Rick

Thanks for your comments. We spent a W/E at a rustic lodge in the area.
Unfortunately it was very hot (over 40°C every day) - thank goodness for
aircons!

The back lighting & glare was terrible. That's about as good as I could
get. Also, the shutter speed was a bit slow (1/1000) for H/H at 500mm.

Lake Panic is an impoundment on a tributary of the Sabi River which runs
past the Skukuza Camp. The bird hide is on a bend in the upper reaches -
a Mecca for bird photographers who sit there in numbers for the whole
day with their long lenses. Various animals appear on the banks too. Not
my scene at all - we just paid a short visit.

Interesting indeed. Darters are unknown species in our area.
About sharpness: with most Pentax camera's I think there is only one
acceptable setting for wild life that is AF-S with spot AF aiming for
the eyes while saying a little prayer .

Re: I'm looking for an external drive bay

2023-07-18 Thread Larry Colen
I realized that I was asking the wrong question. An external NVME SSD over
USB-C would give me much better performance, and I really only need access to
the large drives when rummaging through my full archive, rather than my working
files.

The SSD would be quieter and faster than spinny drives, and would be excellent
for first level "backup". In a while, when I run out of space on my current
drives, I could build a new NAS for my everything archive, and relegate my
current drives to offsite backup.

I think I have that in thunderbolt-2 and have been less than thrilled with the
issues I had with T-bolt until I switched over to USB-3. I was just going to
take the drives out of it and put them in something else. I wonder if there is
something wonky with mine.

Re: I'm looking for an external drive bay

2023-07-18 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I've been using OWC's Mercury Elite Pro drive enclosures for many years, one
per drive. Not one has failed or had any problems at all, and they're as quiet
as your drives are.
https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATA_FW800_FW400_USB

My standard setup has four of them connected to a USB 12 port hub, connected to
whatever Mac mini or MacBook I happen to be using, either to a direct USB 3
port or to a TB port using a TB to USB3 adapter.

If you want something to reduce cabling, the OWC Mercury Elite Pro Dual with
3-Port Hub handles two drives with up to 40TB capacity. I could see moving to
two of these enclosures to reduce desktop clutter, but have no particular
motivation to do so based upon failures and such so far.

I'm looking for an external drive bay

2023-07-18 Thread Larry Colen
When I got a trashcan mac I also got an OWC thunderbolt 2 external drive bay to
go with it. Unfortunately, not only is it a bit loud, but when I use it as
thunderbolt rather than USB it has a tendency to disconnect from my mac, so
that I'm constantly getting warnings about missing drives etc.

Rather than investing in another external T-bolt bay, I want to get a USB-C
external drive bay, and just use a T-bolt to USB-C adapter. USB-C cables are a
lot less expensive, and I'll be able to use it with newer machines.

I don't need RAID. At the moment my backup strategy uses multiple copies of
JBOD drives. I don't mind it being something that would allow me to switch to
RAID later, or I'll just invest in a newer NAS when it's time to retire my
older Synology.

My main archive is large enough that I don't want to hang multiple external
drives off my computer.

I need at least two drive bays, three or more would be better.

Does anyone have experience with a good, quiet, preferably inexpensive, USB-C
external drive enclosure?

I had intended to use the X-T5 and the Viltrox 75/1.2 today, but the
camera refused to play with my Photogenics.
The camera worked just fine with the small dedicated flash that came
with my X-T1, but refused to work with my Pocket Lizards, or my old
Pentax IR flash trigger, or even hooked directly to the box with a PC cord.
It turns out there is a useless menu item to turn the PC socket on or
off, with the default being off.
As the camera comes, nothing works, find this obscure setting and
everything works.
Of course I didn't discover this until after the session.

My fall back position today was the K1 and D FA* 85/1.4, so it's not
like as if I was in bad shape, it's superb camera/lens combination and
it served me well, as it always does.

Anyway, this is a simple 3 light set-up with the lens set to f/2.8.

Re: Funny looking squirrels

2022-08-04 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Nicely captured and presnted.

Our fox doesn't seem interested in birdseed; there are plenty of
squirrels, rabbits and chickens around to attract them. Deer are, however,
a huge problem with bird feeders; I now only put out 2 thistle feeders for
the finches, plus two suet and nuts/berries feeders for the woodpeckers,
high up so the deer don't go after them.
When I used to put out sunflower seed, I used a nice "squirrel-proof" metal
feeder. One evening I found it on the ground, and reinstalled it higher up
and more securely . That mnigghrt it was agin on the ground. Then my
neighbor showed me an image of the young black bear that was causing the
problem. That is when I decided only thistle and small suet feeders high
up.

