Or maybe not.

I don't think I was much older than that when I learned you could pinch
a candle out without noticeable pain if you licked your thumb and
forefinger first.

... or at least no pain to the fingers.

My dad eventually got tired of it and applied corrective stimulus to my

Works for me... Both as a link and as a photograph.

Speaking of which, when I was a little kid, I did touch it. In fact,
I've let the match burn until it burned my fingers. Had to wait several
years for fear to pass until I could light the gas stove with the match
as I had a strong fear that it will burn me again...

I'll start with: I'd long since forgotten who had posted...
I was reacting from a long-standing "pet-peeve." I wasn't directing my
comments at you.
It's hard to explain...I was reacting to what Frank's comments were, and it
just uncovered some old feelings (there's that word again! :~)

Absolutely so! I agree. You should have.
I wasn't commenting on YOUR response to his image, I was responding to a
hypothetical person who would ask, "What does that make you feel when you look
at it?" and that's not what you said or meant at all.

No, I know that. It's true, I do it myself...
My gut-feel reaction was an unfair exposition of my own biases, and my
response was out of line.

Keith, I think you misunderstood me. When I looked at the picture I
*felt* certain emotions. These emotions are something that I don't
*usually feel* when look at the photograph. Therefore I decided that I
should mention that perhaps Frank did not intend for me to *feel* the
emotions, but nevertheless I did feel that way.

Also, do you want it or not but when you make a photograph you mix in a
bit of yourself and further when you show it to the public you expose
that little bit along the way. Even the most primitive - "me and the

Sh*e*t!

Why do people always have to EXPLAIN what they do?

Photography, to me, has always been my way of recording, mainly for MYSELF,
what I see from time to time, and as a memory prompter of a slice of time...

If I should happen to share it with someone, well, that someone might just sit
back, metaphorically speaking, and enjoy themselves ~ perhaps even wonder what
THEY might have felt had they been there at that very moment.
Maybe do a lot of H-ing.

But no, they have to ANALYZE it, and try to figure out what YOU felt!

Who knows or cares? If you feel nothing in particular, walk on, my
friend...there's a lot more to look at in this world than what once moved me
to record it's image.

But, not baring your soul somehow offends these folks, who just aren't willing
to accept a "Who knows" shrug...

Gallic-ly speaking... Eh... So What. ;-)

Be well, Frank.

I don't know what I was trying to say. In fact, I always get a bit
confused when people ask me what I'm trying to say with a photo. If I
could put it in words, I likely wouldn't have taken the photo! ;-)

Or, to put it another way, when I take a photo, I'm just reacting to
something I see. I'm just recording something that, for whatever
reason, appeals to me or otherwise moves me. I'm not saying anything.

At least I don't think so...

In any event, thanks for you comments!

Actually, it does look like a chicken taking a drink. :-)

See those white things? One below chicken (what it would be drinking?) and
one besides the chicken? I think those are little pumpkins/squashes,
considering the time of year. What the black stuff is, I don't know. Probably
just

straight from your heart, whether it's full of laughter, or full of
angst. At the same time, this pic is nothing more than a poorly framed
shot of an everyday scene, and yet is also a truly awe-inspiring piece
of art that displays true creativity and passion for life.

Some would say I'm fulla shit, but honestly mate - that's a lovely
piece. Well done.

Re: PESO - candle experiment

2006-09-25 Thread Russell Kerstetter
Thankyou for your comments:

Boris: cropping too tight is something that I am struggling to
overcome as I am learing to shoot (I over-crop in-camera). I think
that my sub-consious sees the tiny image in the tiny view finder and
thinks that I need to be closer in order for the subject to be clearly
seen or something equally silly.

Rick: I took quite a few shots (this being the first) because I kept
getting annoyed that the flames would not 'be the same', and in the
end I chose this one for teh very reason that you mentioned.

Godfrey: It is interesting that you would say that. all my
thumbnails are cropped square, and just last night one of my friends
(not on the list) told me he thought several of my pictures made more
interesting compositions as the square thumbnails. When I went back
to look at them that way, this picture was the first one to jump out
at me as wanting to be square. Maybe tonight I will recrop and
repost..

thanks again for your input

Russel, I think it is too tight from the top. Flames need air to keep
burning... Otherwise - although common, this is very well done.
