180mm lens for Pentax 35mm
Is there anyone making a 180mm lens comparable in quality to the A*200/2.8 that will fit or can be adapted to the K mount? No need for auto focus, just good optical quality. shel

You could try Sigma EX 180/3.5 - slightly darker, but equally good at macro (it has 1:1 magnification) and in infinity (thanks to floating elements). Low chromatic aberrations (it uses ED glass), quite sharp even wide open, real circular shape 9-blades diaphragm. It has good MF feeling, although AF gear noise is then noticable slightly. -- Best Regards Sylwek

Doesn't leica make something around that length for the R series? William Robb

Well, seems odd to me, but what do I know. Not sure if floating elements are a good thing, unless you drop the lens in a lake groan. No need to make scans, but thanks for the offer ... too much time and trouble for the result. If I'm more interested in the lens, I may ask later. Best bet for me would be to put it on a camera and burn a roll of film. However, I'm leaning more towards a simpler lens - just a plain old tele, no AF, no magic elements. Sheesh, how boring L shel Sylwester Pietrzyk wrote: No, it has floating elements (group of lenses that moves independent from main focusing group), that takes care of optimum performance at all fosuing distances. Tamron SP 180mm f:2.5 LD [IF] is a beauty. Two low dispersion elements and focuses to 1,2 meters with a very short focus throw. Only thing bothering me with it is that is has some pincushion distortion. Actually more than the Tamron 80-200 2.8 SP LD at *any* focal length! The Pentax Fan has it as the only third party telephoto prime lens in this list (follow link to pictures of it): http://www.pentax-fan.jp/lens35.asp?fl=Tty=K And a comparison between the Tamron, a 180mm Nikkor and a 70-200 f:2.8 Sigma (in japanese): http://www.akina.ne.jp/~dvkoji/page8/01003photo.html Sigma made a huge 180mm f:2.8 AF macro lens which went to 1:2. The current model is the AF 180mm f:3.5 on which I guess is very highly regarded (and goes to 1:1). -Matti

Unless you are intending to do macro, don't get a macro. There have been several version of the Nikon 180/2.8. They are wonderful for people and give great out of focus backgrounds. The MF ones aren't very expensive used. (you could probably get one with a matching body for $500) The throat dia. is smaller than the K mount. One possible problem is that the flim plane to lens mount flange distance is, I think, greater on Nikons. If it is, you would lose infinity focus without something something fancy.
