OT - This is me at THe SAINT MARKS IS DEAD book launch
I'm the one in the fancy outfit - lady with the cane is the designer of same outfit, Kristina Olitski https://annsan.smugmug.com/Misceandvids/Other-photogs-photos-of-me/n-4gPQjx/i-wpk4zwK/A (those of you on facebook avhe seen this already) The story here starts with one of my back in the day photos is in the book...and Kristina is in the book.. The book traces the history oft St Marks Place in New York's East Village, from beforeit's beginnings to the present, but with a strong emphasis on the last 50 years or so. Kirstina Olitski (formerly Kristina Gorby) had a clothing store at No 7 st. Marks Place.back inthe 60's - I've lived in the East Village since 1963 (and earlier for a year in 1959-60) and KRistina's shop was a favorite. The outfit you see me in here (the "jacket' and pants, not the blue sleeveless top) was purchased in about 1968. I had offered it to the books author (slimmer than me) to wear for the launch but she declined,fearing she might spillsomething on it which would make my friends laugh, I told her :-) ) Anyway - The book launch was a big deal here - held in the grand hall of Cooper Union - the placewas packed... before Ada Calhoun, the author, started her little intro I went up to her and she recognized me by the dress (we had only met on line before) and said she thought KRistina would be there.. One three large panels behind Ada , before the show got started, all the photos in the book plus others that were not were projected as a running slide show - including 3 more of mine... all taken on St Marks place.. since I got a free copy of the book , signed, and the photo in the book was long since paid for, I let my disappointment at not at least being told those otherthree were going to be used in that way fall by the wayside - not worth it, and kind of a kickanyway. Thencame the entertainment.. a Beastie boy plus some others - so the minute they took the stage I fled.. as did may of my generation.. and who were making equally that much noise back in the rock and punk days... I waited in the vestibule where the books were all layed out for buying and getting signed, where several boards with aknowledgements were posted (that I knocked over asit happens) forthe cacaphony in the grand hall to be over.. hoping Ada would take me to KRistina, when a woman of my age came up to me and said "I designed that outfit you are wearing" It was wonderful on som many levels! Her granddaughter was withher .. KRistina asked if I minded if Daphne took our photo. I had not brought my good camera neither had Daphne who is herself a pro photographer but her cell phone snapof us was just right... Daphne said I'd made Kristina's evening - and she certainly made mine - it was a lovely reunion though as I was mainly just a customer of hers for several years Ican't imagine she remembered that I wasme, so to speak. She was so happy to see that outfit and that I had taken such good care of itand loved it so. I told her my friends and I were heartbroken when she closed the shop - which she did in 1972 and went into wholesale... among her customers was Janis Joplin - for whomshe designed outfits Joplin wore on stage... And none of this would have happened had it not been for someone prodding me to do that Back in the Day calendar 3 years ago... PAul you jest, but somewhere I do have one... A polaroid from , I think, 1972 I bought the outfit earlier... Thanks all of youse - but the sad thing is... I wrote it better on Tuesday morning - put it on facebook - then I saw that I had spelled Daphne's last name CEDEK instgead of CEBEK on the photofile. Couldn't find a way to "replace" so deleted the photo - which, alas, deleted all I wrote. Oh my! Lovely story. Thanks for sharing Ann. I can never tell when I bought something I wear. These days, I can not even tell if the thing on me at that moment was originally mine or was one of my sons'! And my wife swears she wore that particular shirt first before we got married; that is before stone age.
