Prices crashing on Pentax-F 1.7x AF TC?

2013-10-16 Thread Darren Addy
Seem to be a LOT of Pentax-F 1.7x AF TCs on the market these days and
recently they have been selling for just $300 and under. Doesn't seem
that long ago when $350 for one was a Good Deal.

Makes me wonder if the replacement HD TC isn't about to hit the bricks
(and I wonder what it will be priced at?). Makes me think that if
someone had one they were THINKING about selling that it might be wise
to do it soon (or take the chance that with demand dropping as some
buyers opt for the new one that prices drop even further). Much
depends on the price of the new one, of course, and if it has all of
the same capabilities (or more).

I've managed to get my 1.7x TC to focus with a Tokina 400mm f/5.6 and
a Sigma CAT 400mm f/5.6, but it does need good light. I've had no
issues whatsoever with a 200mm f/4.

For shits and giggles I once mounted the TC on a Sigma CAT 600mm f/8
and did get it to AF; it was very sunny and I chose contrasty
subjects, but I was still impressed.

All this on my K10D, by the way.

3.5 with the 1.7x adapter gives ~5.6 as the maximum aperture so that

that's reassuring to know. i guessed it could be because of the
slower f/4, though the user manual does list a f3.5 zoom...

I believe the TC is only claimed to work with lenses faster than f4.0
(probably because the auto-focus logic claims to want a lens of f5.6 or
faster, and a 1.7TC on a f4 lens ends up with a maximum aperture of f6.8)

The AF1.7x works just fine with the A* 300/2.8 ...

Your understanding is correct. In that respect, I suppose it can be said that
it is not a "true" AF adaptor. Sorry to have misled you. However, I wouldn't
say that it is totally useless for an AF lens (I use it with an FA 300mm 2.8),
as it can be used in the same fashion as you described for the mf lenses.

It is my hope (and I'm sure that of plenty others) that Pentax eventually gets

There's a typo on that page, it should be 1.7x, not 17.x (boy, wouldn't that be
interesting). In case the page doesn't load properly, that should be the Pentax
1.7x AF adapter that you're looking at. You'll get very mixed responses with
respect to how well the AF part of this TC actually works (basically you have
to get it "close" to focused, and then the TC will do the rest)... but at least
you now know it exists.

The best TC for FA*200/2.8 is A2X-L, as suggested by Pentax. However, it is
not AF.

I haven't tried that combination, but the 1.7X AF T/C works just fine
