Wow, Ted! I almost missed this post entirely!

You've got some great shots in there, and it looks like you made the
best of your trip out to California. Glad to see you back online, and I
hope you're doing well these days. The photos of Steel Creek brought
back fond memories.

Ted,
This is too many good photos at once!
I can't absorb all of them.
My first visit was the airplanes - Aluminum Overcast & Ft. Smith Airshow 2011.
Then I loved the colors in the Steel Creek set, and
the Roadtrip visit to Canyonlands NP. was most beautiful.
You also should get these set-up so you can move directly to the next photo.
It gets to be a drag to pull up a photo, then close the window, then
pull up another.

How To Turn Off Sound on my Website

Just saw a couple of questions about not wanting to hear the sound on
my website (www.andrewallenphoto.com) as the opening slideshow plays.
If you take your mouse and hover over the shot being displayed in the

- I know not everyone wants to hear it.

If that's how it is, Luka, then leave it! I like having the URL to
images available to me (from my websites) to post in fora, etc, but if
you have no issue with it, then that's that.

Now let me praise some of your photos, which I'll have to describe :-)

* Lady with pink umbrella crossing flooded street.
* Party shot with guy smoking cigarette.

I did look through all the galleries, but my favourites were all in

I quite like it as it is, it's a lovely uncluttered and modest layout
which serves the images well, nicely done, great images and I love the

Good stuff, Luka. Simple, sparse, and no overbearing use of Flash. It
seems to match your Photography style quite well. Lovely intimate
portraits of your partner and Life.

One thing I'm not sure I like is that I can't easily link to a
particular photo; I wanted to say "I really liked this photo" and link
to it, but couldn't. I can imagine others might have that issue too.

Your best anti theft device is to make the images on the small side with
lots of compression, and then watermark them.
Here's a little trick for you if you write your own HTML.
Post the picture very small, just a few hundred pixels on a side, and them
put larger size tags in the code to force the browser to resize the image.
You can do at least a 50% increase this way before the quality goes to hell
on the viewers screen, but when they try to download the picture they get a
much smaller one.

Logically, it couldn't be any other way. To view it in a browser, the
image has to be downloaded. At that point, it's out of the web server's
control. Now, you could have some proprietary format that only your
viewer program can display, but it still ends up in the video card as an
array of pixels.

If it's protected well enough someone can't possibly steal it, they also
can't view it.

The only "safe" images aren't on the web.

One reason I try to post the smallest file of an image that doesn't degrade

As others have mentioned, it's very hard to display images on the web
in a "nick-proof" way. Even if you embed them in a Flash-application

There's a balance. Business lost to theft on one side, business gained
by increased exposure through the credits and the links on the

Right click protection usually means if you right click the Save Picture As
and Save Target As are grayed out, disabled. So it makes it harder to

All that does is disable right clicking and "save image" or whatever the
flavour is on your particular browser. To bypass, you just open an image
viewing programme and look in your browser's cache for it.

_Then_ rightclicksaveimage.

Vista probably doesn't allow access to caches. 8-)))

The web is like a shopping mall, your pictures are like belongings that you
leave on the benches in the mall when you leave.
When you put stuff on the web, you may as well forget about protecting your
rights regarding copying.

My website ponder

2007-06-12 Thread David J Brooks
Last year a few people sent me a right click script to help in web
theft. I could not seem to get it to work, mostlikly not putting it
exactly in the right spot.

Now here is something to ponder.

I have been on a few Weshots albums lately and i notice that, although
my thumbs are still being taken and used to show their friends, even
with copy right statment, they are giving photo credit and website
info along with the photo.

It still makes me mad, but less.

Comments on this anyone.

I attempted to send a submission this month, but I suspect the problem is at
my end rather than yours. I will put up a PAW version instead of this over
the weekend.

The PUG is a fantastic resource and thanks to both yourself and Jostein for
providing this.

I am afraid this is Jostein's part.
The autopug is his baby.
If you are in doubt please send the submission as mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with
a sensible Subject.
Otherwise it gets caught in my Spamfilter.

Then I'll check whether it made it or not and submit it myself.
It might have something to do with time outs.
Or you tried to submit a picture which is too big. This won't be accepted
and if it is really big the site times out.
I got one pic with 1 MB once and this definitely kills the page.

