Re: PESO - Water Lily in the Rain 2

2016-09-05 Thread John

You might try a horizontal crop from the center. Left boundary just
enough to keep the ring from the raindrop on the left; right and lower
boundary to keep the leaf just below the flower; and whatever top
boundary you need to balance it.

That gives you a visual triangle from the three distinct raindrop
ripples with the flower at the lower right apex.

The cropped version has a stronger composition and pleases the eye, but it
loses the feeling of "in the rain" that the first has.

Was it good luck or good planning to get the ripples spreading out from

Love the portion of this scene including the lily. That portion alone,

Thanks, Bob and Don.

Don, I see the spot also. It was really there, in the water. I
thought about cloning it out, but then I looked at all the
imperfections in the lily pads, and decided once I go down that road,
I might never stop.

eliminating some of the dark water might help the image.

Re: PESO: Water lily IV

2006-08-14 Thread Jack Davis
Yeah, we discussed the blown out blossoms. Positive film exposure is
fine, it's my wonderful little flatbed scanner. Why doesn't that bother
me on an example scan such as this?
Because of there being two blossoms, the center area placement felt ok
to me.
I recently put up a lily shot called "Leggy Lilies" in which I cropped
it as a vertical, placing the blossoms at the top and allowing the
stems to represent legs. That was too unique for someone and a more
straightforward squared off crop was suggested.
Simply verifies the range of viewer tastes.
Comments are appreciated.

Jack

Re: PESO: Water lily IV

2006-08-14 Thread P. J. Alling
The composition doesn't grab me. The flowers are too centered, maybe
cropping a bit off of one edge, or if you want it centered a somewhat
tighter crop. The contrast seems to be a bit too high for the subject
matter.

Re: PESO: Water lily IV

2006-08-12 Thread Jack Davis
Marnie, both you and Bruce are right that the blossom is somewhat blown
out.
When I put it up I touched it slightly with the burn tool, but didn't
like the total of what was happening, so backed off.
Being a MF positive, the scan was done on my cheapy flat bed.
I just checked the film and find the exposure ideal..by my standards.

Re: PESO: Water lily IV

2006-08-12 Thread Jack Davis
It is the result of the scan. Done on my cheapy flat bed.
When I put it up I fiddled a bit with the burn tool, but it wasn't
happening, so gave it up.
Thanks, again for comments.

Thanks, Bruce.
I view this as your standard, ordinary, "pretty" shot the impact of
which increases with size.
A scene that neither offends nor excites almost no one.

Very pretty. Striking leaves. I echo, though, what Bruce said, the larger
flower looks a bit blown out. So maybe that looks better larger.

This is a shot that I would like to see bigger. I'm suspecting that
it is quite striking when viewed like that. It also seems to be a bit
blown out in the flower - don't know if this is the result of the scan
or as shot. Anyways, I like it with those two caveats.
