Actually I use the FA 50mm f/1.7. The AF is indeed snappy (even if not
as fast as other cameras), but in some conditions (insufficient light,
low contrast subjects) it becomes quite slow. Is not something
unexpected, but I hope the next model(s) will be better.

I have a Sandisk Ultra II card (1GB), it should be more than enough
for this camera. I think the ~1fps in jpeg mode (after the buffer
fills) will be enough for me, so I guess I'm not used with a camera
which slows down after few frames (my film cameras certainly didn't).
Most of the time I'll be able to use raw without an issue.

I am familiar with Pentax cameras, so I don't have any problem using
my DS. As you said, I'll just have to get used with it. Actually I
think Pentax did a great job putting all those controls in such a
small body, and if the body is thick - well, it's not like they had a
choice.

I don't have a card reader (yet). Difficult to use means that you must
use some force when inserting/removing the cable, and the flash... it
just seems weaker than other parts. No real complaint here, the
competitors aren't better.
Btw I've played a little with Pentax Remote Assistant. Nice tool, even
if not all functions seems to work (well, the program lines and the
green buttons shouldn't work anyway). Why no official support for the
DS?

For sure. Please don't take my (previous) post as a negative "review",
I really like the camera. I would like to see those issues solved in
future products, and after a while I may want to upgrade to a faster
camera - but until then I'm sure I'll enjoy the DS.
If I were to give it a rating, that would be Highly recommended.

Yes, that's true. AF in Pentax DSLRs needs a lot of light :-( In good light
it is as good as most cameras in its class. In low light it is much faster
to focus manually, that's why it has such a good viewfinder after all ;-)

There was more added than just support for larger cards. There was also an

I compared the *istDS to the closest-priced Nikon DSLR model, an Olympus

Re: Guess what I have on my desk?

2005-10-25 Thread Alexandru-Cristian Sarbu
Ok, thank you all who responded. I've already updated the firmware
(using the provided CR-V3 batts) and everything worked just fine.
Actually the update wasn't that important, as my (only) SD card has
1GB - which is supported from the version 1.00 and if I'll add another
1GB card and a mass storage device I won't need anything else.

Even if I work in IT, I've done a firmware update only 3 times: once
for a combo (DVD+CD-Writer) unit and two BIOS upgrades. One upgrade
failed (wrong version, I guess), so I know what's like when you make a
working device (be it a computer or a camera) inoperative. Not a
pleasant feeling.

Now a few words about the camera (just a quick impression, many of you
knows it better than me).

First, the camera is slow. And I'm talking mainly about the AF, which
- if you don't have a well-lit, contrasty subject - takes some time to
lock in. When shooting in raw mode also the writing speed could be a
big issue, after the buffer fills you'll have to wait for several
seconds to be able to take the next picture. Well, one could lower the
jpeg resolution to 4MP in order to gain some extra frames but... if
you have to do this perhaps this is the wrong camera for you.

Ergonomy. Now that's supposed to be the strong point of a Pentax
camera. Well... I'll actually have to accommodate with the DS,
searching for a good grip - and the buttons aren't that easy to
find/use. I was more comfortable with my MZ-6, but the DS - for me at
least - works better without a battery grip. Which doesn't exists
anyway.
Since is my first digital camera (and I more or less hated all the
other digital cameras I've tried) I'm sure we'll get along just fine.

Construction. Plastic from the outside, but quite well put together; I
guess the metal subframe helps alot. The buttons&wheel are not too bad
but not too good either. I would worry more about water&dust sealing
than the camera breaking in my hands. The SD slot and the IO ports
cover are OK, the PC port however is difficult to use. The flash may
be a weak point.
In a word, adequate (I won't say that about many well-regarded cameras
and I ignored the price and it's class).

The viewfinder is good, better I would say than that on my MZ-6 (I
left the film cameras home so I can't compare them). Unfortunately I
also have a ME Super, and that keeps me from calling the viewfinder
"great".

So: am I glad I've made this step? Yes, I am (actually I was quite
well-informed about the camera's capabilities, and I "played" with one
before taking this decision). I think the DS could be considered the
digital, improved version of my MZ-6 (and that's a camera I liked a
lot, except for it's viewfinder). It's somehow slow but I don't think
that will be a problem (in some occasions I may have to use jpegs and
not raws). It's not perfect but neither are it's competitors. And I
wasn't willing to trade the viewfinder for gimmicks like IS, USM,
sonic waves or other sci-fi tech.

Now it's me and my "skills" which should be improved.

Alex Sarbu (which must learn how to use his new photographic tool -
mind you, it's not a toy like you-know-which-brand cameras )

Congrats, Alexz. I'm sure you make a lot of intersesting photographs fwith

The firmware user guide says so.
AFAIR you doenload the firmware to your PC, unpack it and then copy ot to
the root of the SD card. Then you istall it, by doing something to the
camera.

It' is however important, that the camera don't shut down due to lack of
power while istalling the firmware.
You dont need the AC adapater. r

Pentax has released two firmware updates for the *ist DS. You can
tell what's installed on your camera currently by holding down the

Well, my *istDS certainly isn't female. My DS has always been logical and
easy to understand, predictable, reliable, very cooperative, doesn't take

Just a fully charged set of batteries will do. (The update takes a few
seconds at most). You're more likely to have a power failure using the

took advantage from my Munchen trip and I've ordered the camera from
mediaonline.de. "Nachname" rulz :)
I've put the FA 50mm f/1.7 on it, an 1GB Sandisk SD card, and she
(btw. are Pentax cameras female?) is ready to go. Now if I only had
time to take some pictures :(

I'll need some time to get used with the camera (it's my first digital
camera), but for now it seems OK (I'll do more tests this evening,
just in case). One thing I've noticed is the firmware version: 1.00.
If I want to update it I'll need the AC adapter, right?

I did the update on rechargeable batteries. No problem.
Enjoy.

I'm sure you'll enjoy using it.

No, just a fresh set of CRV3 or freshly charged set of NiMH
batteries. I have done all the firmware updates on both bodies and
don't own the AC power supply yet.

I think freshly charged NiMH accus, or CR-V3 batteries will be enough.

well, an *istDS of course!

I don't like to buy online, and for sure I like to buy from our (the
