GESO: From The Cordon

2011-04-23 Thread David Mann
Hi all,

We took a 4-hour walk around the CBD cordon today. I didn't actually realise
we were going to go all the way around, otherwise I'd have brought my own
camera. Janet had her point & shoot so she took a whole lot of photos on the
way around. I took a few where she wanted to reach over the fence.

I'm playing with jAlbum now to save effort and I haven't played too much with
its different skins... you can click on any photo to see the full version.

Seeing some of this stuff was quite sobering, especially the CTV site. After
this walk I really believe them when they say it's going to take months just to
reopen the area to the public. I can't even begin to think of the scale of the
cleanup in Japan.

Cheers,
Dave

it all looks rather post-apocalyptic. I'd like to see that. In many ways it
also reminds me of UK inner-cities during the slum clearances of the
60s-80s.

That's how I felt about it. The sound of blinds batting around in the breeze
brought it home. Being a holiday weekend the Civil Defence and demolition
workers were away and the only people about were police and army personnel
keeping an eye on the cordons. The normally bustling city was silent.

It's quite surreal to see buildings that look OK at first glance but then you
see there's something not quite right. One fairly big one I saw is on a slight
lean, another couple I noticed looked as if they'd twisted. We saw a number of
empty lots and piles of rubble from demolished or collapsed buildings. And as
you can see from the photos, there are many more that will need to come down.

I'm trying not to get sentimental about it because we have to pick up and move
on. It's the heritage buildings I'll miss the most. Some may be rebuilt but
only if it can be done safely.

build a new heritage. Think about other places which have rebuilt completely
- London after the great fire, Paris under Napoleon III, Berlin, Dresden,
London again, Coventry, Saint-Malo etc.

No, on second thoughts, don't do Coventry. But there's no shortage of good
models.

Yes, I think that's been mentioned by those in charge, and it's certainly
something I've thought of earlier. Definitely an opportunity. But to be
honest I doubt it'll happen. The focus will be on fast and cheap.

I'm not sure how it's going to play out though. Rebuilding the CBD is
secondary to getting people back into habitable homes, so once the demolitions
have finished and the remaining buildings have been made safe, the place is
likely to look a bit empty for a while.

By the time the CBD is rebuilt, the businesses that were there will have built
up a new customer base in the suburbs and another move could be too disruptive.
And a lot of people are going to think twice about working in a high-rise
again. So new businesses will move in, and I wouldn't be surprised if they
focus on building some more inner-city apartments.

There is already concern that the recovery authority has been granted way too
much power. It's going to be very interesting to say the least.

Cheers,
Dave

if they offer temporary accommodation, make sure people get a clear
definition of temporary:

I think I saw a video about that on the BBC website a while ago.

There will be temporary "villages" (I wonder if that's a code word). There was
talk of campervans but with the rugby world cup coming up I'm not sure whether
they're going ahead with that.
