Re: HAPPY NEW YEAR

2023-12-30 Thread Alan C
It looks fine on mine. Shot at 8:35am on the W bank of the dam on a
overcast morning with lens at full stretch. Don't see any
yellowish/greenish (apart from the background which is sharply in
contrast to the Stork).

That's a nice shot, but on my screen the color balance seems wonky. Did you
shoot it at sunset? It looks very yellowish, maybe even a bit greenish as well.

Interesting thought. I wonder how long a 200 year old would want (or be
expected) to work or otherwise contribute to society? And how much of their
life could reasonably be allotted to the nebulous concept of retirement?

Aha! Thanks a bunch, that’s it. I did notice that the knob could push in, but
didn’t jiggle it properly at the time.

I notice a lot opportunity, had they made the mechanism a bit larger they could
have made it arca swiss compatible.

LBA, GAS, happy black Friday to me

2022-11-30 Thread Larry Colen
I mentioned the black Friday deals at KEH and B&H. I was able to resist the
K-3 III temptation, but succumbed to the DFA* 70-200/2.8 for $900 (with hood
and caps). It arrived today. It is noticably larger than the 80-200 that John
has so graciously loaned me for the past few years. It is also weather sealed,
focuses silently, has quick shift focusing, and selectable focus ranges.

It did not, however, come with a manual. I was able to read about the focus
switch on the Ricoh website:
https://www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/english/products/lens/k/telephoto/hdpentax-dfa-70-200/

However it isn’t entirely clear how to remove the tripod foot. I twisted the
“lock” knob but can only get the foot to wiggle, not come off. I may be
insufficiently forceful, but I’ve broken things before by being more than
sufficiently forceful.

I tried to find a manual for it on the Ricoh site, but no luck. Can anyone
point me to one I can read?

and less significant, especially as women consistently outlive men (and Ann
has outlived a few).

Re: Happy Valentines Day!

2021-02-15 Thread Ken Waller
FWIW, I wouldn’t send anything but the body, well wrapped, first in a ziplock
bag surrounded by your packaging material. They’ll have batteries and memory
cards on hand.
You need to visit their web site, they’ll give you a preliminary estimate. Then
down load their shipping label and get their assigned work order number.

Don’t know how long it will take now but in the past they were quick on my
stuff.

They mostly suck, but seem to succeed in repairing equipment.
When I got thrown into the water with my 15-30 and it would no longer
autofocus, it was sent back as unrepairable, I wasn’t charged, but it was
working.
It’s almost as if someone realized it was just a loose connection and ticked
the unrepairable box so I wouldn’t get charged $300.

When the shutter on my K-1 crapped out last summer, it was gone for like 2
months, waiting on parts, but that could be a pandemic issue.

Nope, just put a body cap on it, and pack it well.

I use searchtempest to search both craigslist and ebay

https://www.searchtempest.com/search?search_string=pentax%20k-1&category=8&subcat=sss&cityselect=zip&location=95018&maxDist=5&Region=combined#gsc.tab=0

There’s on on ebay with a buy it now of $1100

There are a fair number of completed listings on ebay for under $1100

Although there is a K1 listed but shows a photo of a K30

Re: Happy Valentines Day!

2021-02-15 Thread John
I don't see any damage to the lens or the lens mount. I have three of the four
legs pulled loose. I don't know how I did that, but ...

I expect I'll be sending mine to precison in the next couple of days. I'd like
some feedback from the list.

I still have the original Ricoh Pentax K-1 box. I'm thinking of packing the
camera in that, along with a single battery and then packing that box inside of
a shipping box, but before I do ...

Mainly I want to know whether I'll get the Ricoh Pentax K-1 box and the battery
back if I send it in that way? Should I include a memory card? I have a spare
256MB card that I won't be devastated if I lose it.

What's y'all's experience with their turn-around?

I checked with my local Pentax guy & he is no longer stocking Pentax (although I
think he can still order from them - he's just not carrying it in stock) I was
thinking maybe picking up a used K-1 for backup if he had one, but all he had
were a K-5 & a K-7.

KEH currently has the K-1 listed as "Out of Stock". They don't have ANY Pentax
digital cameras right now.

Ebay don't look pretty right now either, so it looks like my only option in that
direction (having a spare) is a new one from B&H.

Have you tried to get it from the VA? You're a Vietnam Vet, you should be
eligible even if you don't get your primary care from the VA.

