No need, I'm on the mend. I can use my hand for typing now. I can even
curl my fingers into a loose fist! Woo hoo!

Ironically, since this mess originated in a bicycle crash, the only
exercise I've been able to do so far this week is on the stationary
bike -- even swimming hurt my injured ribcage too much. But I'm going
to try again today. Maybe even a short run.

Sorry to hear about the get off. Hopefully you'll be back in ship
shape very soon.

I was out on the bicycle earlier today, a 5 mile buzz to the next
town and back. Nothing much, but pleasant.

Get one of those voice recognition things to do your typing for
you... ;-)

Not a chance. It happened so fast even my supernaturally-fast reflexes
couldn't respond that quickly. I was in a fast left turn when the
front found a slick spot so the first things to hit were my left knee
and hand, followed by left hip, left shoulder and the left side of my
head.

Doc Lisa and a friend who's a former EMT were the first ones to reach
me after the crash, so I was in good hands from the beginning :) Lisa's
looking forward to removing my stitches tomorrow and she took my x-rays
to one of her orthopedic friends who confirmed that my fiberglass

My tiny chip off the metacarpal is so small that they had to send the
x-ray out to a specialist just to be sure it really existed. Not in the
same league as your break. I'll be running as soon as my bruised ribs

Sorry to hear about this. I worry whenever Debbie goes out on that

2007-07-30 Thread Bob W
Har! Bad luck - I hope it all gets better very soon. Were you mountain
biking or road biking? Sounds like mountain to me.

It may encourage you to hear that I started jogging again on Saturday,
and did 30 minutes of squash drills on Sunday, 4 weeks after breaking
my wrist, with no ill effects.

Let's hope you're not in the sling/cast very long. The muscle wastage
on my left arm is quite shocking, and the arm is now very noticeably
smaller that the right. I can barely lift anything with it - even a
cup of tea is a struggle - and I have no grip strength whatsoever, so
I'll be glad when I'm able to go to the gym and start lifting.

The physio's going well though and I'm starting to restore movement
quite well.

Agree about the one-handed typing! Try Ctrl-Alt-Del. It hurts.

PDML Bicycle Crash Epidemic Continues (was: Update from Colorado)

2007-07-29 Thread Mark Roberts
Went down hard in the rain on Thursday. Started raining part way
through the ride and lost the front wheel without warning (isn't that
always the way with low-side crashes -- not that it's possible to
high-side a bicycle as far as I know...)

Anyway, no really bad injuries. Chipped the end of the 5th metacarpal
on my left hand (and bruised virtually every muscle in the hand). Lotsa
road rash on the left knee. Bruised hip & shoulder. VERY battered (but
not broken) ribs. 8 stitches on forehead over left eye. Helmet probably
saved me from serious head injuries. It's in the trash now.

So I spent Thursday afternoon in the emergency room & didn't climb
LaPlata on Friday (weather would have scuttled that anyway.)

Back in the Burgh now and doing quite well. Hope to be able to resume
running in a few days and biking as soon as my hand's out of the
splint/cast.

So you won't hear much from me for a bit: This one-handed typing sucks!
