I'll bet that there are going to be more than a couple of Pentaxers
who found it a ~LOT~ more than merely "pretty interesting", and were
hoping to be able to finally get their hands on one of these at a
less-than-exorbitant price. (I personally know of a couple of
PDML-ers who've been in the hunt for one of these for at least a
couple of years.) But, here we've "leveled the playing field" - now
those who never spend time searching for Pentax bargains will have
the exact same chance as those PDML-ers who invest a lot of their
time trying to glean Pentax gold out of the eBay rubble.

Ah well, at least the seller would be happy...

Quite true, Rob. However, if I were interested in bidding on a
auction item, I would want as few others to know about it as
possible. The more that know, the more that bid, and the more the
price goes up.

Fred,

Sometimes I think that people announce these ebay finds just to
make sure nobody gets them cheap. I think they enjoy being
spoilers. In a group this large, you can be sure some are doing
it just for that reason. Perhaps they already have the same
item and just can't stand the thought of someone else getting
one for less than they paid.

Re: Guess what I found...

2002-04-27 Thread Mishka

C'mon!
It's not an exactly "hidden gen" on the ebay -- *anyone * searching for
100mm Pentax macro would find it immediately.
As for "hunting for a couple of years" -- pardon me, but from the simple
common sense, that's 700+ days, and if you value your time at least $1/day,
the one on kevincamera.com for $700 should look like a bargain. Stop wasting
your time and get it. Saving a couple of hundreds at best by wasting *that
much* time is ridiculous (or were you hoping that the reserve there is
$100?).

Of course we forgive you. I for one was not in the least bit angry about
any of this ebay messaging, but I did think it was worthwhile to point
out the downside. We all used to do it. We saw the consequences and stopped.

Indeed, PDMLers will recall a similar thread a few months ago that
persuaded me to stop announcing such EBay finds.

So let me say it once: Folks, if you want to find a hidden gem, look for it
in the "wrong" category. When searching for a term--such as "PKA" or
""Pentax macro"--search at the top level (Photo).
