RE: How do you beat the blahs?

2002-07-12 Thread Simon King

I am intimately aware of post-partum (we call it post-natal) depression.
My apologies if anyone you know has suffered from it.
My suggestion was merely a light hearted thought.

You're not familiar with post-partum depression at all, I take it?

What did you do to beat the blahs?

Buy some gear. Shopping is always the answer.

Yes Pat, for about 10 years! Then I joined the PDML, and the
discussions and the PUG opportunity revived it for me. Working to an
assignment is s much better than just waiting for it to happen.

Re: How do you beat the blahs?

2002-07-11 Thread Cotty

For me this is very simple.

It's a bit like cooking - which I also enjoy very much, but as we all
know can be impossible to do when it really needs to get done. If I've
got the Cooking Blahs, I pick up a book of, or watch an ancient VHS tape
of a once-famous UK cook called Keith Floyd. Notorious for slurping the
vino while he threw together the most amazing delicacies, his exuberant
series of shows on the subject instantly gets the culinary juices going,
and before you can say 'moules marinieres', I'm in that kitchen like a
rat up a drainpipe.

Similarly, with the Photo Blahs, I reach for one of my books by Jeanloup
Sieff, Arnold Newman, Jane Bown, and hey presto. Especially the Jeanloup
Sieff, where I instantly get a craving to be slinking around the streets
of 1950s Paris, Gitane in mouth, Leica in hand, on my way to photograph a
nice 'bum in the sun'...

My life as a holodeck character :-)

But at least it gets the old juices flowing, and it's only by studying
the work of accomplished masters I find that I am spurred into some sort
of action.

I can't drive, which cuts down the available things to photograph.
Especially when you've done your best to take a picture of everything you
can find around you of remote interest.

So, last weekend I started using my 4x5 to take macro shots of things in
the backyard. This weekend I'm going to pick up some paper and additional
chemicals, and begin doing contact prints. I think my new thing is to do a
series of contacts, mount them all together (which'll be a whole new thing
to learn and spend money on, sigh), and give them away as little, uhm what
to call them, photo essays? Maybe try and pick things I know family
members like or would like, and give them 4 4x5 contacts in a frame. That
sort of thing.

In other words, same old junk, but whole new way to look at them.

Yes, sometimes I feel that way, blahs.

I usually surf the net to watch photographs made by other photographers.
Sometimes it gives a lot of ideas which I can use with some modifications
in the future photographic ventures. This cheers me a lot.

Cheers,

Patbob,

I am fortunate to have a couple of friends who are getting interested in
photography. One has Pentax gear, some of mine too, the other Canon.

Anyway, I can get them to go do some shooting. One is far from here, but
we have started a PUG-like theme assignment between the two of us. But once
they begin to ask questions I start to get the spark back in me. Though I
must admit that I rarely get the blahs photographically. I will hit
situations that are blah in terms of photos then I cheat and use the digital
to get something taken. But I just enjoy taking photos. With someone else
involved you can compare perspectives and what each of you notice.

I will also take out some gear that I don´t usually use, like the
screwmount stuff and take photos with that. A change of the routine is
always good.

Tonight I borrowed the squadron´s Nikon D1H digital SLR to take shots at
their intramural softball game. I surely missed the flare resistance of
Pentax lenses though.

Hope this gives you some ideas,
