Another question is, were the batteries in the camera installed
correctly? It's possible to put them in wrong, so that the camera
suffers from low voltage.

Interesting reading below. Let's see if we can get this
 solved. Perhaps
the problem had to do with the camera needing more current/less
current than the batteries were giving it? What kind of
 batteries were in
the camera? What kind did you put in the grip?

The CR-V3's are hard to put in Wong. since they have a little groove
on one side. Even if they were, the camera was absolutely fine except
for a problem with a few lenses. When I looked through the manual
again, all I could figure was that the backup battery would hold the
date and time settings. Does it say anything else I've missed?

Correction:

The CR-V3's are hard to put in Wong.

I meant to say wrong, and I know of no one named Wong that requires
batteries ;-)

I moved the batteries from the camera to the grip. I have been using
the CR-V3 variety. As mentioned, I think the important part was the
rebooting that occurred when I removed the batteries entirely.

My question is, have you since tried it again WITHOUT the grip? And if so,
did it revert to not working with those lenses again, or did it keep on
keepin' on?

tan.

  2) My lens problem with my *ist D has gone away. FYI, I had three FA
  lenses (50 1.4, 100 macro 2.8 and 135 2.8) that could not send
aperture info or AF with the *ist D body, even though they worked fine on
the
MZ-S in A mode. Other A, FA, and sigma AF lenses worked just fine.
Extensive contact cleaning did nothing. They began to work after I
added the grip, for which I took the batteries out of the camera.
I'm convinced this is what worked and that it must have been some
 electronic glitch.

It could have been, of course, but are you 100% sure that you actually
removed all battery power?

I tried what Tanya suggested, and the camera/lens works without the
grip. I also waited a while before re-inserting the batteries inot
the body. Since there is not little button battery hiding somewhere
that I know of, the camera should have been completely powered down.

There is a button battery on mine. It resides under a not so little
circular cover that unscrews. The button battery is a CR2016. The
battery cover is on the bottom of the camera body.

Oops, I missed that. So now the interesting question: what gets reset
when you remove the main batteries and what is kept in memory by the
back-up. A little experimentation showed me that it keeps things like
date, time, PF settings, etc. The manual also recommends removing the
 batteries for long term storage.
