OT: Rotties. Re: [meta] Reply-to list (was Re: FS: Low-mileage K-7 body, WR kit zoom, Tamron 24-135 lens)
On 19/07/2013 1:20 PM, Bob Sullivan wrote: Bill, Thanks, I appreciate your insight and will forward on to my son Bill. His Golden really likes people and kids in particular. My daughter-in-law is a special ed teacher who had 'behavior disorders' classrooms until this year. She is probably better with the dog than he is, certainly better reading the dog. But all good advice and insights from you. A few more things about the breed. They can be quite reticent around strangers, which is a huge temperament difference from what you would be getting from a Golden. I think with Rotties, it is really important to meet the parents and see if you like them, as the apple tends to fall quite near the tree with dogs. They tend to be accepting of people that their people are accepting of, but an approaching stranger who his person doesn't know may not be well received. Lots of socialization early on is really important with Rotties. One of the problems that Jester plagues us with is because he didn't get a lot of early socialization. A good way to get your Rottie to accept a person faster is to take the person's hand in yours and take it down to the dog's nose, showing the dog your hand, then turning it to the other person's hand, and then hold both hands in front of the dog's nose for a few moments. The dog gets both scents and will tend to discriminate the scent of the other person as a good thing. You might find this interesting. Apparently there is a link between black tan coloration and what is called resource protectiveness, which is what gives breeds like Rotties, Dobermans, GSDs and other breeds their advantage as guards. A friend of mine has a black and tan male Chihuahua. The dog is an excellent guard, given that he weighs all of 6 pounds. I stay out of his way, I'm not part of his Clan, and he attacks and bites pretty much anyone who isn't family. Really, he is an extreme example of black and tan temperament. All three of my Rotties have been very good with kids. The breeder that Jester came from had 5 Rotties living with three young kids in a not overly large house. When we did birthday party shows with the kennel club, I would often find a little kid to give Leica to for a while. It didn't matter how badly the child gave commands, Leica would do what she was told to do. As long as you could coach the kid into saying Leica, Heel at the beginning, it didn't matter what happened after that. She had been told to heel, and that was what she did until told otherwise. She would obey commands that were inadvertently said by the television. One time at a class I was in, the instructor told us to teach our dogs a new trick for the next class. The next morning as I was getting dressed, Leica was sitting beside me, and I took a sock and put it over her nose. There was my trick. A few times of saying Leica, Sock, and putting the sock on her nose, and she was pushing her nose into the opened sock. After that, it was a simple case of combining it into a recall, and the next week, I sat my dog on one side of the room, walked across the room, held a sock open and called Leica, Sock. She dutifully came across the room, stuck her nose in the sock and sat in front of me with a really put upon expression. It was the best trick ever. Soft female dogs are really easy to get along with. best bill -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Very cute. My son's 130 pound Golden Retriever is almost 10 and slowed by the heat and age. It will be a sad day when he passes, and they'll need another dog. It will be hard to find one with as much personality and friendly disposition. Maybe another Golden, but not so big next time. This one's a giant! I know you train dogs and favor Rotties. It will be a sad day when he passes, and they'll need another dog. It will be hard to find one with as much personality and friendly disposition. Maybe another Golden, but not so big next time. This one's a giant! Goldens can be very big dogs. Fortunately, they are also very soft tempered. I know you train dogs and favor Rotties. I wonder about disposition with their fearsome reputation. Intact male Rotties need a very strong willed owner, as they are generally a pretty dominant breed. Having said that, Jester is a dominant asshole, high drive dog from a high drive litter. As such, he is somewhat of a special case in this regard. At he same time, he doesn't have a mean bone in his body, he just wants his own way, and is prepared to do whatever doggie thing he needs to do to get it. A weak willed owner who is in the habit of letting the dog make his own decisions would be what we call a fail of an owner. Our last male (Rollei) had a very gentle disposition, was relatively willing to please, and for the most part, was on the same page as we were. Most Rotties that get in trouble do so because they have idiot owners who don't understand the level of engagement they have to have with their dog. When I am out with my dog, that is all I am doing. I'm not talking on my cell phone, or texting or really doing much of anything other than being with my dog. This is quite different from when I had Leica. I could trust her to not cause anyone any problems. Jester, OTOH, is quite dog aggressive (Bella, our Belgian Shepherd is worse), and will also get very aggressive with anyone who he thinks might be a threat. Hold his gaze for more than a few seconds at your own risk. As I said, he is a special case, a very exceptional dog, but not one for a weak handler, and honestly, not really a good dog in public. Investigate your breeder carefully, Rotties, while not as prone to genetic problems as Goldens, are prone to a few cancers, as well as elbow and hip dysplasia, and also, take the time to investigate your puppy's lineage. Had I done this prior to