Re: Adorama has Pentax 17-70 at astoundingly low price.
That price is really quite good. I paid a flat $500 for my copy in January, 2014. This has been my go to lens when using a normal zoom. I find my copy to be excellent when stopped down to f8 or more. It is somewhat soft at f4, improves significantly at 5.6 and is excellent at f8. It is softer than 16-45 f4 (which is really excellent) at f4 and f5.6, but is on par with it at f8. In terms of chromatic aberration, the 17-70 is better than the 16-45 at all apertures, IMO. The silent operation of the 17-70 is really nice. It's not a dream lens by any measure but a good workhorse. Still looking for the dream lens. Mark On 10/21/2015 6:44 PM, P.J. Alling wrote: The reviews at Adorama are all 4 and 5 star. I had one on loan from Pentax marketing. It was excellent, but I suppose it might have been cherry picked. had a look at the Sigma 17-70 2.8-4 and the Pentax 17-70 4 today. The Pentax unit was much much faster than the last unit for AF, about on par with any of my other lenses but much quieter. The Sigma was $100 more and offered a 7 year warranty and f2.8 at the wide open end, and AF was faster than the Pentax but i decided to go with the Pentax. The sharpness looked a bit nicer, is lighter and the focus ring moves the correct way. Most reviews of that lens seem to indicate that it focuses pretty fast, so I think there's probably something wrong with the copy you've got. I'd go back to the store and exchange it. Yes this was quiet, which is fine but way to slow, 2-3 seconds to focus on a static object is pretty bad i have to say. Re: Pentax 17-70 f4 and SDM motor question
Hi David - I just tested my 17-70 @ 50mm indoors in dim light on a K-3. I tried counting off the seconds "one-thousand-one..." but never got beyond "thous" usually stopped a "one..." I can try it on a K-5 tonight, but mine is very fast. And quiet. Re: Pentax 17-70 f4 and SDM motor question
What kind of light was illuminating your subject? How contrasty was it? Try AF outdoors. When working correctly on the K20D, SDM can focus in something like 0.2 seconds. But in reduced light you can count on many seconds -- while the smile fades from your portrait subject ... This all improves quite noticeably on the K-3. But really low light still causes problems that I solve by switching to MF. On Wed, Mar 19, 2014 at 6:43 PM, David J Brooks wrote: > Could be, i mostly tried it at 650-70 length. Well, the DA* 50-135mm SDM is probably the slowest AF lens on Earth, gaining it the nickname of "the sloth". Generally speaking, SDM lenses are slower than both screw-driven ad DC Pentax AF lenses, so the DA 17-70mm is a good candidate for being another slow-AF lens. However, I own it and I don't find it THAT slow as you pointed out. There is however another problem I saw on several samples of that lens and is the almost impossibility to autofocus above 50mm focal length, hunting forever while you try & find the focus. At the bottom of the hill below BOSE "on the mountain". When the New York office called and told us to find the part "somewhere" in the in-house repairs or unpack a new unit from the warehouse, we knew someone had gone up the chain to get action on OUR lousy supply chain. This was back in the day when we had over 150 various transistors, bins of resistors, capacitors, diodes that we chose from to replace on a failed circuit board, well before some bean counters realized it was less expensive to replace the circuit boards when you considered man hours wasted on troubleshooting and making a component repair on an unit that manufacturing costs were just over the repair costs. That's why these days you are frequently advised (APPLE, are you listening?) to replace a unit out of warranty rather than repair it. At your expense, of course. Re: Pentax 17-70 repair -- on PARTS HOLD
Unfortunately not a new phenomenon. I ran into this years ago when the PZ1P was still current. I needed the film advance motor to be replaced. I was told by Pentax repair in Colorado that they had no replacement available & had no idea when one was due. After waiting a few months I told them to replace the body (it was still under warranty) and viola a replacement motor magically found its way into my PZ1P ! Kenneth Waller http://www.pentaxphotogallery.com/kennethwaller - Original Message - From: "Igor Roshchin" Subject: Pentax 17-70 repair -- on PARTS HOLD Earlier this month, I sent my 17-70/4 zoom for repair (while it was still under warranty, - before the end of the 1st year). It had problems focusing on the long end of the focal length, - AF (and I couldn't get the focus confirmation when focusing manually). I just spoke with the service center, and they told me that they are waiting for the parts (the circuit board), and Pentax has no ETA for its arrival. I also spoke with the Pentax Support, but they haven't given any estimates either. 1. I wonder what is happening with PEntax that they don't have even ETA for their parts. 2. I wonder if this problem (or more likely, - the absence of the circuit boards) can be related to the infamous SDM problem. Re: Pentax 17-70 repair -- on PARTS HOLD
I had the same response (no ETA for parts) when I sent my k-7 in for repair about a year ago. It needed a new circuit board, too, iirc... In the end, it took about 6 weeks. (Longer than the length of time I had owned the camera at that point.) I hope you have better luck. -c On Mon, Nov 29, 2010 at 2:12 PM, Igor Roshchin wrote: > > Earlier this month, I sent my 17-70/4 zoom for repair (while it was still > under warranty, - before the end of the 1st year). > It had problems focusing on the long end of the focal length, - > AF (and I couldn't get the focus confirmation when focusing manually). > > I just spoke with the service center, and they told me that > they are waiting for the parts (the circuit board), and Pentax > has no ETA for its arrival. > I also spoke with the Pentax Support, but they haven't given any > estimates either. > > 1. Pentax 17-70 Bargian at Amazon.

Re: I am waiting for a Pentax 17-35mm f/:2.8 FA IF ED AL etc....
Hi Nicolas, I don't understand your logic very well. You say you are a young student so the price of the new MZ-S is disappointing to you, but then you say you are waiting for an 17-35mm f2.8??? Did you ever look at the price tickets of these beasts? Not to mention their size and weight. Since you have the luck to live in France, where the second hand market is extraordinary cheap, I would suggest completing your MZ-3, FA35mmf2, FA43mmf1.9, FA85mm1.4 setup with for exemple: M28mm f2.0 215gr., 49mm filter like your 35mm, FNAC price 530FF A20mm f2.8 245gr., 67mm filter like your 85mm, FNAC price 1590FF And since you are not very happy with your 43mm, exchange it for: M15mmf3.5 FNAC price 870FF and an M50mm f1.4 FNAC price 300FF, and take a weekend in Nice with the change. Now if you can't take good pictures with that setup, change to Nikon, because it's not possible to take a bad picture with a Nikon, as we all know :-). No seriously A) the weight difference makes photography much more comfortable, especially with compact reflex bodies, and that's what Pentax is all about. B) in most cased you don't want AF with wideangles, the results are just better when focussed manually. It is diffucult to focus a wideangle, but even more for an AF system then for an eye. Our brain can guess at what would be the sharpest position, an AF system can't. And when you photograph from a tripod, it's a real pain to have any AF system select what you want with a wideangle. C) in a lot of cases you don't want a zoom either, because a good depth of field scale is a very important accessory for wide angle photography. (When used properly, understanding that the DOF marks show the limit of "acceptable" UNsharpness on a small print, and certainly not the limit of sharpness on a big enlargment) And it's not Pentax fault that Nikon and Canon pro's need these fast wide angle zooms with their APS size digital sensors. So if Pentax ever makes such a lens, it will be because of the current fashion, not because it is a photographic necessity for the average Pentax customer.
