Re: Any compact digitals with wide-angle lenses?

2004-06-19 Thread Bob W
Hi,

I am entirely unfamiliar with the digital camera market. Does anybody
have any suggestions, please, for something like that - probably a
ps - that's cheap and can produce reasonable quality prints (when required)
 up to about 4x6 (10x15cm).

You can get the recently discontinued versions of the Optio series
remarkably cheaply (compared to their new price) at various outlets.
Although the cost may appear excessive (~£200 for 3Mp) at first, it at
least allows for the possibility that some shots might be qualitatively
 good enough to be keepers.

Thanks to everybody who helped with my question. I bought a 2mp Nikon
Coolscan 2200, which was very cheap and seems to do what's needed. It
has a decent little zoom, is small, light and easy to operate.

I took 31 pictures with it this afternoon, in rather flat, dull light
- the sun went in when I walked out of the camera shop!

It's very different from using a manual film SLR. Framing is
different; I have to get used to autofocus; the lens is very slow and
the sensitivity of the camera is the equivalent of ISO 50, so it's
very slow too; and the shutter lag is not what I'm used to.
Nevertheless, it was enjoyable to use and should serve its purpose
very well.

Here are some snaps, resized and sharpened with Irfan, otherwise
straight from the Nikon's mouth:

How compact?

Nikon's 5000 had a 28mm equivelent lens. I don't know what the
followup model is called (5400 maybe?), but I think it has the same
lens.

I haven't found any pocketable digital compacts with a 28mm wide angle
lens since my old (and sadly now dead) Canon Powershot from many years
ago. That was a 1.3mp camera though and very limited compared to
modern models.

My wife had me look for one several months ago. I was surprised to find
that the last compact/pocket digital that went as wide as 28mm was the
1.3MP Canon PowerShot A50, which was introduced 5 or 6 years ago.

The Ricoh G4 Wide had also recently been annnounced at the time, but with
no plans to sell it here in the USA. The press release for the G4 Wide
mentioned a predecessor model that was just as wide, but all I ever found
on that earlier model was variations on the press release.

I found an A50 on eBay for about $50. The shutter response is glacial by
today's standards (even after pressing the shutter button halfway), and
4x6 prints were just okay. My wife is okay with it, but maybe she'll try
the Ricoh G4 Wide sometime. Looks like it's available from Australia for
AU $466 (US $321):

Also there are two G4 Wides on eBay right now for US $259.99.

I use film for my hobby but I need a camera for job
sites because my boss wants immediate turn-around. (I
need to have stuff on a drive immediately...so that he
can look at it a week later - it's the usual false
perception that speed is oh-so important. I have to
draw the line somewhere, so I'll get a digital compact
for work but I am refusing to buy a cell phone.
 Geeze, I'm grumpy today.)

Ricoh have also recently released the 5Mpx GX, with a 28-85 equiv lens.
With the low shutter lag, aperture priority/manual exposure, and even
spotmetering, I am thinking about getting one myself. I have the very
nice GR1s film compact, and I have to say that 28mm is one of the
sharpest lenses in my collection. So I have great faith in their GR lenses.

that sounds like a good idea. I will have a look around. Are 3
megapixels generally considered a reasonable number? Are 2Mp or 2.5Mp
too few?

A 2MP camera will allow 4x6 prints to be made at almost 300dpi, which is far
better than most printers can manage. And if you would like to print the
occasional 8x12 print then a 2MP camera would still deliver a reasonable
150dpi.