getting Jester, I would have asked for a different dog than the high drive male pick. After having him for a few months, I finally got around to tracing his lineage. Amazingly, I was able to trace his sire's side back to 1912 or thereabouts. Every male on his sire's side had a Schutzhund title, and his line had been used for all sorts of guard work in Germany, including guarding POW and concentration camps during WWII. He's a tough dog from a line of tough dogs. A good starter Rottweiler would be a soft tempered female. Leica (my first Rottie) was such a dog. Very smart, wanted to please, and didn't like to displease. As such, she was easy to train, and never made the same mistake twice (and only made a few mistakes in her nearly 11 year life). I would recommend the breed to anyone with the following caveats: *If you are not an experienced owner, pick the softest female you can from the litter. You will end up with a dog that acts sort of like a Labrador, except calmer and with a lot more brains. *If you are an experienced owner, but haven't owned a guard breed before, a soft male would be an OK choice, be prepared to put the puppy well and truly in it's place the first time it steps out of line and you will likely never have a problem again. *If you are an experienced owner, with extensive experience with guard breeds, then by all means, choose a drivey male. They are a lot of fun, and the rewards are tremendous, but they have to be handled with care around people who aren't experienced with dogs. They will push their boundaries, so it is very important to be ready, willing and ABLE to put the dog in his place at a moment's notice. In all cases, Rotties need some sort of job to keep them occupied. They are a very smart breed, and they get bored easily. Like all bored dogs, they can get destructive. Fortunately, they are quite easy to keep engaged. They like obedience work, and this should be started the same day that they come into the house. Jester carries my camera gear in a backpack when we are out. It gives him something to concentrate on, and it keeps him settled. Don't just take your dog for a walk, do some formal obedience training for a few minutes, and then walk for a while, and then do some more obedience. Find out what sort of reward system makes your dog happy, and use it. Leica was good with a tickle on the ear and being told she done good. Jester, being a lot drivier, needs more engagement from me. A nice game of tug turns his crank quite nicely, and keeps him very happy, and very willing to work. If you aren't physically up to the task of playing tug with a 125 or so pound dog with a lot of determination, a high drive male might not be the best choice,

Interesting -- even before the various lists I've been started changing their policies around a decade ago, I'd say that at least half the lists I've been on were not reply-to list. As for why, aside from the issue about boo-boos with intended private messages, it's a way to control list volume. Another reason is that some mailing lists have restricted access and anyone not on the list participating in the conversation needs to be cc'd, and the Reply-To header mucks with that. I can see how one might accidentally slip and send a private message to the list - been there, done that - but if I compare the ratio of private emails to public (entire list) emails I've sent in reply to PDML messages it's well over 100:1. That's almost certainly true for me for all mailing lists I've been on. But the point is that the cost of sending a private e-mail public is also much higher, and I've seen a lot of mildly embarrassing, some moderately embarrasing, and a few outright damaging (e.g. disclosing major secrets). I don't think it's 100:1 in that direction, but I also don't think it's a slam dunk that the cost/benefit analysis is totally oriented toward reply-to list on this one ground. (I do realize, of course, that reply-to sender doesn't completely prevent stupid disclosure of private/secret info, one only needs to look at damnyouautocorrect.com to prove otherwise.) -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

That explains why my other lists have died, then. /sarcasm So go fuck yourself. Why would you participate in a mailing list and not want replies sent to the... list? Makes no sense. (I do realize, of course, that reply-to sender doesn't completely prevent stupid disclosure of private/secret info, one only needs to look at damnyouautocorrect.com to prove otherwise.) -- Hugs and backrubs -- I break Rule 6http://rule6.info/ * * * Help a hearing-impaired person: http://rule6.info/hearing.html -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Reply to list is superior. My error was in responding to a threaded conversation. It happens. Without reply to list much of what we say would just go back to the person we are responding to and not the list. I know this would get me almost every single time. Hey if you're dumb enough to post to a public list something you definitely don't want the whole list to see, well you get what you deserve because you've just proven yourself to be a dumbass. Then again I'm not one to say something to another person that I would be afraid to have repeated. Better to just be that way in general in everything you do. [meta] Reply-to list (was Re: FS: Low-mileage K-7 body, WR kit zoom, Tamron 24-135 lens)
From: Aahz Maruch a...@pobox.com More seriously, does anyone remember why this list is set for reply-to list? Very few other lists I'm on these days are set that way, precisely because the failure mode is worse with reply-to list (screw up with reply-to sender and you only send something private you meant public). (I'm not at all pushing to change, just figured it might be worth revisiting, haven't seen any mention in the ~6 months I've been here.) Maybe for the simple and obvious fact that it's a list?
