I think they're the same. Pentax standardized lens accessory threads to 49mm, 58mm, etc. in the later screwmount years. The SMC Tak 85/1.8 may have required more than 49mm, hence the 58mm filter size. When the K mount came out, the body mount was of a larger diameter than the screwmount lenses, and a correspondingly larger 52mm filter thread was adopted as minimum size. This apparently was large enough for the K 85/1.8. The 49mm filter was adopted once again (alongside 52mm where needed) with the introduction of the M series lenses. Hmmm, that makes me wonder if the SMC Tak 85/1.8 and the K 85/1.8 are, in fact, optically identical. Perhaps there's must more of a front element retainer ring on the earlier lens. I noticed in the picture of that Nikon hood that it's wider, and since it's 52 mm, I'll have to pick one up. I covet the 600/4 and the K 15/3.5 rectilinear. The latter is very rare in SMC Tak version. I'm not sure how common it is as a K. It's certainly expensive, as is the 600/4. Re: Got a Bargain, I think, an 85/1.8
My SMC Tak 85/1.8, which I think is identical save for the mount, works well with the metal hood for the old Super Tak 85/1.9. Although it's not quite as substantial as that Nikon hood, it does say Pentax :-) I just bought a K 85/1.8 as part of a package. (MX, MX winder, 40/2.8 and 85/1.8) for $420. The seller was camera illiterate, and I didn't have time to inquire about condition. Should arrive here Monday. I'm keeping my finger's crossed. Up to US$400 in mint condition. Some get bargains for less. A few have paid more. I'm not very good at assessing the effect of "a bit of brasing" on price. The lens is excellent glass. Hi Paul ... Good find, great price. I've seen these lenses in excellent condition go for as much as $600.00 on eBay, although I think they are worth a bit less than that. Last year I bought and sold a damaged lens for $350.00. IAC, you did well - it's not a cheap lens. Finding an original hood for this lens is, IMO, a waste of time. It takes a clip-on plastic hood which is easily knocked off. I use an old Nikon HN-7 for this puppy. It's a perfect fit, it's metal, it screws on, and it can be found more easily and for less money than an original Pentax hood. An added advantage is that it's a better hood for Pentax 50mm lenses than the standard Pentax hoods for that focal length. It'll require a step-up ring, but that's cheap and easy to come by. This scheme also allows the use of one size filter for the 85mm and the 50mm lenses.