I'm in the third cohort & you're older than I am. You would be in the second.

1st cohort - Care providers working at the VA hospital and clinics plus Veterans
in the nursing home wing of the hospital.

2nd cohort - Veterans 75+, Veterans with co-morbidities and any remaining
members of the 1st cohort.

3rd cohort - Veterans 65+ and any remaining members of 1st & 2nd cohorts.

4th cohort - Younger veterans & pushing out to the community based Clinics, plus
remaining members of 1st, 2nd & 3rd cohorts.

I think they're also beginning to vaccinate dependents & family care givers.

They told me that by April they expect to have ALL veterans AND dependents
vaccinated.

OUCH!

Of course, the most important thing is that you were not injured. Be
thankful for small blessings.

A few hours ago, I slipped on the ice while walking my dog, and fell to my
hands and knees. I wasn't hurt, but embarrassed, as it happened in front
of a neighbor. To make matters worse, my damned Apple watch said "I notice
you took a hard fall. Are you alright?" and I had to answer it. I also
dropped the dog leash, but Bandit obeyed when I commanded him to "stand,
stay."

Stay safe, John!

I suspect that the most straightforward solution is to ship it off to Precision
and pay their price. If you could find a dead K-1, you might be able to
salvage it for parts.

Alternatively, I don’t know how far prices on used K-1s have fallen.

In any case, I’m glad that the physical damage was confined to the camera.

It's Sunday, so I'm just not going to worry about it until Monday. That includes
trying to figure out where to send it for repair.

What I'll probably do is take it down to the local Pentax Dealer and have them
send it off to be repaired. May cost me a bit extra, but I like having a local
Pentax Dealer & probably should do my bit to keep them in business.

I did take a look at KEH, and they don't have a used K-1 (or K-1 II) in stock.

I still have my K-3, K20D & K10D (and if I get desparate, I can dig out the
*ist-D).

I should also mention it doesn't appear to have hurt the little dog either,
although he's still giving me slightly reproachful looks as if I had gotten
under HIS feet.

I got the second shot yesterday. No reaction so far, other than the slight
soreness at the vaccination site (which is fairly normal for me when I get my
flu shots). They told me I might have some "flu like" symptoms in the next two
weeks indicating my immune system is coming fully online with the antibodies for
Covid, and that within two weeks I should be fully immune.

I'm hoping that by then some of the dreary weather will have cleared and I'll be
able to get out more.

At least not physically. That sounds like one frothy cesspit of suck. I had
only had my K20 a few weeks when it fell off of a monopod and landed on
pavement five feet below. I know what a terrible feeling that is. The good news
is that it seems that with the possible exception of some connectors, all of
the pieces that broke are probably just plastic case pieces.

Happy Valentines Day!

2021-02-14 Thread John
I tripped & fell and somehow managed to rip the display off the back of my K-1.
Instead of hanging by 4 legs it's now hanging by one. I can't see any damage to
the little cable that connects the display to the back of camera body, but the
display is not working.

It turns on & the auto-focus "appears" to work.

Also broke the plastic rim around the eyepiece (that holds the rubber piece in
place).

I don't think I broke anything on me.

I'm not very good at translation on the fly. So I'd better button it.

I know what that means, but I’ll keep my mouth zipped so others can try...

This is the sort of thing that makes language so fascinating, particularly when
you can trace the ways in which loan words change over centuries.

The thing that strikes me most about Russian is the incredible amount of
German loan words.

I had a hearty laugh when I found out that my Russian weather fax
receiver had a built-in reference oscillator referred to as the
"kamertonskiy generator" (if my latin transcription is correct). Just
recently, I've seen tramlines in Russia referred to as "marshrut",
obviously our German Marschroute, i.e. a marching route.

And it's not only Russian. The Croats have the wonderful word
'rajsferšlus'. I'll let you guess what that could be...

I did about 3 months of study at beginner level. I was about twenty years old
at the time so by the time we met I had forgotten almost everything - I would
have embarrassed myself if I’d tried to say anything.

I learned it because I was working at the British Library and they needed
people to work in the Russian scientific and technical section so they trawled
their records for linguistics and found me. I was happy to do it because my
girlfriend was half Russian (half Georgian to be precise), but they didn’t want
to teach us much beyond the basics, and I left fairly soon anyway.
