Nice gallery, Chris. We had a splendid time on Sunday. Nice to see
PDMLers we'd met before and to finally meet Bob W in person.

Monday we went to see the astonishing Leonardo Da Vinci exhibit at the
National Gallery and then strolled about London before catching a play
in the West End (a stage version of Hitchcock's "39 Steps" - really,
really good).

We caught the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibit at the Natural
History Museum today (jaw-dropping stuff) and then caught a train to
Oxford. Cotty had to work late so we missed him today but may catch up
with him tomorrow. We had to settle for dinner and a few pints on our own.

More fun in store for tomorrow!

RE: London PDML again

2009-09-19 Thread SV Hovland
Thanks.

Tripod which was difficult in the crowd and two stacked ND filters. One B+W 110
- ND3,0 - 10 BL - 1000x filter and one B+W 106 - ND1,8 - 6 BL - 64x filter.
Both stacked was probably to much, because I then had to use ISO400 and f/2.8
to get 30 seconds. When stacked, they give a rather strong brown color cast,
but this is easily corrected with the white balance tool in raw processing.

I was also using my tripod on the other side of the river, but it was even more
crowded, some sort of public event going on and security people running around.
I sat down on the grass and used my tripod in the lowest position. But the
pictures wasn't anything to write home about, but I tried :-)

Incidentally, I expect many of you have been wandering why we were posing so
handsomely in front of the statue of General Wolfe of Quebec on Saturday.

http://www.mitch.myzen.co.uk/PDML/slides/_IGP0842.html

I probably don't have to remind most you of that Sunday was the 250th
anniversary of the Battle of Quebec, when the forces of His Majesty under
the command of Wolfe, a Greenwich man, seized Canada from the loathsome
clutches of the treacherous French and handed the grateful colony of Canada
into the loving care of the British Nation. Wolfie gave his all for Canada.

Thanks Christine. It was one of those lucky moments. I'd just taken one with

different settings for the fluorescent lights in the tunnel. The cyclist

'To catch a cold' in everday Spanish is 'constiparse'.

'Constipado' is the past particple of 'constipar'.

To say 'I have a cold' you say 'Estoy constipado'. 'Estoy muy
constipado' means I have a nasty cold, that's all. In fact, it has now
moved on somewhat and I am just plain bunged up, which is really where
'constipado' comes from, hence the similarity to 'constipated'.

It's a well-known false friend, like 'embarazada'.

You can say 'tengo frio', but it means 'I am cold'.

Hi Gonz,

My Spanish-English dictionary says a cold is constipación, but the 'net
says 'constipación' is Spanish for the English "constipation.'

There was a 'constiparse' which reportedly means "to catch a cold," but
I'm not capable of translating that to everyday Spanish...

It doesn't list constipado as a word at all.

However, taking Bob's first two words, "I am very..." that fits
constipated better than "I am very cold."
I don't know how to say "I have a cold." Literal translations certainly
don't work [Tengo un frio."]

Although you would think it would mean that if you went by Spanglish and
not real spanish. It actually means he has a cold, so he needs a box of
tissues and not a roll of toilet paper.

Yes it is! Got a good look at one stag and his herd, he did quite a
nice job of bellowing and posing for us, but even though we were
close the 77mm (my longest lens) isn't really long enough to obtain
him as more than just a small figure on the frame.

My buddy had his Canon DSLR with the 75-300 image stabilized lens. He
got a few nice shots of the stag running FL around the 150-200mm
mark. Now I'm wanting one of the DA*60-250 lenses...

Thanks for organizing, Cotty!

For your records:
- Unfortunately, Richard Day will not be able to make it on Sunday
due to health issues. He is feeling much better now, we visited while
I was in Gloucester, but he will be taking some time to rest.
- Another friend and Pentax user from DPReview.com, Steve Jacobs,
will be joining us. And yet another might be able to make it as well.
They've both been given the information required for meeting up.

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone. Today's photo expedition was
a nice long trundle through Richmond Park ... exhausting but worth it!

best,
Godfrey

I dreamt the other night that I was walking down Piccadilly from Green Park
and everybody except me was wearing Regency costume, periwigs and all. I was
