Ah, well, yes. I tend to shoot large fine jpegs in camera and as such, I set up
my gear for either black and white or colour (as if the camera was loaded with
either black and white film or colour film). That way, my mind is either tuned
in to mono or tuned in to colour, as so I tend to think in either of those
modes. It works for me.

>And when you do your PP is that Lightroom that you use?

I use Adobe CS6 which is basically a standalone version of Photoshop. I
organise my pics as files and folders right on the Mac.

Before Larry loaned me his K-3 I just shot pictures with my phone, putting
everything I could in the center of the frame. Larry talked, showed, and
helped. I think I mentioned his nearly infinite patience.

Thank you!
It could be beginner’s luck, in my experience that’s definitely a thing.
But in my case it is also help of a much, much more experienced photographer.

Subject: New member's intro - photographing photographers

Hello!
I am new to the list, new to Pentax, new to digital photography, and new to
photography.

I am still discovering the features of my newly acquired K-5 (thanks so much,
Boris!) after playing with Larry’s K-3 (thanks, Larry, for your gear, your
time, and your nearly endless patience). I am still struggling with focusing
and am barely touching the surface of comprehension of what light actually
means when you are not just looking at it but operating an external lens to
create images.

The reason I started paying attention to photography was Larry’s landscape
photos. He photographed places in Oregon and I layered his vision of them with
my vision of them. I thought that I could communicate my vision through the
images I take but so far I cannot. As of now I find my landscape photos to be
interminably boring. But flowers and humans do cooperate sometimes.

Below are the two photos I am currently happiest with. While the photographers
were creating landscape photos that would be pleasing for me to look I was
photographing them, trying to capture their faces lit by sunshine and smiles.

K-5 Tamron 28-75 f/2.8

I am looking forward to sharing more photos in the future and to hearing from
you what works, what doesn’t, and how I can get better.

Thanks!

Thankee kindly sir. I can't remember if I was shooting from the hip or looking
through. I think I was amazingly lucky with the are in focus as the camera was
clearly rotating during exposure.

Thing is, you could do this on purpose a hundred times and never hit it.
Sometimes it just works

Hmmm. When I approach a photograph at the taking stage, sometimes I see 'the
story' right away, sometimes I see the story about to happen, but sometimes I
don't see the story at all.

Taking the last category first (as I do tend to do things ass-backwards) not
seeing 'the story' (or call it what you like) is not a bad thing. Sometimes I
*think* I see something, and other times I think that maybe there is something
there that I can't 'see' now, but might 'see' later. In any event, when later
looking through the images, I'll know right away by seeing them on the screen
in front of me. More in a moment about my selection process.

Here's an example of a shot that I simply grabbed as I was walking and had no
idea if it would work or not. Only when I saw it later, I realised I liked it
and there was a story there:

When 'sometimes I see the story about to happen' is when the elements of a
would-be photo are taking shape, and about to happen, but haven't happened yet.
A classic example would be that you've found a wonderful scenario in front of
you but it just needs a little something 'extra' to make it work better. Say,
you find some graffiti on a wall next to a walkway, so it might be better to
wait for an added element (say, someone walking past) before you push the
shutter button. But it might not. Pressing the sutter at the right time is 'the
decisive moment'. Here's my humble offering:

And seeing the story right away is the obvious one. You can see it happening in
front of you, sometimes looking through the lens, sometimes not. Mostly not.
What I would define as a 'good photographer' is being aware of what is going on
around you, being aware of what is likely to happen, and being aware of what
your own preferences are. The story you want to tell. Don't forget that a
photograph isn't just a representation of what is going on in front of you and
your camera, but a representation of your interpretation of the story that is
going on in front of you and your camera. How you tell that story is how you
select the lens, how you select the shutter speed and aperture, how you
position yourself with the light - or indeed if you bring your own light. It's
your blank canvas to tell that story, to convey that scene, to photographically
describe what you see and later present it as part of your art.

And finally, just a word on selection. If you take a LOT of pictures (I'm
naming no names here!!) it can be daunting to look through endless thumbnails
in search of that keeper. We all do it slightly differently. All I can tell you
is how I do it.

When I pop the memory card into my computer, I drag across the folder with the
images in onto my desktop, and eject the card. Then I open the folder with the
images and open the images in a basic frontline photo viewer, in my case, on a
Mac and with 'Preview'. I then go through each image, one by one, and right
away, if I don't see 'the story' then it's 'cmd' + 'del' instantly. Yes, I
delete them into the trash there and then. Each pic, as I look at it, right
away, if it doesn't hit me right away with a 'this pic definitely has something
to it' or a 'hmm this pic might have something to it, maybe look again at it
later', if none of those 2 criteria are met, it's trashed. This is because I
feel comfortable looking at something and getting a gut reaction.

That thins out the crowd by probably 50 percent or so.

Later, I will look again at the rest, and from those I will reverse the trend
and pic out those I like, those that stand out of the crowd and sing to me. But
I won't delete the rest, they'll get saved in an archive. Who knows, I might
change my idea of style, or look again at how I interpret a scene, or at the
very least give me something to do in those years to come when I am less mobile
and more likely to sit on my butt all day!

I hope this gives you some insight into another way. There is no right and
wrong way, there's only your way :-)

But please, do keep posting images - that's what this group is all about.

cheers

welcome, Olga!
glad to have another gal on board.
Both of those shots are nice.. showing to me, at least, a lot of
personality of the subject.
I'd guess, though, that the photo of Kate was taken without her
knowledge at that moment and when you shot the photo
of Larry, with that big grin on his mug, that he knew very well he was
in your cross hairs...maybe even posing for a " look at the happy Pentax
user"
or you just said something that made him laugh. Though it's been (gasp)
ten years since I met him in person - I remember him shooting with a
look of intense concentration.  NIce shot whicheve but I"m curious if
I'm right :-)

Picture of Larry was more intentional. Picture of Kate was more opportunistic -
I just saw nice light on her face. Larry and I also cropped him out of picture
of Kate in postprocessing. I wondered at the time if adding another person with
a camera added to a story.

Actually, I do have one, a Pentax 67 that was given to me. I was experimenting
with both hand held light meters and using my dslr to get the exposure, and the
frames I got with my DSLR looked better than the film frames.

The way I phrase it:

Photos are like sentences, the best ones have both a subject and a verb.

I’ve got something like 700k frames in my lightroom catalog, though many of
them are bracketing, there are about fifty photos in the portfolio I use to

Welcome.

Olga, given that we share the same language (not the one I am using to
write this message), I would gladly share with you some of my digital
library. Specifically, on subject of photographic composition.

And I absolutely second what Cotty wrote you in his message - pictures tell
stories. So, I am all ears :-).

Welcome Olga,

Looking at your two portraits,
I must say you certainly look far more experienced than you declared.
That must be a good sign of talent.

Welcome Olga. There re some wise voices on this list - mine is not one of them.

But that pic of Larry is really good - it's captured an atmosphere, it's
telling a story. The picture of Kate, not so much.

Pictures tell stories. It's up to you to interpret that story and bring it to
the attention of others. Based on what you've shown so far, I'd say a 50% hit
rate is exceptionally good ;-)

I'm lucky to hit 10% !!

Enjoy your photography.

New member's intro - photographing photographers

2020-03-12 Thread Olga Iona Custer
