I don't really like HDR stuff, it looks wrong to me. Audio people complain about much the same thing: the over-use of compression, which lets you hear everything, even in the car, but is tiring on the ear. I wonder how much is just because we got used to how film renders light... pictures like these two http://www.photosight.org/photo.php?photoid=46433&ref=author&refid=999 http://www.photosight.org/photo.php?photoid=41626&ref=author&refid=999 would not have surprised painters living before photography any more than photography did. Most examples now over-use it for effect, but I can imagine that milder versions will creep in slowly, as one more tool for better contrast control in colour. I come down on the side of those who like this. It's a pretty picture. Perfect symmetry, wonderful light. Is it too perfect? Perhaps, but there's something interesting about that in itself. I much prefer Version 2 - seems like more natural lighting, the other one looks as if someone has walked around with a flash and illuminated the scene as they went, resulting in an almost cartoon effect. High Dynamic Range. You capture multiple shots, identical apart from shutter speed. The shutter speed is varied to give a range of exposures from 1-2 stops under to 1-2 stops over in 1 stop increments (although I prefer 1/2 stop increments). These are then blended in photoshop and the result is a 32 bit file which can't be displayed or printed as the dynamic range is too great for the average monitor or print media. Converting the file back into a 16 bit file allows you to tweak it to show hightlight and shado detail, but the adjustments are quite difficult to do if you want to keep it looking relatively natural. PESO- merge to HDR (OT-Surreal phot)
I actually like it. Printed out on watercolor paper I bet it would look spectacular, but not as a photograph per say. It makes the photo look more like a painting and less like a photo. He is an *ist user, and a nice guy ;-) What struck me, is that there is a thin line between HDR used for a photographic purpose, and where it is just a bad taste effect.
