Thanks Boris. The height is just right for me so that I can view it
without scrolling, on my macbook. Maybe I will have to go to the
small/large method... but that won't be for a while.

I am not sure which crop I prefer, I like the square, but I keep
trying to look to the sky. And yes the house is a fair bit more
noticeable, although I think the increased contrast is definatly
better. Thanks for your input contrary or otherwise :)

Re: PESO - A Chilly Afternoon

2007-04-12 Thread Russell Kerstetter
Thanks Marnie,

I one thing I struggled with in this was the contrast, I felt that too
much gave it too much 'oomph' to let it still be moody, and I guess
that too much 'do nothing sky' makes it just blah. Thanks for your
input.

2007-04-12 Thread Russell Kerstetter
Markus,
I forgot to answer your question earlier today. I actually did shoot
a horizontal after I shot the vertical, but I do not like it. It is
shot at 50mm where this one is 200, and there are a *lot* more houses
in the horizontal. When I originally took the shot, I envisioned it
being vertical, so when I followed up with the horizontal I did not
put much thought into it. Why did I see it that way? I am not sure
:)

It is big enough and bright enough for me. I think there is too much
sky that has nothing in it. So I would crop it a bit differently.
Take most of it off and go for a more square shot. With that kind of

Interesting idea, well captured, but the overall image just isn't
gripping enough. It might be better bigger.

Hi Russell
I agree with William here.
Just curious: Why did you not choose landscape mode here?
Greetings

Does nothing for me.

It could be a bit bigger, though you would have to lose the navigation links

Perhaps a bit flat.

Nice in its moody way.

Perfect for this computer's 1280x800 monitor.

That's an artistic question. If you had a high-key
photo in mind, no. If you wanted it misty and moody,
yes. If you wanted it dark and dreary and depressing,
it's too bright.

Hmm. It's kinda flat, but has an interesting and delicate texture.
I'm not exactly sure where to go with it, it would seem to me that
the style begs a very large print with lots of subtle texture. On the
web rez image, it looks a little mushy and is lacking in punch to get
my attention.

> 2) Is big enough, or just right?

The size is about right for a web page image. ON a large screen (mine
is the Cinema Display 23") it could be half again as tall, but then
it would be a pain on a smaller screen.

> 3) Is it bright enough?

It looks flat and dull on the middle gray surround. Put a thin white-
black border around it, darken the surround by half and it looks a
lot nicer. Make the surround white with the border and it needs a
touch more contrast.

The page presentation looks a bit of a jumble with little tiny link
words strewn around the image. Hard to see against the gray and
difficult to hit accurately.

2007-04-11 Thread Jack Davis
Russell, I think you would be hard pressed to greatly change the
existing image impression. Maybe a bit of cropping of the top, cloning
out the structure peeking through the foliage on the right and giving
it more definition with a contrast/saturation bump and, maybe, a touch
of sharpening(???).
I actually have doubts as to the viability of the image.

http://www.avocadohead.com/piclinks/IMGP2959.html

There are several types of comments I am looking for:

1) The typical 'good, bad and ugly' comments as well as constructive criticism.

2) Is big enough, or just right?

3) Is it bright enough?

Thanks for looking.