Thanks for sharing.

Funny looking squirrels

2022-08-04 Thread Larry Colen
A common problem when people try to put out birdseed is squirrels going after
the birdseed.

Lately I’ve been having something else doing the same:

less, but they’re much better than what I’ve been able to get so far:

The one in the frames after 399 is smaller, more skittish and doesn't seem to
have the spot on its hip

Given that the original poster was at least considering a non-ransomware

Someone wh worked for Delphi.

I feel this thread may be a thinly-disguised party for bashing
the Pentax 67.

If so, some basic truths must be revealed.

First of all, you should know that the Pentax 67 was never
designed as an actual camera for shooting: it was a display
device to be hung out in front of camera stores, over the
sidewalk. The first photographer to actually cock and fire one
noticed that, though his hair had turned white from the
shockwave, his sinuses had instantly cleared. After the hernia
operation, he used his Pentax 67 constantly, especially at the
onset of a cold or flu.

Body-builders were also attracted to the Pentax 67. They didn't
care that portraits from these cameras always showed people who
looked wide-eyed and startled, as if they had been recently
frightened by a loud noise. These cameras were great for pumped
and ripped upper-bodies.

Press photogs cherished their P67's when covering hurricanes and
tidal waves: they'd shoot with their Nikons and lash themselves
to their Pentaxes! But I digress.

You asked about the kerplunk, er kachunk, eh? Well, long, long
ago, before "red eye" was a problem for flash photographers,
Pentax 67 shooters were coping with the problem of "red EAR":

Color portraits and candids shot with Pentax 67's showed subjects
with crimson ears from the repeated auditory abuse they suffered
each time the camera was fired.

By the way, rumor has it that Pentax is currently
researching a solution based on existing red-eye reduction
technology (a series of quick pre-flashes before the real
flash fires).

The new Pentax 67 may include new red-EAR reduction
technology, which slams a heavy screen door a few times
before the actual exposure, to numb the subjects' ears
immediately before the shutter actually trips.

The other problem directly attributable to the impact of the
Pentax 67 mirror-return, is a type of focus blur. After the
shutter-release is tripped, the sonic boom begins advancing from
the camera toward the subject at mach 1. The wave-front reaches
the subjects just as the shutter opens, and the subjects are
knocked backwards, sometimes by mere millimeters, sometimes by a
zipcode or two.

Consequently, Pentax 67 lenses have an extra focusing mark
on their focusing-rings, similar to the "infra-red focus"
mark on other lenses.

This SSR pre-focus mark ("Sonic Subject Relocation")
predicts the focus for the spot where the subjects will
come to rest after the blast. It is to be used only when
shooting the P67 in small unmuffled rooms.

Re: Looking for funny text about 67 mirror slap

2021-02-25 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
It could also part crowds.

Decades ago, I was in DC on a lovely morning and decided I wanted to get a
different angle on the Lincoln Memorial. I took my film 35 mm SLR out of
my camera bag and started wandering around, just looking through the
viewfinder from various vantage points. I never got off a shot. Every
time I thought I might have something, someone in the throng pushed or
jostled me, or just stepped right in front of me.

I went back to the camera bag to put away my SLR. On a whim, instead of
closing the bag, I pulled out my Pentax 6X7, with the wooden grip and the
huge lens. Heavy as it was, I trudged back towards the memorial.
Miraculously, the mob in front of the memorial parted, to let me through.
People actually moved aside and watched in awe as I struggled to get that
demon up to my eye and frame an image. I swear I heard an audible "AHH"
when I pressed the shutter release and that resounding "CLUNK" bounced off
the Marble walls. 'Twas a strange but rewarding experience.

Looking for funny text about 67 mirror slap

2021-02-25 Thread Ralf R Radermacher

Way back there used to be a text somewhere in the internet, joking about
the 67's mirror slap and somethong the author called sonic subject
relocation or some such. The theory was that the mirror slap was so loud
it would push a person backwards and result in unsharp photos.

Does anyone on here remember this and have a link or a copy?

I can only accomodate 500 pc puzzles easily which I gather, solve, then list on
ebay..
I certainly don't need (no pun) to bake bread - easy access here to much of it,
Definitely doing it
for the pleasure and th learning.. I'm usually more a soup an entry girl too.

