K10D and AF500FTZ

2007-01-03 Thread Patrick Genovese
Hi,

Has anyone managed to used the 500FTZ in manual mode with a K10D ?

Here's the problem i'm facing..

1. If I leave the flash in ttl mode than is simply puts out full power
flash bursts as expected since it does not support P-TTL. So far so
good.

2. When i put the flash in Manual mode (press the mode button) and use
the adjust button to adjust the power level. The power level adjusts
accordingly but as soon as i half press the shutter release to focus,
the flash automatically reverts to TTL mode and hencforth full power
bursts. It seems that the camera is commanding the flash back into ttl
mode.

Has anyone seen this behaviour or am i doing something wrong.

Is the behaviour the same on the DS / DL / K100 ?

Regards

K10D and AF500FTZ Flash

2006-12-02 Thread Mark Cassino
I looked in the manual and it seems to only reference the newer FGZ
flashes. Is the K10D compatible with the older TTL flashes, the like
AF500 FTZ? Has anyone tried out this combo?

Thanks -

Patrick, let me humbly suggest that you take it to fully manual (M)
mode and try again. It seems to me that any (semi)automatic mode
forces P-TTL automatics to engage.

I did just now.

Pentax K10D, FA 50mm f1.4, f5.6 @ 1/60, ISO 100, AF-540 FGZ (~111 kb)

Pentax K10D, FA 50mm f1.4, f5.6 @ 1/60, ISO 100, AF-500 FTZ (~160 kb)

Both shots the flash was pointing straight at the subject. No
compensation of any kind & no post processing other than convert to
sRGB & downsize (EXIF data included).

The K10D doesn't do TTL flash metering. This samples proves that the
500 fires at full power.

Cheers,

Re: K10D and AF500FTZ Flash

2006-12-02 Thread Tom Lesser
All all EIs? On the *istD at EI 400 I get typically usable exposures
with a 500FTZ if the flash distance is over about 6 feet ... especially
if shooting RAW. But there was no consistency at EI 200 or EI 800.
So, I mostly dial down the 500FTZ to a manual setting that works for
the distance I'm shooting, and make minor aperture adjustments to
compensate.

BTW do the new flashes focus assist (SB) on the K10D or ist the AF good

As far as I know, the K10D won't do TTL, so you have to use the flash
in auto flash mode. I've used my AF400T with the K10D in autoflash

Does the AF-500 have an autoflash function? If so, it should work
relatively well. Of course you can use the guide number as well, but
full power isn't nice if you don't bounce it off of something.

I think one major drawback of the 500FTZ is it has no autocomputer possibility.
I may rememnber wrong but in my memry you either work TTL or full manual :(

One of the reason (having bodies not supporting TTL at that time) that
I went for Metz 40MZ2, years ago.

Markus,
The K10D didn't make use of the focus assist in my case, but I don't
think the light was low enough to know for sure whether it doesn't
work.

There has indeed been a lot of writing on this forum about the
flash/ISO issue with the *istD, and most people find what you
describe.

RE: K10D and AF500FTZ Flash

2006-12-03 Thread Jens Bladt
Since the AF500FTZ does not have auto-computer IIRC, this flash is useless
with the K10D, except for manual calculations, naturallly.
To me this is a major issue, since I have several expensive TTL-flashes,
that I use with my *ist D. One of them is priced similar to the K10D body!

Re: K10D and AF500FTZ Flash

2006-12-03 Thread Mark Cassino
Thanks to all who replied.

No - the Af500FTZ does not have an auto function (the old-fashioned
sensor in flash auto function.)

I have the AF 360FGT but it's been my main macro fash and has endured a
good degree of knocking around, and does not have a tilt and swivel head
(only a tilt head.) An upgrade may be in order..

thanks -

MCC