Adelheid,

I hope the submission process gets better soon.

This is the 2nd or third month that I have worked to prepare and submit
something only to find nothing in the PUG. It's frustrating.

The AutoPUG submission page errored off as the last response I got after
pressing SUBMIT. Does this mean it went thru and then errored or that it
didn't go thru at all? (most likely) I just couldn't tell and without a
confirmation, I didn't know.

Re: Only -PUG June is available on my website

2004-05-28 Thread Rfsindg
Adelheid,

I hope the submission process gets better soon.

This is the 2nd or third month that I have worked to prepare and submit something only
to find nothing in the PUG. It's frustrating.

The AutoPUG submission page errored off as the last response I got after pressing
SUBMIT. Does this mean it went thru and then errored or that it didn't go thru at
all? (most likely) I just couldn't tell and without a confirmation, I didn't know.

Regards, Bob S.

Re: ONLY - PUG January is on my website

2004-01-25 Thread Boris Liberman
Hi!

For my part, I strongly oppose that the PUG should be a host for
personal
galleries. There are already loads of places offering that service
for free,
and I don't see why the PDML should take on the effort of providing
yet
another.
I think I agree with you, Jostein. PUG is unique and I think that the
move to come shouldn't spoil this. However, I think of one
improvement, that we could implement that could probably bridge
Jostein's opinion and those who want to have personal galleries at
PUG.

As I remember, old PUG had this feature of looking up a photog by
name. Then it would display a table where one would have to click
through all the links of given photog to see his or her pics. What if
instead, a generated page would be created each time one clicks on,
let us say, Jostein's name ... This page would contain thumbs of
all the pics that were submitted by Jostein. Then, at least, if one
were looking for a particular pic for particular person they wouldn't
have to do some exhaustive search...

Such page could be called "Jostein's personal gallery at PUG".

I wouldn't go any further however.

Just my cents.

Since I cannot do any such trick myself, I will have to go silent here
...

The idea of having automated posting and the gallery itself on the same
server is a good one. I'd just like to throw in one note of caution;
the human quality control we have today is really high-level, thanks to the
commitment of the PUGmeisters, Adelheid now and William Robb before her.
I would hate to see the QC disappear in an automated system.

also,I would be quite happy to contribute to the programming if my skills suits

Folks,
We have already got many offers for monetary contribution, and one offer to
take over the hosting. You just have to admire the commitment of people on
this list!

But Alin raises two separate issues in his mail. One is to move the gallery
to another server, the other is to change the solution itself. The
latter begs discussion.

Indeed it does! What would that cost per person about a buck a year?
The only question I have is, has the site been around a while?

Re: PUG.ORG (was:Re: ONLY - PUG January is on my website)

2004-01-24 Thread John Francis

I think the first thing we need to do is decide if we
need to do anything :-)

Then, if we *do* decide to move away from komkon, do we
want to just use one of the photo-hosting sites such as
smugmug (which looks good at first inspection), or do we
want something with a little more configurability?

We've got several good graphics artists, web programmers,
etc., on the list - we could automate PUG submission even
more than we have now, and have CGI scripts to generate
per-photographer galleries as well as per-month views.

The bad news is that sites which let you write your own
CGI scripts referencing back-end databases tend to be a
little more expensive than the simple hosting sites.

But, if we *do* decide to go that way, it's possible that
I may be able to provide that level of access at no charge.
(I could easily do it on my existing personal domain, but
I wouldn't do that without checking with the web hoster; my
web access is a gift from a friend who runs a hosting site).

I'd only ask him, though, if we'd make use of the features to
provide something more than just a simple image hosting site.
And I'd register a new domain name so we could run the PUG as
a true virtual domain.

I doubt if we could afford his market rates - I think his
cheapest rate is around $250/year (and upwards ...). But if
we want all the bells and whistles (including email, mailing
lists, and just about anything else you could think of) then
I'm pretty sure he'd have no problem with me setting up the
site (root access to the main site servers can be useful :-)

On the topic of a home for PUG

Perhaps www.smugmug.com should be given consideration as a home for
pug. There are several advantages.

