The light is no harsher than the landscape. Aahz, From the orientation of the shadow, the sun was almost overhead. When traveling, sometimes you take what you can get, But with a dawn or dusk lit scene, this image would move out of the documentary category and into a fine outdoor art category. Its taken me many years to really appreciate the quality of light in my images and there are many times I just won't take a shot knowing the current light will degrade what could otherwise be a good/great image. I doubt very much that any climbing of Spider rock is allowed. It is an important part of Navajo folklore and history and though a National Monument, it is on Navajo Nation land. PESO: Squaw Rock Park
Where I live, there is a peninsula that has a park at the point. This point connects to a nearby island via a sandbar. When the tide is low, the bar is exposed and you can walk across it to the other island. Nice capture, but it could do without the blackline on the RH horizon. Looks like a scene that would benefit from a split neutral density filter. Kenneth Waller - Original Message - From: P. J. That's a breakwater with a small lighthouse on the end of it. Nicely visible in the full size image. Kenneth Waller wrote: Nice capture, but it could do without the blackline on the RH horizon. Nice shot. I'd crop out the rock on the right side, but thats just me. The lighting is nice an soothing. To bad there is not a smooch more detail in the shadows Dave Brooks My first PESO: http://folk.uio.no/mdahl/Osthasselstrand/Rock.jpg Pentax *ist DS, DA16-45 at 28mm, 1/125 @ f/13, ISO 400 Best regards, /Morten
Re: PESO - The Rock
It has potential but as you've posted it doesn't do much for me. Perhaps two exposures, one correct for the rock one correct for the sky/background? But some of the rock shadows are a little too dark. I don't know if you PS, but using the Shadow/Highlight, you could lighten the shadows a tad and I think that would help a lot -- just a little more detail. Marnie aka Doe
Re: PESO - The Rock
Hi Morten, nice to see another Norwegian on the List. You have captured the rock in a very nice light, but it looks like the contrast was a bit rough. Like others, I too think it's a bit too dark in the shadows. The upside is that the clouds and highlights are rendered nicely. I suspect you have a great deal more shadow detail in the original file, which you can bring out by using the Curves tool in Photoshop. Btw, Do you shoot raw or jpeg?
