The person on the pillar is flesh and blood. Not a buddy, just one of
four skiers who got to the peak right ahead of me. His girlfriend
called out to make him stretch his arms for the pose.

It used to be a cable car from one of the mines. It was located just
above the nearest building on the left. I think mining stopped there
some time in the early sixties. But I feel that it's very much part of
the history of the place. It's kind of bizarre, all these now historic
items present. I think the locals (yeah, there are long-term residents
and even some natives up here) take a bit of pride in whatever is
visible of the mining history here.

When I arrived, the bloke was already on the pillar. I asked his
girlfriend if she think he would mind having his picture taken. She
just grinned and said no problem, and then began giving him
directions. No cues from me! :-)

Wonderful young people, btw. All four of them were geology students
taking courses at the university up here.