Storage is unlimited at all subscription levels.

Bandwidth allowances are as follows:

2 gigabytes per month at the standard $29.95 per year level.
4 gigabytes per month at the power user $49.95 per year level.
8+ gigabytes per month at the professional $99.95 per year level.
After a file is uploaded, the smugmug software automatically generates
thumbnails and several display sizes. This would allow users to view
images at the size most appropriate for their bandwidth and monitor size
with no additional workload placed on the administrator.

Comments and discussion can be enabled for each photo.

Details are in the help section at

You can see how I've chosen to use this site at
Yes, the PUG could have it's own domain name.
These are primarily family snapshots, but check the *istD and OptioS
galleries for examples of the range of file sizes. These galleries have
"originals" enabled so you can see the full size original files.

There are a lot of features I haven't listed. Click on "help" when you get
to the smugmug site for details.

Given the low cost, and low maintenance necessary to run the site, I think
this would be an excellent format for PUG and useful for the list members
in general.

I've posted these links before. Although I have no connection with SmugMug
other than that of satisfied customer, I feel obligated to say that putting
my email address into the "referred by" field when subscribing gives you a
small discount me a small credit.

See you later, gs

I'd be willing to kick in towards the total cost as well. 2 gigs of
bandwidth sounds a bit low to me, though - hopefully someone at Komkon (is

  For 800 MB storage and 2 GB bandwidth I expect 10$/month. [2
GB/month is a rough figure but I really don't think current PUG
traffic is anywhere close to that; somebody in the PUG team with
access to komkon logs might provide the real value]. Add to this
20$/year for the domain name and the annual cost is 140$.
To play it safe we should cover the expenses for the next two years
so this makes 280$. I am willing to contribute with up to $40.

Well, first of all, Adelheid:

Complaints? Are you kidding? Complaints?!?

Sounds to me like you and Jostein are going way above and beyond the call of
duty trying to sort this stuff out (none of which, obviously your fault).

I'd say a big huge thanks is in order for your efforts in getting PUG up and
running again.

I'll buy you a drink at GFM.And, Jostein, too, I guess...

Now, as far as Alin's suggestion of us pooling funds for a PUG site on
another server (is that the right terminology? I hope so), I'm all for
that. If a one time "donation" of, say $20US from most or many of us can
keep things going for a couple of years, I'm down for that (as the kids say
nowadays - or is that phrase now longer "in"?)

Thanks again,
frank

Hi folks,

since der komkon server seems to be down for the unforseeable future I
decided to put at least the January PUG on my own website.
This means:

Some links on this page are NOT!!! working.
But you have at least a link to Josteins page and you can look at the
pictures of January.
Since I changed some typos directly on the komkon server the descriptions
and other things are not ok on some pages. But the pics should be there.
I don't have much space on my site, so only the current month is available!
No archives as such.
So now the issue of the URL
It will change each month at present it is:
http://www.kirschten.de/PUG/04jan
I will work out something more convenient if the komkon server stays out
for
good.
If you have complaints questions about this site please use the mailing
address:

mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

The address on the page DOESN'T work!!!

I hope this helps a little.
Please be patient, the server connection is not as good as the one on the
komkon server.
Cheers
Adelheid

Where my website is hosted -- http://detailhosting.com/ -- it costs me $5.95 a
month, but the PUG may need more bandwidth and space than I have (5gig, 250mb),
so it may cost a bit more than that. In any case web hosting is not as expensive
as it used to be.

To the PUG team and anybody else interested,

If the komkon (a private non-lucrative initiative) is going down, I
suggest it's time to make our own server. Prices of hosting and
domains are quite accessible and there should be no problem for us
to raise the necessary funds required to keep the site running for
the next couple of years. Not to mention that we might switch at
some time to a dynamic site that automates posting, page generation,
mail confirmation, personal mini-gallery, etc. We have among us
enough programmers perfectly able to contribute.

Any one willing to act on behalf of the community and gather the
money to pay for the registration and hosting of, say,
  www.pugallery.org ?

P.S. I came up with the same idea a couple of years ago, hopefully
this time there's more enthusiastic support with the advent of
digital in the Pentax world. :oT
