My K3
After owning the thing for all of 6 hours, I can honestly say this is one hell of a nice camera. Lets get the obvious out of the way: The AF is greatly improved over previous Pentax cameras. This is likely going to be pretty random, and probably fairly long, so bear with me if you want Ricoh is very much in the game here. The box says Ricoh in at least six places on all six sides of the box, which is one more that it says Pentax if I read it right. On the camera itself, it says Ricoh on the back and on the bottom. This differs from the K5 box which only says Hoya in fine print on the bottom. Ricoh seems to want the world to know, in no uncertain terms that this is their deal. On to the camera. It is chunky, this is no featherweight, but it feels good. It is definitely bigger and heavier than the K5, though not by much. It feels like a K5 that is about 1/2 size larger. Typical Pentax interface, which is to say very good. They've added a couple of goodies, one of which satisfies one of the things that has annoyed me since the K7, which is the 4 way buttons. When the K7 came out, they had broken the interface, and then fixed it on the first firmware. On the K5, they just left it broken. The K3 has a second button that, among other things, toggles the four way from AF select to the functions settings. I spent some time pushing the OK button expecting a beep before I found the cure. Nicely done Pentax. For those of us that shoot video, we now seem to have AV, TV and manual as well as full automatic exposure, along with a toggle to go from video to still with the flick of a well, it flicks... A toggle, I suppose. We now have AF tracking across all 25 or whatever it is AF points. It remains to be seen if it works, but hey, they tried. That's gotta be good for something. Everything seems to be customizable in one way or another. There are three user settings that allow custom settings to be locked in. As I expected, you can't lock in manual exposure with a set aperture and shutter speed, so don't put away the electrical tape yet. Note to Pentax: is it really too much trouble to let me disable the dials completely so that my camera setting don't get boinked by accident while I'm shooting? The metering mode switch is gone (yay). It is now a lever that locks the mode dial or not. With the dial unlocked, it turns freely, with it locked, the middle button must be pushed while the dial is turned. I like the way they have done it. The metering mode switch always screwed me up. The metering mode is now a push a button and turn a dial affair. It's fine. A 32gb card has a capacity of 598 DNG raw files. If you want to know how many PEFs that is, buy a K-3. You can put in both the photographer's name and the copyright holder's name into whatever file the camera uses for this sort of stuff. The screen seems better than the one that came with my K5. I suspect I will leave it in and not bother with a Katz Eye screen on this camera. The AF mode button leads to madness. I suppose I should read that part of the manual. I have scheduled a stdio shoot for Nov. 11th, so I am sure I will have a better idea of how the thing works after that. Overall, my impression is pretty positive so far. The camera seems, on the surface, to be more of an evolution than a revolution from previous Pentax cameras. To me, this is a good thing. The camera is, while different, familiar. Lucky you :) Allthough I like the black one slightly better, the silver matches two of my limiteds well, and the strap looks nice too. Re: My K3.....
The K-3 body only is apparently IN STOCK at B&H. Amazon is still saying Nov. 15th availability. A guy on dpreview Pentax forum had pics of his already arriving. B&H shows the KITS still available for pre-order. So, PDMLers in the U.S. - order your K-3 overnighted and give us your report on Sunday at the latest. :) On Thu, Oct 31, 2013 at 8:21 AM, Bill wrote: > On 30/10/2013 9:39 PM, John Francis wrote: > >> >> AFAIK the Silver K-3 kit (with the matching grip and an extra battery) >> costs round about the same as the same package in black, not the same >> as a black K-3 'body only'. >> >> > In my neck of the woods, the K3 silver comes with the grip included for > about $300.00 more than the K3 black body only. Re: My K3.....
At b&h the price of a black camera with grip was approximately the same as the silver kit, so I went black. Re: My K3.....
In Oz, the silver 'kit' was A$200 more, which is a bargain for the grip and a spare battery. There's no kit available with the black version including grip though, so I can't really compare pricing there. Still, I ordered the black one. I have plenty of D-LI90s.. I'll probably pay more than $200 for the grip - but I just couldn't bring myself to buy the ugly silver monstrosity version :) - Peter -Original Message- From: John Francis Sent: Thursday, October 31, 2013 2:09 PM To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List Subject: Re: My K3. Re: My K3.....
Yes, it seems to me too, that the silver one is less expensive, if you want a grip anyway (I do). I own the grip for the K20D and the K-5 and I love this for vertical shots - and I never run out of power. However, in my country I get a fine discount at a special store (Dustin Home), provided by my employer - appr. 125 USD. But this store only sells the black version. So, I guess I'll settle for black :-) Regards Jens -- Treat others as you would like to be treated yourself. Re: My K3.....
Congrats on the K-3 and getting the limited for the same price as the "plain chocolate" version, Bill! I just haven't cared for the silver (like they put on the FA-J and the cheaper MZ film cameras). The metallic-like silver of the MX (etc) now that I like. Not sure why they can't get that same look these days.
