Now, we're getting somewhere. Far better.

In the second one, you might want to selectvely de-saturate the blue
tint in the steam at the ground on the left and maybe bring up the
shadows a tad if this doesn't create too much noise.

Yeah. I think maybe I should have left it in colour. He was all red
around the eyes, nose and cheeks. It was not flattering but perhaps a
more accurate portrayal of his condition.

This fellow was walking along carrying a bag from the liquor store. He
said, "Today's my birthday, take my picture!"

Which I did.

He said, "20 years a drunk!" And it sounded like he was right. Poor

I think all of the old action shots of me with my bike show me actively lolling 
about at rest stops and at the end of long rides. Now I am going to have to go

Yeah, I kinda felt the same way. Cluttered but it somehow worked. And I

Clearly true. However, Flickr doesn't make this stuff up. It reads the
tags assigned to the image. If somebody is lazy with their copy 
paste (or for some other reason is not accurate in the use of their
tags) then you are going to get incorrect results. That image has a
smc P-A 300mm F2.8 ED (IF) tag. Garbage in - garbage out.

for carrying around f2.8 long glass you can get the [K} 300mm f4.0, 
(available at KEH for less than 1/10 the price, which even though it's a 
big heavy beast is still half the weight of the A* 2.8.  Considering 
size weight and cost, which lens am I more likely to haul around with me...

It depends what you are into. With its ED glass and internal focusing
it would make a super astrophotography lens and it would be best
mounted to a German Equatorial Mount or onto a telescope with a driven
fork mount. It would also be great with a monopod or tripod on the
sideline of a sporting event.

And I've now GOT the M*.

Even on the sidelines at a sporting event I'll take the 1 stop hit, save
my back a little and take the f4.0. So the other shooters with the f2.8
glass will laugh and point at me, when they're in traction, I'll visit
them at the hospital.

There's a big difference in optical capabilities between these three
lenses, the 300/4 variants are positively soft compared to the
A300/2.8, having owned and used both. I still have the A300/2.8 which
although unwieldy is a great lens when you need the speed and reach
and combined with the 1.7AF TC it becomes an excellent AF combo.

I think John Francis has that setup.

I know that the A* 200/2.8 is a wonderful lens, and am curious how the 
DA* 200/2.8 compares optically.

Meanwhile, money I'll spend on the repairs I'm doing on one of my sheds

list, as well as a K-3.  Or even buy me a 645D, and a nice set of lenses

I have the A* 300 f4 and have to say that while it can be very good, it
falls short of being a truly excellent lens. It also falls short in the
close focus department. (Or maybe that should be that it falls long in
the close focus department.) I use the 1.7x converter on an A*400 f2.8
and it is a tremendous help, but the AF range is fairly limited, not
like a true AF lens, in my experience - it needs to be pre focused to a
fairly narrow tolerance. But, the AF adapter is still better than my
eyesight for fast focusing.

The M* and A* 300mm f4 lenses were the smallest and lightest of their
class and three of the front 4 elements in the front group are ED
glass. It was, I believe, before Internal Focusing had come into use.
In optical design, something has to give, and the Pentax optical
designers decided (wisely I think) to sacrifice close focusing,
probably thinking that someone who uses a 300mm lens is probably not
buying it to focus on something 10 feet away. In any event, closer
focus CAN be achieved, if one truly wants it, through extension tubes
(though at the sacrifice of the infinity end of the scale). I believe
those lenses were also sold before the age of APO lenses, though the
M* and A* would probably be classed as near-APO.

Well, I just did some test framings (never actually pushed the shutter
button) in my dining room with the A* 300 f4. It's a jewel of a lens in
terms of build and cosmetics, that's for sure, but the 4 meter / 13 foot
minimum focusing distance is still a challenge. While i have hung onto
this lens for years, I almost never use it. For smaller birds and
wildlife you either have to be stealthy and get close, or use a longer
telephoto to put you out of the circle of fear. It is best o get close,
because then you do not have haze and other atmospheric distortions that
degrade long distnace / mega telephoto shot, but getting close can be a
lot of work. For a 300mm, for small birds (e.g. finches) or small
mammals (e.g. chipmunks) tha tmeans being 10 to 6 feet away. A blind,
bait, or invisibility cloak is probably needed, but it can be done with
a little effort. In its day, the 13 minimum focusing distance would
probably have been considered to be quite close, and one can always use
extension tubes or close up diopters, but a closed focus distance would
be more desirable IMO. The minimum focusing distance of the A* 300 f4
would be fine for larger subjects - deer, bears, athletes, etc... and on
an APCS-C body it would probably be fine.

The F* or FA* 300mm f/4.5 is the one you want.  Focus down to 2m and so sharp 
you'll cut yourself.

But the lesson here is quite simple: Control everything.  Light and pose.
Of course the costume, but that hides where the real work was done.
It is also not that it's really hard to do, but it does take significant
preparation time to design what you want, often on paper first, and then put
the plan into action.
Sort of like sports but much more fun, imo.
It's all very beautifully done.

Didn't try but I would guess not, since these are sized for the web and viewed 
at 72 ppi,regardless of how they were shot.

Rob, I recently had an interesting experience where I took my time and 
spent the effort to understand the reasoning behind certain person's 
sayings on the certain forum. I must say that in this very specific 
case, although considered pretty much a clown, this guy was talking 
quite sensible things, even if his wording was not very good. But having 
understood him, I agreed with him, because his logic was actually in 
line with my notions...


Specifically in this case - I've had FA 17-28 fish eye zoom by Pentax 
and indeed after a short while I lost my interest in it. That is not to 
say that everyone should suffer the same fate as I did, but do agree 
with me that I could have my reasons to agree with general notion of 
K.R.'s words here...

I could care less what Ken Rockwell has to say as I don't follow his
site or ramblings.

Fish-eye lenses can be gimmicky and cliché when over-used, like any
specialist optical effect. That said, I've licensed several images
made with a fish-eye and even won an award or two with photos that
were made using a fish-eye lens. I don't own one at present, but I've
had several over the years and always enjoyed working with them.

So it's easy to jeer at Ken, and you might not find fish-eye lenses
particularly to your taste, but as usual sweeping generalizations are
mostly just hot-air.

I bought my 8/3.5 on the assumption that it was the photographic
equivalent of a bag of cheeto's. Optical junk food, enjoyable on occasion,
but not a staple part of healthy diet.

To my surprise, it is proving to be far more useful than I ever imagined. 
I would say that if there is any one thing that defines my personal style,
it is tight framing.  I've found that the easiest way to get a good photo
is not to put more good stuff in, but to take out anything that isn't
good.  So, I'll use a narrower field of view and include as few extraneous
details as I can.

As such, a fisheye is exactly not the lens that fits my shooting style. 
So, when I got my fisheye, I figured I'd play with it for a few days, have
fun, and it would be on hand for the rare occasions when it is what I
need. I've been surprised over the past couple of weeks by how frequently
those rare occasions come up.

There is certainly a lot to learn about using such a wide lens.  It
includes a huge amount of background, but things are often so small at any
distance, that they are more background color than compositional elements.
If something is very close, particularly at the edge of the frame, you'll
get the wild fisheye distortion, but further away, particularly toward the
center of the frame, they look normal, just like using a mild wide angle
on a smaller sensor (go figure).

I think that a fisheye lens is like HDR, they are both easy to
spectacularly misuse, but can be extremely useful in the proper
circumstances.
