That’s a nice shot! I was on Maui for a 5-day conference several years ago,
but was not in a place where I could include Haleakala in a sunset pic.

I did visit the summit, though—it almost seemed an alien planet. This is a shot
into the summit crater. (From what I read, it is not considered a volcanic
caldera because non-volcanic events (like floods) have modified it extensively).

For scale, about 1/3 in from the right edge of the pic and 1/10 up from the
bottom is a bluish-white dot. That is a pair of hikers.

PESO: Sunset Glow

2023-02-23 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Some photographer wiser than me gave me some curious advice: when you are
shooting a scene, turn around and look in the other direction; you may be
surprised by what you see.

I was on the beach on Maui, shooting another beautiful sunset. While
moving around to get some foreground interest in my sunset shot, I glanced
eastward, and noticed that Haleakala volcano was bathed in the warm glow of
the setting sun, and the astronomical observatories near the summit could
be seen, even from the beach. The resulting image is a bit unorthodox, but
somehow I like the result:

Fortunately my boss was understanding when I told him I had to play with my
camera for a few minutes.

And in case folks didn’t figure it out, the Driscoll’s plant I was at was in
the town of Aromas, the sunset didn’t have any particular smell.

Thanks. It was a nice night. The local swing dance recently changed
from every Sunday to the second Saturday of the month and attendance has
been rather light, however almost everyone that showed up was at least a
pretty good dancer. Also, unusually for this area, there were more
followers than leaders so I danced pretty much every song.

Hi John -

There's an HDR layer in the mix in that image, just to open up the
shadows a bit. I almost always run things through Photomatix with the
settings dialed back just enough to open up the shadows and enhance
local contrast a little. That is usually one of the first layers that I
blend into the image.

The best HDR is when the viewer can't tell.

Did you have to use HDR? I can't tell.

The best HDR is when the viewer can't tell.

Comments appreciated.

Spent a couple days in Chicago and decide to travel light and took only
the Q7 and lenses. Much easier to tote around the Q and 4 lenses than
the K1 and a single lense (or even the K3). Q7 image quality, even in
low light, is not bad at all IMO.

Great shot, I love how the wide angle accentuates the shape of the
canoe. The bright glow between the knees of the two people is rather
distracting to me. I'd be tempted to crop to the left of the left most
person and as much off the top as needed to maintain your aspect ratio.
That would also get rid of a lot of empty sky that doesn't really
contribute to the image. You could also, trim a skosh off the left,
leaving just enough of the trunk to frame the image.

Re: PESO: Sunset Flight

2014-08-04 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Don.

I have attended the event three times no (besides one time when I
worked as a volunteer parking attendant on behalf of the local fire
company). I now know when to get there, where to stand, and what to
expect, so it is easier and more effective than the first time I went
there with my camera.

I also took a lot of images of the people watching and photographing
the event. I have not really processes them yet, but hope to do so,
either as PESOs or one or two GESOs.

Good timing on that.. wonder if you would have any luck lightening the

2014-08-02 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Toralf!

The balloon was blocking the setting sun, and as it started to rise
into the air, I noticed that the sun was going to "pop out" from
behind the balloon, and I tried to get a backlit shot and then one
with as much of the sun as I could include, without blowing everything
out completely.

Re: PESO: Sunset at Lake Wanaka

2014-06-20 Thread David Mann
Thanks to everyone who looked, I'm glad you liked it.

That was the only sunset I got to see during the whole trip as I was going to
bed early every night (had to get up early in the mornings).

The stitching was done in Photoshop, nothing special done in that regard. I'm
not usually so fond of panoramas that are this wide but I couldn't resist all
that cloud.

I'll do a small gallery at some stage...

Cheers,
Dave
