Musings on image selection for the Annual
Hi Guys, Looking back at my Pentax images from last year I didn't shoot with my Pentax kit a great deal, about 2400 images all up with probably 10% of them sequences for panos, about 10% of images shot for myself and the remainder records of events and family. I took the route of throwing everything I shot in a folder and discarding what wasn't up to the quality that I want to be submitting. As a matter of interest I shot just over 1800 images with my s90 in the course of 7 months. There doesn't seem to be a great selection to find three worthy images from, I could go to past years but personally I would prefer to only submit images captured during the year. That said I'm currently down to 83 images and hopefully I'll have it down to a more manageable nine or so by next week. Then comes the hard part. How do you decide what makes the grade in the case of the PDML Annual? Going back to my experience with my Blurb book, and given that the PDML book will be printed by Blurb, I'm wondering whether it would have been worthwhile soft proofing the candidates with the Blurb ICC profile. Re: Musings on image selection for the Annual
Rob, I'm very critical of my own photographic images. My wife gets frustrated when we look at my take from, say, last weekend's outing, and I'm all "yeah, but the horizon..." or "M, there's a tree growing out of her head." She's usually more of a "Ohhh, look at the girls. Aren't they having fun?" type, though I do trust her eye when she's looking with a more artistic intent. I honestly don't know how to feel when people who don't *love* me are honestly complementary of my work. The gallery opening in Chicago was truly uncharted territory with so many people whose work I really admire actually commenting on mine. I think that was nice, but I have my issues. That being said, for the Annual, I'm picking out the very best things I did in the last year. It's not hard. I used Lightroom to sort for the year and added photos I *really* like (only about six) to a quick collection, made my decision, asked my wife what she thought, did a very little bit of processing (I actually ported one of them out to Elements!) and uploaded the files. Having 80+ "favorite" images from one year's shooting is, for me, not likely to ever be a problem. Cory kind of our there on my sleeve now if you don't like my selections ;) On 1/21/2011 1:41 AM, Rob Studdert wrote: Hi Guys, Looking back at my Pentax images from last year I didn't shoot with my Pentax kit a great deal, about 2400 images all up with probably 10% of them sequences for panos, about 10% of images shot for myself and the remainder records of events and family. Re: Musings on image selection for the Annual
FWIW I'm probably my worst critic as I delete any image for the slightest 'flaw', & as a result I don't keep a lot of images I've shot. Critical editing is one way to improve your photography. Think about it. I would only submit an image that I felt was my best effort. YMMV. 83 worthy images in a year of photography seems pretty good to me. Re: Musings on image selection for the Annual
So, last year, I sent in three pictures and of course Mark picked the one I thought was the least interesting. That damn curatorship thing; no, I'm not complaining, I'm in awe of Mark's work on the book and he's earned the right to make the editorial statement he wants and other evidence suggests that he has better photographic taste than I anyhow. I swore up and down that this year I'd pick the one I wanted to pick and send that one. Hah. Three again; but this time, I really tried hard not to like any of them more than the other two. We'll see if it works. -Tim On Fri, Jan 21, 2011 at 1:06 PM, Ken Waller wrote: > FWIW > > I'm probably my worst critic as I delete any image for the slightest 'flaw', > & as a result I don't keep a lot of images I've shot. > > Critical editing is one way to improve your photography. I passed over all images from this year that were not family album and/or Galia's school project and were rated with one star in LR. 2. I passed over few more folders for more images. 3. During two first steps I marked candidates with the keyword. Then I stopped. 4. A week (or was it two weeks, I cannot say for sure) later I returned to only those shots that I picked up previously. I thought a little and decided on a theme or common emotion/motif/reason that might connect three photographs together. It did not have to be obvious, but the connection did exist in my warped mind. Thence I chose the three shots and after a bit more of deliberation produced the files as per Mark's instructions and up the wire they went. I cannot put down in words my criteria for choosing, sorry about that.