The ones we have are Melbourne-specific, and we purchased them with mounting kits
& frames. We plan to hang them - our place has way too many bare walls :-)

Afraid I haven't graduated to baking bread yet :-) Our local bakery
does a very good sourdough at a good price (also does the best meat

I've been cooking lots of soups and other meals though.
We have five 1000-piece jigsaws awaiting a table large enough to do

G'day Pete

Good to here from you in Lockdown Melbourne. Hang in there - the case numbers
are dropping.

Watching case numbers up here with some trepidation but they seem to be holding
steady at around 10 or less per day, for now.

Interesting photo - but the somewhat sombre feeling to it seems to fit the mood
of most of us these days.

Cheers & stay safe

Have you discovered the film cannister lid that works as a lenscap for the DA40?

Maiden Castle is in Dorset, not really the Cotswolds, but doable if they have a

If they're in that area they should also visit Wells., which is still medieval,
and Britain's smallest city. http://www.visitwellssomerset.co.uk/

Stonehenge too, of course.

There's so much good food in London it can be impossible to choose and you end
up eating McDonalds... I would recommend a visit to Brick Lane in London, where
there are hundreds of excellent Indian (Bangladeshi really) restaurants, as
well as numerous other types of restaurant in nearby Spitalfields. Upmarket
Indian eating is available at Cafe Spice Namaste.
https://www.cafespice.co.uk/

A site worth visiting in that area if they can get to it is Denis Severs House:
https://www.dennissevershouse.co.uk/

There is a cluster of good restaurants in and around Smithfield, Clerkenwell
and Farringdon, where I work, including Michelin-starred Club Gascon and its
baby brother Comptoir Gascon. They also have a place on nearby Chancery Lane
called Cigalon.
http://www.cigalon.co.uk/
http://www.clubgascon.com/about.php
http://www.comptoirgascon.com/

On Clerkenwell Road and Saint John's Square there are several good but not
Michelin-standard eateries, including, if they can find it (on Jerusalem
Passage), the ever-popular-with-PDMLers Dovetail.
http://dovepubs.com/aboutdovetail/

A short walk away you have St John, another Michelin place famous for
"nose-to-tail eating": https://stjohnrestaurant.com/a/restaurants/smithfield ,
and Hix Oyster and Chop House:
https://www.hixrestaurants.co.uk/menu/hix-oyster-chop-house/

Then there's the other 50,000,000 streets of London... Whereabouts in London
are they staying?

If you're in the Cotswolds and going to Avebury, up the Fossway there's a Roman
Villa that's worth a visit. In the general area, there's a wonderful earthworks

For good places to eat, you can't really go wrong at any of those places. Bath
has some great restaurants. The Wye Valley has some nice pubs so I believe and
if you can't find somewhere good to eat in London there ain't much point in

If you're in the Cotswolds and going to Avebury, up the Fossway there's a Roman
Villa that's worth a visit. In the general area, there's a wonderful earthworks
called "Maiden's Castle" that's worth a half day hike, and of course there's
the huge Uffington White Horse and the walk along the ridge above it, including
a Neolithic burial site called Waylen's Smithy (the model that JRR Tolkien used
for the Barrow Downs in Lord of the Rings...).

one that fits on my monitor nicely.

Roosevelt Island is in the East river - The neighborhood viewed here is
a part of Queens borough called Astoria.. bordering on Long Island
city.. the area where
Amazon has decided to build another headquarters - that's a short
distance to the right of the birdge you see here. ..

Not a good move it seems to many, as the addition of a staff of 25,000
(yes I said 25,000) to an area where the transportation is already stressed
from crowding as well as weakening infrastructure...

I was visiting a friend on Roosevelt and the view is on the way to the
subway from her place - I was hurrying to get home before dark.. love
winter light.
taken with the canon power shot Sx120 .. I often take The Pentax K5
when visiting her, but I was carrying too much to bring her so too heavy.

What a lovely cityscape! I love the way the bridge leads the eye to the
tall buildings on the left. The sky is quite marvelous.

It that the Queensborough Bridge or the Ed Koch?

That's only when they were "finished". They were started up to 500 years
earlier.

Given enough time, manpower and motivation, man has long been able to
create architectural wonders. Look what the unknown builders of Newgrange
did 5,000 years ago.

Thanks, Paul.

It took 170 years to build, but it is amazing nonetheless.
