As I told Bob, I got out my camera and macro 100 when I saw some nice
butterflies, but by the time I got the camera and got back outside, they
were gone. After a couple of hours of waiting for them to return, I took
this out of frustration and impatience, then laughed out loud when I
downloaded the card and saw it, saying (out loud) "Why the hell did I take
this?"

2016-07-10 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
You are of course correct on the first. I love the patterns in the shell.

As to the second, I was at our pool when some interesting butterflies
visited one of our butterfly bushes. I ran into the house to get the
camera a a macro lens, but when I returned, the butterflies were gone. I
sat there for another couple of hours, waiting for their return, but they
did not. I took Pattern 2 out of frustration, as I was sitting there with
the camera and the macro and nothing worthwhile to shoot.

Sasha, I really like the second one--nice exposure and composition, very moody
with the rain-spattered window and soft light.

The first seems good for what it is, but I don't care for the genre of scrawny

Both good, but the B&W one is the most impressive to me. I like the

I like them both. The second is more conventional, but very good. The first

If she's interested in theater, she doesn't necessarily need to have a
specific current role in mind to start building a portfolio showing her

I appears she had something in mind and spent quite some time preparing.

she looks strong in the first, vulnerable, even scared in the second;
both impressive as photographic craft, but my critique would be more
about what is conveyed:

the first looks more posed in expression, perhaps a little too tense,
and would be more interesting for me with a little of the vulnerability
(maybe not quite head on vantage point, or eyes not directly into camera)

in the second there is a conflict between her expression and the
slightly overwrought costume; i would consider reducing the illumination
below the shoulders, or even a less striking outfit to avoid distracting
from that vulnerability

of course if she's wanting that look of strength, you could pretty much
invert my suggestions, and maybe make a more active pose in the second,
though i doubt they'd be as compelling to me personally

Your daughter has a feel for high drama. These are really good. The
intimacy of the first seems to overpower the second but not really on
reflection. They're just different aspects of the same thing.

The second one is a good shot, but isn't nearly so powerful for me, though it's
better larger. You could try cropping the left side and the bottom just to the
left, and below, the visible so that her face isn't so much on the center line.

I like the first one - nice gradation of tones and the diffuse light

I'm going to buck the trend: I prefer the second. For some reason I
find it somewhat funny - it's as if that big gull is trying to "blend
in" with the other tiny birds, and not too successfully at that. I
also like the general composition, the curves and sandbars and all.

As Stan said, both seem a bit dark on my (uncalibrated) monitor, but
no oppressively so.

I just love the rendering and the light.

I have two photos I took recently and I would like to share:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/sobol/3687444641/in/set-72157620819148973/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/sobol/3687549847/in/set-72157620819148973/

The marmot was funny:
I hiked up the Half Dome and looked for shadow.
It was mid day and the only shadow I found was in the crack in the earth.
After I had a rest there for few minutes and got out I saw a marmot.
He was moving around in circles, worries by something.
In few minutes he calmed and occupied the crack :)

Double PESO

2009-07-06 Thread Sasha Sobol
I have two photos I took recently and I would like to share:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/sobol/3687444641/in/set-72157620819148973/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/sobol/3687549847/in/set-72157620819148973/

The marmot was funny:
I hiked up the Half Dome and looked for shadow.
It was mid day and the only shadow I found was in the crack in the earth.
After I had a rest there for few minutes and got out I saw a marmot.
He was moving around in circles, worries by something.
In few minutes he calmed and occupied the crack :)
