Re: FIlm transport in hand luggage

2009-01-13 Thread Luiz Felipe
The worst moment I had experienced so far I just forgot about a tiny
flashlight in my pocket. Was very late, and between the photo bag, my
name being called by the PA system and the damned metal detector beeping
I almost lost my temper. Did swear out loud in a foreign language when
the hand detector pinpointed the not so empty pocket and the dangerous
mini-torch. And the security did dismantle the flashlight just to make
sure the batteries were permitted items.

Some days we just do better staying in the bed. To get to the airport I
had a row with some rent a car crew about the difference between the
voucher and the final settlement of the bill (had to pay cash as they
said my creditcard refused - wich it did because they already had
charged the balance twice). To get to the airline counter I had to wait
for the idiot in front of me in the line, who would carry 6 bags in his
hand but couldn't lift one, then to board the airplane I had to come
back and describe in full detail the contents of my checked bag, which
displayed in the airport x-ray machine something that looked like 3 gun
barrels (my tripod), some knifes (one folding pocket, one small diving)
and a strange amount of books (9, sci-fi). Then I just forgot to take
out the dangerous flashlight...

And then had to show BR customs proof I had all that strange looking
cameras and lenses before I left the country - wich I did, serial number
after serial number after serial number. The gal was so disappointed she
was not getting me for smuggling a full bag of photo gear she did the
checklist twice. Then found the books, and tried hard to find where it
said I couldn't carry 9 books from the exterior without paying some tax,
or that sci-fi books in english were subversive and outlawed. I wonder
if I had a Playboy magazine...

Other day I asked for hand inspection of my films, heard they say yes
and handed them the ziplock. Wich they promptly received and dumped
trough the x-ray with impassive faces. I only received the films back to
test them - would leave as a present but tought better. No, I didn't
lose my temper, but my face wouldn't qualify as impassive.

I never travel with exposed, not developed film - carry my unexposed out
of the paper packs in a plastic bag (and often use Fuji, almost always
in clear plastic containers) but sometimes we just can't get it done
without some talking, and lately even talking seems ineffective. Thanks
for your views, folks - I'll carry TSA and Kodak printouts with me. And
maybe I go digital in 2009...

I can't speak for international air travel, but I traveled extensively in
the USA from 88 thru 05, a couple of hundred thousand miles a year, always
carried 6 to 12 rolls of 400 film (both carry on shipped below) never
had an issue with damage of exposed film due to security inspection devices.
Got to where I even had clothes specifically for air travel - no metal,
easily slipped off shoes, transparent bags for items that would require
inspection.

Yeah, isn't travel wonderful !

Air travel certainly has gone down hill in the last 20 years!

It's been about 5 years since I traveled w/film. Usually had no trouble
with hand checking - Take the film out of the boxes and put all the
rolls together in a clear ziplok bag and politely ask for hand checking.
I'd usually throw a roll or two of the highest ISO I could find as a
reason for not running it through the x-ray.

Here is guidance from the TSA (the agency in charge of airport security):

http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/assistant/editorial_1035.shtm

It sounds like you can still request a hand inspection, and in certain
cases (ISO of 800 or higher, push processing, more than 5 screenings)
they say you SHOULD request a hand inspection.

Printing this web page and carrying it with you can't hurt (and I like
the idea of throwing some T-Max P3200 in the bag, just in case).

The worst thing to do is to pack film in your checked bags, as they
randomly pass through a much more powerful X-Ray machine. They'll up

Bad.

All previous advice here is good.

Right after 9/11 I asked for hand inspection of my Velvia 50 slide film
(I used the term professional when asking but don't think they cared
either way). I had it at the top of my camera bag in a zip-lock bag to
make it easy to pull out and ask. They were more than happy to
accommodate my request.

Re: FIlm transport in hand luggage

2009-01-12 Thread Igor Roshchin

I second this advice. Have that printout handy.
Also, it usually helps mentioning professional:
Would you please do a hand check on the professional high-sensitivity
film?
You can also insist that this professional film will be developed at
higher ISO (they may not know the term push).

While I haven't done this in the last ~5 years or so, - the practice
at different airports varied: in some, they wouldn't bother checking
the rolls with the paper boxes being intact while only check the loose
canisters, - in some - on opposite -
they would open all the sealed boxes but wouldn't look inside loose
canisters.
According to TSA's page, - now they prefer the film to be out of
canisters (but in reality it still may vary), - in plastic ziplock bags.

The nastiest resistance to the hand-check that I ever experienced
was in Moscow (Sheremetyevo Airport) and in Zurich - back in 2000.
In Moscow - the airline representative was called and helped me out.
Nothing helped in Zurich (b..tards!).

single event.

But I wonder if this is still possible in the US - my latest experience
there came fairly ok in may, '01. Still have a small film shield, but
lately I just carry my 6pack of Fuji as I walk under the metal detector
and ask it to be hand checked.

I can travel without film if needed, but would rather have some with me
all the time. Still remember the most suspicious way some security party
regarded my gossen lightmeter once...

Comments? Ideas? Thanks!!

Re: FIlm transport in hand luggage

2009-01-12 Thread Bob Sullivan
Reminds me of the time (pre TSA) when boarding a flight in the US
southwest and the guy in front of me was wearing a cowboy hat, boots,
and a 5 inch belt knife in a nice buckskin scabbard. I thought 'What
the hell?' but nobody said a word, just commonplace to carry your pig
sticker with you. Regards, Bob S.

I'm continually amazed at what these people think is dangerous. When I was
flying a lot, I would often carry a kit that included a Vivitar S1 90-180mm
flat field lens, about as long a my forearm and weighing about 4 pounds. I
think I could have beaten someone to death with it and still used it to
photograph the blood splatters. TSA and their predecessors would take off
both caps, look through it and let it pass, but they confiscated my 1 inch
blade pocket knife the time I forgot to take it off the key ring...

Well, seems almost certain a trip of yours trully around part of the US
between april and may '09. Here in Brasil I don't have much trouble with
hand inspection of my films - only lost six unexposed rolls so far, in a
single event.

But I wonder if this is still possible in the US - my latest experience

2009-01-12 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I refuse to fly with film anymore. Too many chances for it to be
ruined. If I needed to shoot film somewhere I had to fly to, I'd ship
it ahead via courier. I shoot at that location and have the film
processed there, I don't take the exposed film back through security
either.
