It's a little big, but that screen is really worth it. Yes, the screen is really good! I also like to be able to carry a (subset of) my gallery stuff with me, so I can alsway view it, or show to others. Being able to directly read CF and SD cards is great too. No seperate card-reader needed anymore. Video is also nice, but I have no real use for it yet. (Allthough my Optio W10 can create 640x480 video) I do like the MP3 capability, nice to have your favourite music with you, and 80Gb is a lot :-) However, for use with the DSLR (*istD) I did find a few drawbacks, no dealbreakers but still a bit of a dissapointment: - RAW images from the *istD (.PEF) are displayed OK, but since it simply takes the embedded JPG (640x480 ?), you CAN NOT ZOOM in on the image to see it in the resolution of the real image (6 megapixel). So no way to judge sharpness that way ... (This works fine with JPG's) - The slideshow feature does NOT work with RAW, only JPG But it is great to show my PUG and holliday galleries, with Mark Knopfler as background music :-) - It does not display 'progressive' JPG files. Not a problem for camera created ones, but JPG's from other sources may have been saved that way ... - I do find it a bit slow in populating the screen with thumbnails - It does NOT display long filenames, which can be a bit of a nuisance with MP3 music titles. (not a big deal though) I'd be happy to answer any questions about the device as I learn more about it. Are you shooting JPG mainly, or RAW ? I hope the upcoming K10D will support simultanious RAW+JPG mode, that would make reviewing on the P4000 easier. If the rumour about using DNG format with is true, I hope the P4000 will support that too (perhaps with a firmware update :-) Will test later if the understand the CS2 generated DNG's ... Overall, I am quite happy with the Epson! Regards, JvW -- Jan van Wijk; http://www.dfsee.com/gallery -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

Glad you like it, Amita. The Epson P2000/P4000 etc are very nice indeed. :-) Godfrey On Jul 19, 2006, at 6:43 PM, Amita Guha wrote: It arrived today! The screen is even better than I'd hoped. Epson P-4000 image tank
Does anyone here have any experience with the Epson P-4000 image tank or its predecessor? I think I might finally buy one. Right now I'm trying to figure out if the battery is removable. I'd love to hear from anyone who has it or has used one. Thanks, Amita -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

It's the best of the image tank stuff out there, IMHO- I've tried a couple of others. There are a lot of similar devices but this is the only one that I had consistent luck with 4 and 8GB cards and microdrives. And yes, the battery is removable, and some people are even field upgrading the disks. The screen is to die for. Lastly, these puppies vary greatly in price from vendor to vendor and there are rebates from time to time- spend the time to hunt for a deal if you're so inclined. -Ryan -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

How often do you recommend recharging the batteries? I am looking at taking it on a 2-week trip abroad, and both my husband and I will be using it, and maybe transferring about 3-4 GB to it daily. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

I should also say the Epson is built like a tank; feels very solid- again, in contrast with the other generic devices. -Ryan -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

From microdrives or something solid state? If the former, then after every 8gigs, the latter maybe 2x-4x that. You'll need to develop your own charging scheme based on your cards, time with LCD on, etc. Another option is to use it plugged in at the end of the day; the charger is a switching type which means it can run off of any power world-wide with just the appropriate mechanical adapter. -Ryan -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

Solid state, just 1 or 2Gb cards. Do you have an idea of how long it takes you to offload a microdrive? I realize the speed will be different for me, but I want to get an idea. Thanks for the dual voltage info; that's an added plus! Have you ever tried using an external charger for the battery, or do you just charge in the device? Microdrives don't seem to be much slower, but they take a lot more battery from what I can tell. Thanks for the dual voltage info; that's an added plus! Nope, I charge it inside the device... sometimes from the wall, sometimes from the car. -Ryan Amita -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net
Re: Epson P-4000 image tank
Amita, I've been using the P2000 since last year's UK trip. I transfer 1-2G SD cards and 1-2-4G CF cards with it. - It takes about 3 minutes or so to transfer a full 1G Sandisk Ultra II SD card. - I find that I get about 12-13 1G SD card transfers per charge. I've not done enough CF card transfers to know specifically for them. - I charge the Li-Ion battery in the unit, takes about 2.5 hours from completely flat to fully charged. So far, I haven't seen the need for a spare battery. It's an excellent storage unit. I've not had a single problem with it. It also allows me to present work with an overhead projector or television very easily using a standard Radio Shack CamCorder A/V cable (L-R audio, RGB composite inputs). Highly recommended.
