I have found the solution now.
I had to flash it twice with Firmware 1.11. First it updates from V 1.0 to
1.10 and then to 1.11 with the same binary file.
You can't directly update Version 1.0 to 1.11.

My K10D shows 1.11 now as well.

I think that this might be an acceptable loss given the smooth
operation. Also, I never notice the viewfinder as being particularly
dark. OTOH, that was a f2-2.4 zoom.

Apart from the loss of speed (which was a real drag as it limited the
effective
ISO to 80) the type of sensor used in the *ist D and other similar
cameras
requires dark to calibrate and desaturate but it offers better noise
performance and faster response. The Oly E-10 is a great camera though,
it's
the ultimate stealth SLR as the only noise it makes is from the action
of the
aperture blades :-)

2004-09-02 Thread Peter J. Alling
You are splitting the light sending some to the viewfinder and some to
the sensor, you lose between 1/3 to a full
stop in exposure, and have a rather dim viewfinder. (I'm not sure about
what effect light leaking through the viewfinder
might have on the exposure as well but it probably isn't good).

I guess you're right Cotty.
I still think there's a better quality "feel" to the MZ-S (pure
mechanical
(magnesium) quality, though: No (or few) "MENU"'s - just real buttons
that
can be "read" quickly (at a glance) from a distance). Had Pentax made
the
MZ-D, it would have been VERY NICE - but unfortunately also VERY
expensive
(10.000 USD). I would probably never have gotten one of these, anyway.

But the 'ist i DIGITAL: No time waisted on scanning negs or cloning
out dust
or scratches. No money for folm and development. No bad developments
or bad
film or wrong ISO or colour temperature. Just lots of nice
photographs in
seconds. This was made for me and others who wants to shoot loads and
just
keep the good shots.

I used to say: The secret behind good photographs (and proffesional
photographing) is:
Simply throw away the bad ones! (Meaning: Shoot loads, just keep the
best
and you ar getting there!)
This procedure is now available to me too!

James.
I will probably be putting it up for auction (ebay) during the next couple
of days. It's sad to let it go ('cause it's SO beautiful and has suchj a
nice feel to it - and it's actually a very well built and well designed
camera), but it's better that it is serving some one else, than just sitting
on a shelf, while I'm using other cameras (* ist D or 6x6). I have paid 1050
USD (like new) for it in february (including the battery grip), but I will
probably get someting like 650 USD at ebay. Ther eye cup is missing, but now
it comes with a cable release (Rob's). Please feel free to make me an offer
off list (anyone), if you are interested in owning this magnificent camera -
the last pro Pentax for 35mm film, I believe.

I use K and M lenses quite often. You will get used to pushing the
green button. It becomes an automatic process. No hassle whatsoever.
For all important shots I use my K primes: the 24 and 28 3.5s, the
50/1.4, the 85/1.8, and the 135/2.5. I also use my A 400/5.6 and M
200/4 quite frequently. I have two zooms, an FA 28-105 and a Sigma
17-35. I use them quite often but more for walkarounds and casual

I guess you're right Cotty.
I still think there's a better quality "feel" to the MZ-S (pure mechanical
(magnesium) quality, though: No (or few) "MENU"'s - just real buttons that
can be "read" quickly (at a glance) from a distance). Had Pentax made the
MZ-D, it would have been VERY NICE - but unfortunately also VERY expensive
(10.000 USD). I would probably never have gotten one of these, anyway.
But the 'ist i DIGITAL: No time waisted on scanning negs or cloning out
dust
or scratches. No money for folm and development. No bad developments or
bad
film or wrong ISO or colour temperature. Just lots of nice photographs in
seconds. This was made for me and others who wants to shoot loads and just
keep the good shots.

I used to say: The secret behind good photographs (and proffesional
photographing) is:
Simply throw away the bad ones! (Meaning: Shoot loads, just keep the best
and you ar getting there!)
This procedure is now available to me too!
All the best

Not Paul but I will do it but I'm not used to it (I think the Green button is
in a pig of a spot), I'd much prefer the traditional aperture ring control and
direct metering (I'm still regularly confused as to which way to spin the thumb
wheel when in "A" modes, especially when shooting landscape).

It's a difficult decision but after I purchased my *ist D all I did was look at
my MZ-S and think what lovely camera it was, I never actually used it. I figure
that the *ist D offers as much automation (if not more) than the MZ-S and so I
elected to keep my more traditional (and cheaper) manual bodies. The Exakta
wouldn't return you too much cash I guess, wait a while and see if the *ist D
will provide you with all you need then decide which to sell. There are some
things that 35mm film will do slightly better than the *ist D but the 67 (or
6x6 in your case) does a whole lot better such as detailed landscapes.

What I meant by "it is like shooting with a Spotmatic" is that you
take a meter reading in a seperate step from the rest of preparing for
a shot. On a Spotmatic you turn on the meter which stops down the
lens and then you do needle matching. On the *ist D you press the
green button which stops down the lens and picks a shutter speed for
you.

With my M100/4.0, when pressing the green button while in manual, the
shutter speed is set for the proper exposure at the f stop you have
selected. It's not like shooting with a Spotmatic.

It only works in the M position. There is really no meaningful way for it
to work in any other position.

In Tv the camera can't adjust the aperture, so I don't know what it
would do.

It isn't true Av because it only meters while stopped down and not
continuously.

I guess they could have made it work this way, but I don't think that it
would be much better:
* In Av pressing the green button sets the shutter speed to have the
right exposure. Exposure compensation is used to adjust it. This is
how M works now.
* In M the green button updates the meter reading, but doesn't change
the shutter speed. This would be really annoying to use. You would
press the green button, see that it was off by a few stops, adjust
the shutter or aperture to compensate, then press the green button
again. Maybe it would be right, maybe the light changed a bit and now
it is half a stop off. Repeat.

K/M lenses only work in M mode. It is like shooting with a Spotmatic
all over again. I like it.

1.11 is working for me with manual, the green button, and K lenses. I
noticed in Custom Functions that I was asked to choose between P, TV,
and AV when using Manual. I don't recall seeing that before. I also
checked to make sure that I was still set up for "a stop other than A."
(I was that didn't change.) I selected AV by the way, and the camera
works fine.

presumably you can easily go back?

Well mine certainly doesn't any longer, it's supposed to according
to the
accompanying blurb. Green button does jack ... now.
Is it possible to go back to version 1.1, or are you stuck
with it now? I haven't made the switch to 1.11, and won't if
it costs non A series operation.

OK mine works, I forgot that it only works in the "M" position (or did I?), my
apologies.

Same here. Hope they correct it with 1.12.

2004-03-17 Thread Rob Brigham
Looking on dpreview there are at least 2 people reporting 1.11 still
working with non-A lenses. Nobody else is reporting a problem. Perhaps
try re-installing the firmware? Sounds a bit strange, and would
certainly make me pause for thought if I used old lenses - but
presumably you can easily go back?

I suspect so. I was just checking the pdf of the latest *ist D brochure to see
if the new "backwards compatibility" rates a mention, doesn't seem so. However
in the 4 page brochure it does state quite clearly in a large table that the
camera can miraculously squeeze many more large images than small per KB of
storage space. Makes me wonder.

I think I can safely say no. Based on my experience they don't. The K
mount fix will be back in in
version 1.2 but then they'll lose something else...

And don't expect to be able to use lenses off the "A" position any longer.
Doesn't anyone test these things :-(
