I wish I'd put some money on it before I went and checked

with about 820 hits with Ann Sanfedele in quotes - all me.

(well, if you can believe similar pages the top 70 or so
are certainly me.)

Boy,we have a lot of time on our hands, don't we?

Citations

2006-07-24 Thread Don Williams
This is quite interesting. Since we are all looking for our names I did
a search for my own full name, in inverted commas, and got 529 hits --
all me. Some go back to publications as far back as the mid 1970s --
most refer to recent postings.

Of course Don Williams returns about 1.2 million hits of which a few
hundredths of a percent are me. I've done searches for myself before but
usually in association with other words and not in inverted commas;
because, with a name like Don Williams, direct searching for the name is
hopeless. There are at least two pretty well know people with that name
out of hundreds. One sings the other illustrates. However, the
interesting part of this is that I found some of my older publications
cited in some recent papers. I had no idea they'd made /any kind/ of
impression -- let alone a lasting one.

Well Google returns 747,000 hits on Mark Roberts.
The good news is that I'm up to number four in the rankings. Hooray!
The bad news is that I'm still behind Mark Roberts the Streaker :(
(That is, behind as in lower in the Google rankings. I don't know
that being behind him in real life would be better or worse than being
ahead or him. Depends on which way you're looking I suppose...)

Scott Loveless returns 502 search results. Numbers 5, 6, and 9 of
the top ten reference me. Number 9 is the most interesting,
referencing a recent PDML posting by our very own list guy!

What you get is indeed influenced by asking for that specific term, as Don did
by putting the full name in quotes.

On D. K. Whaley I got 95,800 hits. Preposterous!
So, I tried D. K. Whaley and got 68 hits!
Don Whaley, 1840 hits
Keith whaley, my usual 'name', got 738 hits.

While a number of the hits were indeed accurate, and DID reflect information
hits, but even then a fairly large number were not me.

Now *I* know I'm not an agricultural taxonomist, a priest, a rock star, a
scientist, don't llve in the U.K., etc.
But, anyone just trying to see what and who I am, and Google me, wouldn't know
most of that.

On the other hand, anyone who thinks their name is a bit rare and unique only
has to Google it to see they're quite wrong! grin
