG in 2014 to celebrate the Spotmatic's 50th Anniversary
(assuming you can still buy film in 2014...)

Well I have to say I am very happy with my K10D!

If I had the money I would upgrade to the K5 only for the more compact size and
(most importantly) for the stratospheric ISO. As I do lots of night shooting it
would be a boon to me.

I've been itching to take the old Balda (1955ish Baldix 6x6 folder) for a walk
since it arrived, finally had a chance to do so over the weekend.

I loaded it with Fuji Acros 100 for testing. I made a loading mistake this
first time which cost me one frame out of the twelve. I know what I did wrong
so I'll not do that one again.

Otherwise, the camera performed very nicely other than for opening it. The lens
standard mechanism is sticky and I think there's something bent or slightly out
of alignment in it. It opens and snaps into place properly, eventually, but it
takes a lot of careful fussing to make that happen. I'll bring it by the camera
repair shop and see what Fred can do to massage it. Otherwise, the lens seems
good, the shutter seems pretty accurate and the images have that lovely vintage
look to them ... I felt good about posting a couple:

#2: http://www.flickr.com/photos/gdgphoto/8019828444/lightbox

#6: http://www.flickr.com/photos/gdgphoto/8019827304/lightbox

It's a lot of fun to let go of all the bits and bytes with a camera like this.
And I still love the look of 6x6 photographs.

Thanks for looking! Comments are always appreciated.

Sheesh!

;-)

Okay, on the gustatory issue: Please be aware that those are not my coffee or
muffin. They belong to the hands of the lovely young lady at the next table.

For me, generally speaking, espresso is a stand-alone beverage. No need for
cake, cookies, pastry or sweets.
Like you I will have baked goods or pastry with a regular coffee. Not the
chocolate chip muffin in the photo, however; it's not vegan.

:-)

Thanks for the comment and thanks to everyone else who looked and commented.

cheers,
frank

Ditto what Peter says. I do like the shot though.

Next time you go there, Frank, take a collapsible scrim with you to
control the glare and let you raise the exposure so we can see the
muffin properly. I'll come with you if you need an assistant. Mmm,
chocolate.

On a more technical note: don't you find that pairing a muffin with an
espresso means that you run out of liquid long before you finish the
muffin? It's usually three or four sips or one quick swallow and that
espresso is done.

I'd rather have a cup of coffee with that chocolate muffin. With an
espresso, it should be a biscotti, I think.

Hell, no. Ours starts in the pits and goes downhill from there.

We have 50 different and feuding people who get final say, then it has to be
signed off by someone who hates all of them and all of us. When it's been
signed off we circulate it to the different offices round the globe who get
to tell us which bits they don't want us to show, so we have to translate
their wishes into something that a computer can understand, then get it all
signed off again, which means put back the way it was before the overseas
offices made their contribution, which was only meant to be a token gesture.

After that our principal donor will tell us why it doesn't adhere to their
standards since they changed them last without telling us, and if we don't
adhere to the standards they'll cut off our funding. So now it has to go
through the full internal review process again because it's a major change,
and an emergency change at that because go-live was supposed to be in July,
but the emergency change board are scattered across 4 continents and 17 time
zones and we can't get a quorum.

Somebody important says "Something must be done", so I make an arbitrary
decision to go live, because that's something, therefore it must be done,
and throw it over to the support team to sort out at their leisure.

Re: OT - Shoulder injury update

2012-09-25 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
Thanks, Dave. I have to say that I am really impressed with the care I have
received both this time and previous occasions at this hospital (St. Joseph's
in Toronto). I can't blame a harried ER doctor for missing a difficult call and
I am grateful that they obviously take great care in reviewing and following up
on files. I was told by the doctor yesterday morning that it's a break that
she's never seen before and a difficult "catch" for anyone to see in the x-rays.

To answer a few earlier posters, there is no physio yet. Keeping it as still as
possible is what's needed now. As the bone knits I will be "assigned" physio to
make sure that shoulders don't freeze and some strength is built up.

Like the other day, will not clog the list with individual replies but a big
thanks to all (whether you replied or not) for thoughts and support.

This could have been so much worse. I am grateful I am walking and have an
intact cranium and (most important) that my beautiful Marinoni is still with us.

