With the optional short center column ($16.95 extra) it can go very close to ground level (which a previous tripod post asked about). Joe - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. i have heard it was designed on the specs for a perfect travel tripod given by some editor (herb kep ??) of a photo mag (pop photo?). Re: OT:Travel Tripod question
Has anyone tried the Velbon Maxi 343? I've only read about in Pop Photo, but it sounds to good to be true. I still don't know about a 300mm with no mount, but for anything else. If someone can give me favorable report on one, I'll probably buy one. I think they go for about $80 from B&H. Re: OT:Travel Tripod question
I, too, use the Bogen tabletop tripod and extension. I've used the legs (part 3007) as a handle for my rangefinder. Anytime I need it as a tripod, I simply unfold the legs. I've just replaced the ballhead with the Bogen 3232 monopod head, a simple affair that lets you quickly pivot between horizontal and vertical shots. Alternatively, you can buy the 3007 legs and fit it with a more substantial ballhead. My 3007 legs are new. My first set got stuck in the ballhead, and two legs snapped off when I tried to force the head off by twisting the legs. A replacement set was just $14. "Maris V. Re: OT:Travel Tripod question
Lightweight and decent are usually considered oxymoron's when applied to tripods. Gitzo used to make one the was ok, but it was god awful expensive. Other than that consider tripod substitutes like: beanbags, tabletop tripods, ball-head on a clamp, etc. If you do get a lightweight tripod, get a short one you may have to kneel to use it but it will be somewhat steady. Most bets are off with that 300 though.
