I agree with your assessment of B&H. I've shopped there numerous times, and
have been treated very well. A lot of the countermen are real
enthusiasts and
enjoy talking to their customers. It's a great place. And you're right about
New Yorkers as well. They're not rude, they're just in a hurry. I worked there
for 11 years, and I have to say those were the best years of my life.
It's a
great town with great people.

I would have to agree here, even though I appreciate that they can be
dismissive and rude, I too had a very pleasant experience at B&H. I asked to
see an MZ0S (my first view) and I made it plain to them that I wouldn't be
purchasing it there and then. However since there wasn't one on the shelf they
had a brand spanking new one shipped up from the bowels of the place and opened
it for me. Many of the sales guys on the Pentax counter hadn't seen one yet
either so there ended up being quite a crowd on the other side of the counter
:-)

Stan,

I know that the stores in NYC can be quick in terms of answering
questions since they are pushing amounts of photographic equipment at low
prices. You are not really paying for service and they are usually very
crowded and busy. But ...

I do have to point out that I recently wrote here about my recent
experience in B&H (this month) and how I spent over 15 MINUTES each at both
the used department and new 35mm SLR departments. Yes I purchased used
equipment, but all the time at the SLR department was after showing that I
was not going to be buying anything that day. And both times I ended the
encounter, they would have easily kept going.

I don't think that being a NYer means being rude,

Good mail-order stores: B&H, Adorama, Camera World of Oregon,
Charlotte Camera, KEH. There are others, but those I listed will all
give good service and good prices for sure.

Avoid like the plague: anyone who demands your credit card number
before you even place the order, or tells you there is an extra charge
for the neck strap for the PZ1p (the neck strap is sealed in the box -
there is no extra charge for it).or claims you must buy a Tiffen UV
filter to make the camera work.

Extended Warranty: good only if the camera fails in the time period
covered by it. I know of two weak points on the PZ1p: the spring on
the RTF flash, and the edge of the bottom plate at the battery cover.
The bottom plate is a two to twenty-dollar home fix that Granny could
do easily. The RTF is better left to a tech. The other problems that
may occur would probably be accident damage from a fall or contact
with water, which may or may not be covered under extended warranty.

Give the guy at Ritz a chance to match, say, the Adorama price. It he
won't, you have to decide if you want to donate $100 to Ritz. Or you
could go ahead and buy mail order, save the $100, then spend the
savings at Ritz on film or processing or a bag.

Or you could buy a used one from Ebay or list member - I saw Doug
offering one on PDML recently for a bargain basement price, which I
would have snapped up if I needed another PZ1p.

Need Advice (was:Re: PZ-1p review)

2001-12-29 Thread James Moniz

I have decided on the PZ-1P, and will probably sell my P5 body. That having been
said...I have one being held for me at a Cameras West (Ritz) store in Seattle, but I
can save about $100 by ordering online or from one of the companies advertising in
PETERSEN'S. They all range in price from $465 to $520 (The lower-priced ones are, of
course, generally "grey market").

I have checked the following companies: Cambridge, B&H, Adorama, AAA, Smile,
Discovery, Abes (and a few others not selling the Z1-P)

Here are a few questions...(I know these have come up before, so please bear with
me...)
A) Are there any of these companies that you highly recommend?
B) Are there any I should Avoid Like The Plague?
C) Are there any other retailers I should check out online?
D) Should I care whether or not the camera is "grey market"? (I currently don't...)
E) Should I actually fall for the Extended Warranty Type Thang, just in case?
F) Should I avoid the online sellers altogether and just buy the one at Ritz? The
salesman really went the extra mile in procuring one for me, after all...and that kind
of service is damned hard to find anymore.
Thank you in advance for your advice.
Jim
