I believe the latitudes between 25.5°N and 25.5°S are considered tropical, while
latitudes between 25.5°N and 40°N (25.5°S - 40°S) are sub-tropical.

The closer you are to the coast of a large ocean the more the sub-tropical
weather stretchs north or south (or for that matter tropical weather).

I remember looking at some of the totals, upwards of 150-200mm rain

The point is, if it was raining, it wouldn't be -33. It turns out we
have had, already, the coldest February on record with 9 days not
getting above -20C, and apparently, no end in sight.

Well, look at it this way. A good cold, COLD winter almost always means
less problems with fleas next summer. A bit of aggravation for you right
now, but a bit less for your four legged friends later.

We don't have problems with fleas here, but ticks and wasps are, and the
cold definitely slows them down.

And here on Maui, where I am currently vacationing, we have had snow!
Admittedly the snow is on the mountain, mostly at 10,000 ft asl, but it did
reach as low as the 6800 ft level, which is highly unusual. Where we are,
near the beach, this "winter storm" has produced "chilly weather," with
highs only in the mid to upper 70s F and lows dropping to the mid to low
60s. In the sun, it is always warm, and the showers are few and far
between. Still. Maui has made the national news with the snow in paradise
angle.
