that was another reason that I though I would originally pass on that
one. one can only stand watching him read his lines off a card for so

Re: OT: Anyone see Brick?

2006-08-30 Thread Russell Kerstetter
I did not see Crash, but my wife did, and she did not like it very
much, so I assume that I would not either as we have similar taste
(although... she did not like Brick, so I don' t know). I added Night
Listener, because we like like Robin, but I had not heard of that one
before. And you say that Scanner Darkly was good? I have not read
anything about it, we only saw the previews and passed it off.
Scanner is the one that uses real actors, but is sort of animated
over? There is so much crapola that comes out now, that when I see
something like that (esp. w/ Keanu) I just assume that it is some sort
of gimmick. Like I mentioned, we like Robin, so we went and rented
'RV' (not that it is in the same category of movie we are discussing
here, it is just the one I can think of off the top of my head) and
even in a non-action comedy, there was a lot of blue/green screening
going on. Obviously, you can't really high-center an RV and then use
it like a teeter-totter to get it off, but why couldn't they have
actually filmed the lake scenes ?!? My point being, that lately I shy
away from effects-laden films, because it annoys me. :) Which is one
thing that I really liked about Brick, is that for the most part, any
effects were limited to what you can do by choice of lens.

character mode, Bogart's character is in control of the situation and
triumphs in the end The patter however, is very noirish ;-)) Generally,
in a true noir film or novel, the main male character is more self
destructive, on the road to ruin, or out of control and spiraling
downwards. One can look to Kubrick's film, The Killing, in which Sterling
Hayden is manipulated by people and events, and ultimately dies at the end,
within sight of his goal. In contemporary films, Bound is a good example,
where Caesar, played by Joey Pants meets his downfall at the hands of two
very conniving women, and some of the other men in the film are manipulated
by these two very clever women.. The Last Seduction is another great
 contemporary noir flick.

You may surmise that I'm somewhat of a fan of noir, and just finished
reading, for the second time, Dark City Dames, which is something of a bio
of six of the (arguably) greatest dames in film noir: Audrey Totter,
Marie Windsor, Jane Greer, Evelyn Keyes, Coleen Gray, and Ann Savage. I
 highly recommend the book:

True. It was too early (1941) for noir, as most were
made in the period of the late 1940's to early 1950's.
Some theorists have said it was the post war
alienation felt by returning GI's and the reversal in
gender roles with women in the workplace (and its
subsequent paranoia and unease) that are reflected in
noir. Perhaps. Against this, some say Citizen Kane
counts as the first noir (also 1941). I'll go along
with that as far as much of its mood and dark canvas
(photography by the amazing Greg Toland) plus the
Rosebud mystery backdrop. Still, I've always felt
Kane is a film unto itself, its own genre.

  The Last Seduction
 is another great
 contemporary noir flick.

True, Body Heat is another favorite.
