m43 lenses are still a bit limited in range, as noted elsewhere, but many are commensurate in size with the bodies. Old Frisian isn't an ancestor of English either. Old Frisian existed alongside Old English. Well, right; the name is “Old Frisian”. Since there is a modern Frisian dialect, it is in fact misleading to say that “Frisian” is one of the parents of English; should rather say “old Frisian”. -T On Mon, Jun 11, 2012 at 12:18 PM, Bob W wrote: > That doesn't make any sense. RE: OT OM-D OMG!
That doesn't make any sense. It's like saying we're descended from proto-chimps. The proto-chimps are also proto-humans, so we choose a different name for them. So proto-Frisian is also proto-English - that is, the common ancestor of each, so it has a different name. RE: OT OM-D OMG!
There is a useful tree of the Germanic language group in this pdf, page 5: <http://assets.cambridge.org/97805216/62277/excerpt/9780521662277_excerpt.pd f> From: http://www.cambridge.org/aus/catalogue/catalogue.asp?isbn=9780521717991&ss=e xc It is followed by a 'wave' diagram which attempts to overcome some of the problems of using a tree to represent language families. Nobody disagrees that English and Frisian are very closely related, but English is not descended from Frisian. It's not enough just to count vocabulary. Re: OT OM-D OMG!
Actually, if you go through an etymological dictionary and count the inheritance of English words, various flavors of Frisian are the leader by a fairly wide margin. French is right up there too. But I agree that the “bastard child” explanation, naming only two languages, is unduly limiting. There is also a heavy Scandinavian influence; on top of which, there wasn’t just one Frisian; it came in old and new, high and low, east and west flavors. -T On Mon, Jun 11, 2012 at 11:40 AM, Bob W wrote: > > It's descended from Frisian in the same way that humans are descended from > chimps. OT OM-D OMG!
Hello Boris, I am truly sorry for quoting the Editor of Better Photography magazine w/o actually checking the camera sizes. The Editor did exaggerate the size given his concern for the price and much smaller sensor of the Olympus OM-D. So here is the size comparison from camerasize.com:- Nikon D7000 132 x 105 x 77 mm Pentax K-5131 x 97 x 73 mm Olympus OM-D 121 x 90 x 42 mm I agree on the beauty of the English language Boris, and how easy it is to "twist" you into thinking you are being praised, when it could be just the opposite. I should know as I am an alumni of the University of Cambridge. But only people with British (or Kings) English can do this and not American/Canadian English speakers - too direct, plain and simple. I'd say you're slightly taller than her... I'd also be so bold as to omit the double quotes around the word "slightly". Yet I literally see your point. In fact, this kind of vagueness is what fascinates me the most about English(*) language and English culture. (*) I denote by "English" not only British, but also American, Canadian, Australian, New Zealandian, South African, etc varieties of English language and culture respectively. Without any intent to start a fight or flame I submit to the court a question - "how slightly bigger???" There are moments where Nikon D700 beats Pentax K-5 hollow, like you put it, Bipin, but it is not slightly bigger, it is great deal bigger, as much bigger as to be a show stopper for some people such as myself with rather weak wrists. Granted D7000 is not that big, but imagining the likes of Olympus E-Px cameras or Panasonic GF-1 with correspondingly small penta-prism on top does not make me think that D7000 is only slightly(*) bigger than OM-D... PhotoME reports from the EXIF that the lens on both sets has a maximum aperture of F1, which suggests his Voigtlandter Nokton 25mm f0.95 in both cases. As much is said in the name of one set, after all. http://members.iinet.net.au/~derbyc/12/12_06/12_06_noktonfun/01.htm has some eye-pulling bokeh in the upper left, and http://members.iinet.net.au/~derbyc/12/12_06/12_06_noktonfun/10.htm has bokeh just as busy as anything from the Olympus OM-D set, so I reckon it's all got the same lens out in front. regards, Anthony -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
OT OM-D OMG!
Hello Larry, just got the June issue of Better Photography magazine, where there is an excellent review of the Olympus OM-D. The PLUS points are: quick AF, good image quality from a small 17.3 x 13 mm live MOS sensor, customisability. MINUS point are: small buttons, price. Final Ratings are: Features - 13/15; Performance - 38/45; Build Quality - 14/15; Ergonomics - 17/20. OVERALL RATING 85 %. The Editor says that if you do not mind a slightly bigger size, then the Nikon D7000 beats the Olympus hollow. It goes on to say further that the cheaper Panasonic DMC- GX1 may be a better buy. People get nostalgic at its circa 1984 SLR retro design, and may buy it on impulse. Going by the Overall Rating (85%) for Camera Tests in this Mag, I would not buy it. Anything over 90% is OK. I also noted that this company (Olympus) was embroiled in a multi-million Dollar fraud recently and it will tend to recoup the loss from us gullible customers. Regards. Re: OT OM-D OMG!
Derby, on the screen, in web size files it does not look any different than your other street photography, be it m43 or Pentax or other gear you have and use. I reckon, the OMG comes from something that does not immediately show on the web size files... Specifically, I wonder about the viewfinder as I am starting to turn around and see that shooting from the screen on the camera back is not necessarily so bad an idea...
