Re: Fw: PESO: Breaching Whale
Thanks, Jack and Frank. Yes, it was taken with continuous shutter, high speed. If you look at the PESO I posted with 7 images showing the sequence of the breach, you can see that this image is one of the 7. http://photo.net/photodb/folder?folder_id=1049619 Dan Matyola http://www.pentaxphotogallery.com/danieljmatyola On Sat, Mar 2, 2013 at 1:51 PM, Jack Davis wrote: > > > > - Forwarded Message - > From: Jack Davis > To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List > Sent: Saturday, March 2, 2013 10:51 AM > Subject: Re: PESO: Breaching Whale > > > Continuous shutter? > > Jack ;-)) > > > - Original Message - > From: "knarftheria...@gmail.com" > To: ""Pentax-Discuss Mail List"" > Cc: > Sent: Saturday, March 2, 2013 9:58 AM > Subject: Re: PESO: Breaching Whale > > What is this, 1995? > > ;-) > > cheers, > frank > > --- Original Message --- > > From: Jack Davis > Sent: March 2, 2013 3/2/13 > To: "Pentax-Discuss Mail List" > Subject: Re: PESO: Breaching Whale > > Enjoyed the sequence, Dan. > Good use of motor drive. > > Jack > > > > From: Daniel J. Re: PESO: Breaching Whale
Thanks for your comments, Aahz, Jack and Bob. The shutter speed was 1/320, and the aperture f7. Because when never knows where the whale will rise, a bit of DoF is needed, but the speed has to be enough to stop blur from moving the camera quickly and from the motion of the whale. Looks very close to shore, too. We have great whale watching not far from here, just off the coast of Kaikoura where there's a deep trench in the ocean. Boats and I don't get along well so I'd just buy the postcard. After I made my post I wondered if you even had the ability for real photo editing. I look forward to seeing what other frothy goodness you caught this afternoon. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from i4est -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: PESO: Breaching Whale
I think I do, Larry. I took hundreds of exposures this afternoon, and did a "quick and dirty" clean-up of this one in PS a few minutes ago, just to get an idea of what was there. As you can see, the weather was not ideal. There were heavy rains this afternoon throughout Hawaii, although almost none where we are staying, in the rain shadow of the 10, 023 foot volcano northeast of here, Haleakala. During our whale watch on the Pacific this afternoon, it was cloudy and drizzling from time to time. The whales were quite active, but the catamaran was bouncing around quite a bit in the gusty seas, and the backgrounds, as you can see, were rather drab. That being said, I am very happy with this image, and I will try to improve it a bit more. Thanks very much for you comments on cropping the image, which I think are very helpful. Do you have the resolution to crop it so that the whale is pretty much in the upper right corner so that a LOT more of the photo is whale and a lot less is water and sky? Cloudy skies and water aren't nearly as interesting as the whale. > > Dan Matyola > http://www.pentaxphotogallery.com/danieljmatyola > > -- > PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List > PDML@pdml.net > http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net > to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow > the directions. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from i4est -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
