1. Grapes. 2. ? Probably the meerkat, except for the bokah. Of the other three, the butterfly is too tight a shot for my taste, the hummingbird shot is nice but has those distracting wires, and the branch is one of those macro shots that are so tight that you can't tell what you are looking at without a caption. stan On Jan 12, 2009, at 11:52 PM, John Celio wrote: Five finalists: http://www.neovenator.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=1062 Took forever to narrow it down this much. Thanks for the feedback so far everyone! You're all immensely helpful. > Grapes needs to be sharper(?) and there seems to be something wrong > with the tone gradations, it looks almost posterized, but I have to > assume you didn't intend that. The grapes are really sharp when viewed larger. Also, these photos are compressed (using PS's Save For Web function) enough to make them load quickly for web viewers, so that may be part of the problem. The gradations you see could be because the grapes were underwater (in a centerpiece, to be precise). Grape skins seem to do that when they're submerged. Maybe there's some sort of waxy coating on them? I don't know. > Finally did you know I hate you? I'm honored! Re: GESO: Can't Decide (book choices)
Frankly, I found a shot on your smugmug page that I like a lot better than any of these - and it's unusual cause I'm not a big fan of cute little kid shots :-) - it is this one: http://www.neovenator.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=847 sweet expression and good all around technically/geometrically. If I have to pick from these : Meercat by a mile for me - He has heart.. BUT I'd crop about h well if this were a 6 inch tall shot, about 1 inch off the top.. too much space above his head distracts. . 2nd Humming bird - but black and white would be fine for this, since you mention struggling with the sepia.. the humming bird has the most interesting "geometry" but there are little specs of stuff around that I'd want to get rid of. (note bottom left bar) The grapes bother me because they look like well, green maggots... looks like they are in a glass.. but it is a well done photo technically... do you have more space around the glass? so that you see it is a glass holding grapes? The closeup of the branch is in last place for me -- The butterfly is next to last -- I can't quite explain why.. a bit too fussy . Yeah - it is really hard to chose from recently done stuff... Hope this helps and sorry it is late... Re: GESO: Can't Decide (book choices)
All are very interesting, all are at least a little flawed. That said, I'm very impressed. While the DOF isn't really sufficient on butterfly, and as someone else remarked that the wing on the hummingbird is almost covering it's eye I'd go with those two, the compositions easily overcome the nits. Meerkat is the most conventional image and that really allows it's flaws to show. Branch is also pretty conventional, though the best executed, almost perfect use of DOF, and beautifully lit. Grapes needs to be sharper(?) and there seems to be something wrong with the tone gradations, it looks almost posterized, but I have to assume you didn't intend that.
