Must be a pretty stout bridge to put up with all those impacts.
I’ve seen a few around here where they had to rebuild the bridge.

All I can say is "WOW!"

That's the farthest I've ever seen an 18 wheeler get stuck under there. Usually
they tried to slly squeeze under there and got stuck**.

Gregson is a one way street & they get down to where the bridge is and can't
make the tight turn left onto W. Peabody St.

One of the problems is commercial traffic from Main St turns south on Gregson to
get out of downtown, and there are no signs on Main St. warning drivers about
the low bridge BEFORE they make the turn.

https://www.google.com/maps/@36.0001272,-78.9092094,3a,75y,228.86h,84.16t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sZgxawPsag0UY-fpmd-eFlw!2e0!7i16384!8i8192

But that guy was not only ignoring the bridge warnings, he was FLYING. The speed
limit through there is only 25 mph (40 kmph) and he had to have been doing at
least 50.

Re: PESO: Shaky Bridge

2019-09-10 Thread John

I've actually seen them try that on the 11'8" bridge in the video.

Where I went to High School is about 3 blocks north of where that bridge is
located. My father's office was about 4 blocks south of there.

Before I had a driver's license, I'd walk down to his office every day after
school to catch a ride home with him when he got off work. I walked up Gregson
Street almost every day on the way to my father's office (actually to where his
car was parked so I could dump off my books).

One time, an 18 wheeler got stuck under there & they were trying to grease the
roof back it out without tearing it up any more than it already was, but it
wasn't working.

Finally, some smart-Alec kid asked them why they didn't just let the air out of
the trailer tires to lower the trailer.

I wish I could say I was that smart-Alec kid, but I'm not that smart.

Re: PESO: Shaky Bridge

2019-09-08 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
That is not the problem with our bridge. The Shaky Bridge goes OVER
the railroad tracks, rather than under the bridge. the overhead height is
unlimited, but the bridge is narrow, and the approaches are not straight.
The limitations are the weight-bearing capacity of the tiny bridge and the
fact that there is no room to turn entering and leaving the bridge.

This could be fixed with signage.  There's a low underpass on the former

tractor trailers used to regularly get their trailers either scalped or
stuck.  Signs were place at several locations to warn of the impending
doom, and they seem to have worked.

So, you appear to have more sensible truck drivers or they at least can
read. We have here in Cologne what the locals call the "idiots' bridge"
which regularly gets hit by trucks, The council have tried it all:
signs, blinking lights, the lot. Has alleviated the problem somewhat but
there is still the occasional champion who gets stuck.

Next, we've had to restrict one of the two motorway bridges across the
Rhine to trucks above 3.5 tons for the time it takes to build a new one.
Signs were happily ignored, mainly by foreign drivers. So where cameras
to fine the offenders which were ignored again because perpetrators were
out of the country long before they could be caught. In the end, they
had to install weighbridges and automatic barriers. Even those are
sometimes crashed through but at least they sort out most of them now.

Re: PESO: Shaky Bridge

2019-09-07 Thread P. J. Alling
This could be fixed with signage.  There's a low underpass on the former
NY, NH, and Hartford, tracks where it crosses US1 in Madison CT, where
tractor trailers used to regularly get their trailers either scalped or
stuck.  Signs were place at several locations to warn of the impending
doom, and they seem to have worked.  Hasn't been a stuck or wrecked
trailer at that location in several years.

realized they could not cross the bridge. This could cause huge back-ups.

Re: PESO: Shaky Bridge

2019-08-30 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, John.

The bridge was build when the tracks below belonged to the New Jersey
Central Railroad Co. When that entity went bankrupt, the tracks were given
to NJ Transit, but the latter never took ownership of the bridge. As a
result, maintenance has been neglected for decades, as the state, the
township, NJ Transit and the Department of transportation argue over who
should pay for replacing the bridge.

Every day, two commuter trains pass under the bridge is each direction, in
addition to occasional freight trains. Most trains on the Raritan Valley
line no longer come this far, but turn around in Raritan Borough, a few
miles to the east.

Re: PESO: Shaky Bridge

I believe New Jersey has a certain history regarding bridge closures 8^)

This one looks like it maybe predates the New Jersey Department of
Transportation. I suspect it was built back before the automobile replaced the
horse & carriage; perfectly adequate in its day, but no match for modern road
behemoths.

Nicely documented. Probably end up in the local library's historical
