Re: DS problems

2007-12-13 Thread P. J. Alling
Well hell, if I sent it in for repair it was going to cost at least
$200. Might as well try the simple fix first. At worst I'd have to
wait a couple of weeks to find out it was unrepairable than look into
used Ds/Ds2, (at maybe a cost of $300 if was lucky), or saving my
pennies for a K10D while I used my *ist D, (and maybe used up some of
that B&W 35mm film I've got in an LX).. It's always good to have a backup.

Here you can buy CRC contact cleaner in electronic supplies shops.

Web page: http://www.crcindustries.com/ei/content/damage.aspx?PID=Panel2_4
or:
http://www.crcind.com/csp/web/home.csp

I am sure there are other companies which make the same stuff, if you
can't find that brand were you live. Make sure you use a residue free
contact cleaner designed to clean electronics equipment.

This stuff is great. My old man uses it (CRC CO) where he works for

"Contact cleaner" is not a good idea. Many of them include a lubricant. Doing

Well now they have contact cleaner and tuner cleaner, (the tuner cleaner
has lube the contact doesn't), I didn't recognize the primary chemical
agent in the contact cleaner, didn't think to write it down, and I'm
trying to find it's formula on line to see what it might do the plastic.
Yes of course they _don't_ list it on their site.

Well, if it were under warranty it would be a no brainer. I've had the
poor thing for almost two years now and I have it on manual a lot so it
gets quite a work out. In fact I justed checked and the first shot I
made with it is dated 12-21-2005. I's been trouble free until now so I
can't complain much.

Color used to be lubricated IIRC. I'm not sure that's called for here.
They used to sell something we called tuner cleaner, (which wasn't it's
actual name, but wasn't the color contact cleaner), I used to clean up
the brushed aluminum front panels on stereo components really nicely.
It's funny but I never thought of cleaning actual contacts with it.

Find a real electronics or industrial supply store, and ask them for
residue-free contact cleaner. It is very important that it be
residue-free.

Use it sparingly, spraying and rotating the knob, until you no longer
get the jittery response.

As a side note, the mechanism of the scroll wheel in a mouse is very
similar, and can be fixed in the same way.

I didn't even think about the possibility of shooting it in there
under the dial without actually disassembling anything. Good idea.

Not "pop the top and hit it with some Radio Shack contact cleaner"?

Gently, of course, so you don't fill the entire camera with the
stuff. I think that would be the first course of action if you are
moderately brave and nominally capable of detail work.

Somewhere out there is a guide to taking the shell off of the DS (I
think on some nutball site where he goes on to replace the IR filter
so he can use the DS for Astrophotography). I used it to fix my DS a
while ago.

I had a similar problem with the e-dial of my *ist DS, it seems a common
and easy to solve occurrence. I took the batteries out of the camera,
sprayed a bit of CRC contact cleaner on the wheel, turned left and right
a few times, and let the liquid evaporate (that contact cleaner doesn't
leave any residue). It solved the problem.

Sounds like the commutator in the jog wheel is getting dirty or worn.
That's repair time.

DS problems

The Jog wheel on my Ds seems to be getting flaky. When attempting to
stop down the aperture or increase shutter speed, (in other words
turning the wheel to the right), it doesn't always stop down, sometimes
it even opens up. Anyone else have this problem and know of a fix other
than sending it out for repair?

Here's something a friend pointed out to me, I don't know how true it is
with "modern" electronics,
but the Hoover dam used to kill electronic watches. Mechanical watches
were all right but not electronic.
It was "suggested" that you leave them at the top of the dam and not
take them on the tour. I wonder if
an electronic camera or for that matter an electro-mechanical camera
would have the same problem. I
guess I'll be keeping my H1a for photography in those conditions, just
in case, if there's still film for it that
is.

Maybe you can't do too much with them (I mean technological capability
of the body) but you know it'll work.
My 2 cents...

That sounds more like a solution than a problem.

During a war you get to drive tanks through the sides of buildings

I would like to know which setting turns off the AF. Perhaps linking AF to
AE?
Or perhaps "release while charging" set to OFF, or "release w/o CF" set to
ON ???
My advice: Find the three basic settings (1-2-3 for *ist D) which you never
change - like Normal-Hi Speed-Depth.
Set the main MENU to whatever you like - and don't change it ever.

More *ist-DS problems....

2005-01-09 Thread Fred Widall
Another problem has arisen with my *ist-DS.

This afternoon the autofocus stopped working for no apparent reason.
I tried using two other lenses to ensure that it was a problem
with the body and not the specific lens. None of the lenses would
autofocus.

I verified that the camera was indeed in autofocus mode. I also tried
a fresh set of batteries, just in case.

Looks like I need a replacement after all. I've emailed my contact
at Pentax Canada. I'll let the list know how they respond.
