How do I discover if there's a problem - by shooting a bright frame into the light/sky, or...? Regards Jens Jens, as a recent K-5 acquirer I can tell you this: 1. You can open a file from your K-5 in PhotoMe. If the camera production date is after late Dec 2010 - you are most likely fine. They fixed the problem thence. 2. You can mount your longer lens (I did it with Sigma 24-60 at 60 mm, but longer may be better) and take a series of shots at infinity with +1 Ev exposure comp of a blue sky or something that is uniformly well lit. Then you can examine the files. Also you can look here: http://enticingthelight.com/2010/12/01/review-pentax-k-5/#stains or on Pentax Forums. Re: FW: I miss my K5!!!!
Hi List Members I just recently heard of the problem with the K-5 sensor stains. What a shame! Pentax launches a truely great new camera - with an exceptionally great sensor, that offers very low noice at relativly high ISO settings. And then the big draw back appeared - the sensors have stains! Arrghhh!! I just ordered one from Germany (FotoKoch). It will probably arrive on Saturday or Monday. I really want this camera, 'cause I just hate using a flash outside the studio. And the K-7 had just too much noice (sold mine already). But what about the stains I hope my K-5 deosn't show this disease... Is it over - or still a major problem? How do I discover if there's a problem - by shooting a bright frame into the light/sky, or...? Regards Jens -- Treat others as you would like to be treated yourself. Re: FW: I miss my K5!!!!
I think it was earlier models , not sure if the newer ones have the same problem. Its what happens when their QC, us, takes to long to find these things out. How do I discover if there's a problem - by shooting a bright frame into the light/sky, or...? Regards Jens If you believe the more excitable member at the Pentax Forum, you would think that half the cameras made were sensor stained, and that Pentax deliberately and maliciously sent them out that way. If you believe Pentax (I tend to), then the problem affected a somewhat smaller %, certainly less than 5% of the very first run of cameras. By now it should be over either way. Check the EXIF for the manufacturing date. Any cameras produced after (I believe) mid December should be unaffected, and even camera made prior are unlikely to be affected. The surest way to check, from what I've read is to run the camera in LiveView for half an hour or so to well and truely heat up the sensor, then give it an equal amount of time to cool down. Point the camera at an evenly lit surface (or the sky). If the surface is very near, focus at infinity, if using the sky, focus at closest distance to ensure an out of focus image. Set the aperture to minimum and take a picture, making sure that there is enough exposure to make a white image. If you have sensor stains, you will see (at 100%) what appears to be black donuts with a black spot in the center. Note, the stains will generally not be visible until you stop down smaller than f/11. Here's what Pentax had to say about it: http://support.pentaximaging.com/node/1214 BTW, if you believe the ninnies at the Pentax Forum, you may be led to believe that the K5 is virtually an unworking camera because it has so many issues. And then the big draw back appeared - the sensors have stains! Arrghhh!! How do I discover if there's a problem - by shooting a bright frame into the light/sky, or...? Regards Jens Hmm, I have the stains and I am seriously considering NOT taking the camera to be repaired/exchanged. I can see them with the longer lenses closed down to f/11 or more when focused to infinity and pointed at a fairly close uniform thing like a wall. They cannot be seen even with a 200mm lens at f/4 and very faintly at f/5.6 - would be a problem only if I shot .. you guessed .. that same wall. As I am generally not into shooting walls I don't think this will affect me much. Let's take an 18mm lens at f/8 .. I KNOW the stains are there but I also know that noone will be able to see and identify them even on a uniform background. Here is an unedited 10MB (beware) file http://flow.ri-ki.lv/snaps/IMGR0469.JPG Here is a small version for those not really interested in the stains: http://flow.ri-ki.lv/snaps/IMGR0469A.JPG Knowing where those stains are located I can find one (hint they are on the sky - the nice uniform real-life background) and even then only at great magnifications and as a faint shadow. YMMV, I tested by using a 200mm lens at f/22, setting exposure correction to +1, ISO80, uniform 18% gray wall.. sky, ceiling, anything works and your exposure doesn't have to be steady, can even take a really long time - those stains are not going anywhere. If you have them you will be able to see them already in camera at higher magnifications. kris -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