;-)

cheers,
frank aka the one-armed bandit

Ps: Carrying K10D with me at work. Ann, I already have a subway shot from
yesterday! Hope to get a few good streeties (as Derby calls them).

Good to see they picked it up. All you need to do now is rest and listen to
your physiotherapist.

I wanna see the X-ray too, even if you have to draw one :)

My only injury today was a bruised wallet. Maintaining bikes is not cheap.

I assume that's chocolate, which is undeniably one of life's great
pleasures. However while the glare off the table can be forgiven, the
blacks are too blocked to convey an inviting texture to the pastry and
the coffee cup needs a bit more separation from it's shadow/reflection
in the saucer . Aside from that the composition is quite pleasing.

Hello all,

Here's a head-scratcher:

Tonight, I was shooting senior portraits of my son. We had gone out
to the track at the high school, a place he holds quite dear, for the
occasion. As the evening grew darker, I had my flash (540) set up on
a stand & softbox, firing with the camera's wireless remote system.
All was fine, more or less, for several minutes. Until the camera
stopped shooting. I would press the shutter, and I'd get a flicker of
light (focus assist or pop up flash signalling the 540? not sure..),
but the shutter wouldn't fire. Several times I would re-focus and try
again, but nothing. I tried the following:

- turning the whole thing off & on again
- turning off the focus assist light
- setting the AF to release priority, instead of focus priority
- using manual focus
- turning off flash, shooting manual exposure mode
- shooting in Av, Tv, Tav, P and AUTO

None of these got the shutter to fire.

We packed it in for the day, and when I got home, 20 minutes later, I
tried the camera again. Worked fine, in Av, M, Tav, etc... though I
didn't try it with the wireless flash again... Mind you, this whole
shutter mechanism was recently replaced (6 months ago) at CRIS. So,
I'm thinking I must be doing something wrong, or at least missing
something. What do you make of this? Any thoughts?

Lastly, just for fun -- a peso. My son, Nick, from tonight. Looking
as bad as he is able...

OT - Shoulder injury update

2012-09-24 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
Got a call from the hospital yesterday. Upon reviewing x-rays they now see a
fracture and I should reattend Monday morning. Which I did.

Fracture of the clavical right near the tip. It's like a small chip got shaved
off.

Good news: should heal well. Six weeks in a sling and I should be good to ride
a bike.

So I am doing my job walking and on transit.

More good news: This time I have a driver with insurance. Due to Ontario's no
fault system it may be hard to get pain and suffering out of him but at least
out-of-pockets will be covered.

I actually think that bones may heal faster and more completely than soft
tissue (he says looking for a silver lining).

;-)

frank

Fair

The Folsom Street Fair is a San Francisco "Leather Pride" celebration. On one
hand it is an incredibly rich opportunity to photograph certain elements of
society enjoying life with an exuberance which is hard to believe. On the other
hand, sometimes seeing this exuberance makes you want to scrub your brain with
steel wool and bleach. I've got a set of photos from today that would probably
all be OK in most reasonably liberal workplaces. I did get one photo of
someone's woody, that I think Frank might appreciate:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/8018818394/

I think that this photo captures the exuberance, without showing anything too
outrageously risque:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/8018815163/

It was nearly as much fun checking out the camera gear in use at the fair. Of
course there was the usual assortment of canikon SLRs. I also saw a K-7 and two
full frame Pentax SLRs. One was an ME, I didn't catch what the other was. I
also saw an 8x10 view camera, a 6x7 rangefinder or two, several MF film
cameras, and a Nikon F set up to shoot from ground level. I was amused to note
this ginger, with a DSLR around her neck, photographing some of the local color
with her cell phone:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/8018824050/

While none of these photos are actually "lewd", I advise caution as to who
might be looking over your shoulder if and when you open the links.
My full set from the day is posted at:

My dog discovered this guy shortly after nightfall this evening, On
a whim, I decided to see if I could capture him with my K-r. I just
pointed the camera where I thought he was, pressed the shutter button
down half way, and tried to frame his by the light of the autofocus
preflash. This was the best of my efforts.

Your usual wonderful work. Of particular brilliance (for me) are the lady next
to the little statue and the skaeboarder with the armcast.

Great stuff!

frank

(if my calculations are correct) Happy equinox. Gorgeous day today, so
had to be out there. Rather heavy on the police presence after last
weeks' shenanigans, but all was calm this weekend
