Re: CDs for Photo Storage
PAUL STENQUIST writes: As far as I've been able to determine, they're all exactly the same. Some have bette plastic storage boxes. This seems to be the determining element. Some CD readers won't read some CD technologies. For example, I can make a video CD that will play on my DVD player. If I use a CD-R, the DVD player won't even recogonize it as a disk, but if I use a CD-RW, it will see it and is able to play the content. I've also heard that the similar is true of the older CD-ROM readers -- they'll read commercial CDs and CD-Rs, but not CD-RWs. Wouldn't suprise me if some audio CD players have some other sort of restriction. The modern generation of computer CD-ROM drives seem to be able to read any CD technology thrown at them though, so for data purposes, any should work. As far as the quality of the disks themselves, the packaging of the disks is not really a tangible measure of quality :-) -- some disks truely are defective (case in point, my stack of Maxell CD-Rs, which had some unexcusable manufacturing defects burried deep in the stack). hope that helps, patbob ([EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED]) - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. CDs for Photo Storage
Hi Gang, What should I look for when buying CDs for storing scanned photos and negs? Are there different grades of CDs, some perhaps being better suited for music and others for use with photos on the computer? Any brands especially worth considering? I once received a music CD that was burned using another list members CD writer and it didn't play on my computer but worked just fine on my regular stereo system. Is that a possibility when using a CD for photos? I'll be scanning and burning on another machine. OTOH, I've never had a problem using the CDs that the local lab scanned. So, what's up with CDs? What must I know in order to make a wise choice? -- Shel (Digitally Dysfunctional) Belinkoff mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. I hear the gold ones are better, but I don't know for a fact. I've been doing OK with Memorex and TDK... So far I have never had a burned CD die on me (or give incompatibility problems) in about 4 years of burning. j -- --- Juan J. Re: CDs for Photo Storage
You should be find with any brand your CD-RW manufacturer recommends. Kodak Gold have been recommended in other newsgroups but I understand they are no longer made unless you stumble upon a stored supply. Kodak GoldSilver should be fine. I've been using Fujifilm 700MB 16X CD-Rs on my Plextor with nary a problem, writing at 16X There should be no problem with a data CD including image data - audio CDs are different, though I'm not expert enough to explain how or why.
