I agree, the little bit of color makes a big difference.

OT because it's with my phone cam. I know I've shown too many bike by
the lake shots, but it was such a lovely ride to work this morning
(at least the first couple km along the lake), I couldn't resist.

And I must say, I'm quite impressed with the resolution on this one;
I've got it as my desktop background and it's surprisingly sharp and
detailed:

I cannot disagree with Bruce, but I do do think you could start with a

to catch it with my camera (a larger variant is available in the same

But I'm uncertain of my choices and I would love some feedback:

* Does the large tree trunk on the left work as a foreground?
I've tried to use it both to show how the visibility degrades as you
go deeper into the scene; plus together with the next tree on the
right, to frame the narrow path.

* Then I've chosen to reduce the saturation, so that only hints of
green and brown (from the leaves) remain visible.

Thanks for the comments,

that usual so many days in a row...)

However, because I kind of like the overall atmosphere, I've tried
to catch it with my camera (a larger variant is available in the same
folder):

 http://data.volution.ro/ciprian/bdf753de58c560bc/0cb3ba63549b8029/variant-a--x800.jpg

Thanks for the comments,
Ciprian.

P.S.: The picture was taken with my old Fuji S5200 at ISO 100,
thus please ignore the noise and lack of sharpness.

PESO Misty days

Re: PESO Misty days

2014-01-09 Thread Bruce
For me, the issue with this shot is that it is just not quite enough...there
needs to be something more to push it beyond ordinary. Either more mist or
some interesting filtered light or a change in perspective to really draw me
in. Lots of potential but not quite there. I can't begin to tell you how many
'not quite there' shots that I have taken. But it is the shooting and learning
that we do that helps us to improve.

I like misty / foggy mornings like that. You must have a very nice view from
there.

One of these days I'll visit Brisbane. How are you (collectively) recovering

RE: PESO - Misty this morning!

2012-04-23 Thread John Coyle
Thanks David, Bob W., Bob S., JCO, Dan, and knarf for looking.
JCO, the vignetting is inherent in the lens design: I didn't crop this one from
the full
frame at all,.
David, I was never seriously affected by the floods, my suburb is pretty well
recovered,
but some areas are still being put back together - often due to problems with
insurance
policies not being paid out. It's amazing how many definitions of 'flood'
there are
according to the insurers!
The house on top of the cliff is a very desirable residence, and the price
reflects it.
It has views which can never be built out.
For those who may not have seen it before, here's a link to a panorama I made
some four
years ago from the deck of my apartment - and yes, it is a beautiful view,
especially in
fine weather.
http://www.members.iinet.net.au/~jco...@iinet.net.au/PESO_010.html

Panning further to the right gives a terrific view of the city, too.

PESO Misty Morning

2010-06-29 Thread eckinator
Going through the photos from my 2005 trip to Malaysia, this is one of
my faves. A misty morning on the East bank of Lemanak River, Sarawak,
Borneo, Malaysia as seen from the Batang Ai Iban longhouse where we
spent the night drinking positively excellent Iban moonshine with zero
hangover factor and boy, was I ever loaded. I still feel a bit bad for
having gone there and watch them put on a show for rich Westerners
but it was an amazing insight nonetheless so I'm glad I didn't have
those qualms before leaving or I might not have booked that
arrangement. The trip was three weeks with the first week guided and
the other two spent backpacking and I hope to go to Malaysia again
some day, it is a beautiful country, the people are friendly and very
very hospitable and the food is awesome, you can eat all kinds of
super spicy hot food but you will always still taste something and not
just feel your mouth burn. And their breakfast, Nasi Lemak, is a great
start into a day in the weather there. Some days I drank as much as 9
liters before needing to heed nature's call. It is all one huge
sweatbox to me.

2010/6/30 Rick Womer rwomer1...@yahoo.com:

Ecke, apart from making me feel steamy and sweaty (which I don't need, after
several days of 30C+ in Philly), this shot doesn't grab me.  It lacks a
center of interest, or anything to lead the eye through it.

Never seen that in it either, to be frank - to me it is just
athmospheric and (or so I hope for others to think, too) fairly good
at that. Of course I am biased, having the visual memories to go with
it. At any rate I appreciate your input and will give it some thought

Funny, but I kept thinking about you when I was processing this. Kept

Thanks for the kind words!

I tried getting in touch with a feeling about this, but have to say,
'very mysterious' is all I'm left with.
Maybe that's enough.(?)

I agree - perhaps that, along with the fact that the mist only frosted
the top half of the bus shelter (leaving the figure's bottom 1/2
relatively sharp) are why I'm ambivalent about it (I continue to
vacillate).

It's centred because I chopped off a huge chunk of the right side of
the frame: A great hunking SUV that I thought looked good in the
viewfinder looked stupid in the photo, so out it went. I really
didn't want to crop from the left to compensate, as I didn't want to
lose that sidewalk - to me that's an important element of the photo.

So, despite the kudos, so far this, to me, is an almost there photo,
one that's not bad, but not as good as I'd like it to be, with little
or no way to fix it up without degrading it.

Damn, I hate that!!!

;-)

cheers,
frank

That shape doesn't bother me that much - not as much as the bullseye
effect (see my response to Peter).

It ~is~ frustrating, though. Almost there, but not quite.
